Many people online wondered why Ubisoft changed the name of Gods & Monsters to the more generic sounding, Immortals Fenyx Rising. New documents have revealed that the name change was due to energy drinks firm Monster who filed an opposition to the trademark back in April 2020. Ubisoft seemingly didn’t decide to fully challenge the opposition and decided to roll with Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Opposition to a USPTO filing can essentially win the day because it’s too expensive to fight. The fact that Ubisoft is a publicly-traded company doesn’t change the fact that they don’t want to fight expensive fights, especially when there isn’t a real certainty of winning.

I’ve seen others say the new name is more generic as well. And I just don’t understand how that is so. It went from a title that could be applied to hundreds of games, to one that that has the main characters name in it… I just don’t understand.

I think Ubisoft just pitched an alternative name and liked it.

Honestly, I think it’s the other way around- Gods & Monsters sounds more generic than Immortals Fenyx Rising. It’s still an overall bizarre and, might I add, ludicrous situation.
