Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity demo frame rate and resolution analysis

Take one look at your Nintendo Switch friend list and it’s almost guaranteed you’ll see that most folk have tried out the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity demo that released only a few days ago. If you’ve played it yourself, you may have noticed the frame rate – take a look on socials, you’ll also see that you’re not alone in thinking the action can get a little choppy. And although the demo isn’t necessarily representative of the final product, VG Tech on YouTube has recently uploaded a frame rate test video for the demo. According to their analysis, the demo runs at around 20-30fps. Time will tell if we’ll see a day one patch to improve it.

Here are the details surrounding resolutions for both docked and handheld modes:

  • Docked mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 1440×810 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1013×570. Pixel counts at 1440×810 are common in docked mode. Docked mode renders the UI at 1920×1080.
  • Portable mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 960×540 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 676×380. Pixel counts at 960×540 are common in portable mode. Portable mode renders the UI at 1280×720.
  • Performance in portable mode is similar to docked mode. Docked mode has a longer draw distance and improved LODs compared to portable mode

Can’t they simply add the performance mode like in Fire Emblem Warriors?

    1. No they can’t.. Performance mode in FE Warriors was 720p, here base game is almost that, and the frame rate is about 15-20fps (FE Warriors was 60fps).
The performance more here would run at 240p xD

I don’t think 240p but to be honest I don’t understand why they are pushing to graphics. We saw the trailer in the direct where you control the divine beasts. What is gonna happen when you play in that instance? The game will run 15 fps?

Sometimes I really don’t understand why newer games suffers from problems that are already solved in other games, like Fire Emblem Warriors.

  2. From what i know warrior games generaly look and run bad, so it’s pretty common, but i expected that with the size of the project they would polish the game more,

I suggest to you to check Fire Emblem Warriors.

    2. It was worse in the first Hyrule Warriors with the OG 3DS/2DS, no wonder they skipped it for the Fire Emblem Warriors port and made it just for the New 3DS.

But yeah this company optimization isn’t the best.

  3. I was expecting more in the graphics and frame rate aspect, with the size of the project i tought they would polish the game a lot, still really fun to play, but expected more.

I feel the same thing. I was expecting more from this.

  4. Blurry and low fps, best combo i could ask.

You would think being a Switch exclusive they would take their time to properly optimize it for the platform but i guess not…

    1. when the demo was released really close to the games official release date, along with the ability to transfer ur progress from the demo into the full game? uhhhh im pretty sure this is the representative of the final product. (outside of some day 1 patching tht wont equal res/perf improvements)

    1. Warriors Orochi 4 sometimes goes below 15fps and DW9 is way more demanding. i’m really not looking forward playing DW9 Empires on the Switch.

  5. It’s really not that bad. I was expecting a lot worse based on what everyone’s been saying. The game will likely run smoother at launch or shortly after, but even if it doesn’t I don’t think it would bother me too much.
