As you have most likely seen, Nintendo released their latest financial report today which reveals that the Kyoto-based company has shipped over 68.30 million Nintendo Switch consoles worldwide. The first international video game console which was released by Nintendo was the Nintendo Entertainment System which sold a total of 61.91 million units worldwide. With today’s newly announced figures Nintendo can clearly state that their latest hardware platform has outsold their popular first home console. Here are the other Nintendo consoles through the ages which the Switch has now outsold:
- Wii U (13.56 million)
- GameCube (21.74 million)
- Nintendo 64 (32.93 million)
- SNES (49.10 million)
- NES (61.91 million)
That’s nice, although it isn’t really comparable. The size of the market is much, much, MUCH larger now. In many parts of the world including most of the United States, consoles and console games were not a thing people bought at the time.

I was a kid in the 80’s here in the United States and remember Nintendo being heavily ingrained in pop culture at the time. It seemed like it was everywhere, Super Mario Super Show, Captain N, Mario Cereal, Nintendo Power, Lunch Boxes, Stickers, Posters, Folders at school, all the commercials on TV, Nintendo Comics System, and just about every kid on my block had an NES or was getting one for Xmas. Not to mention Donkey Kong was in every arcade and I even remember playing SMB1 and even Super Punch Out in the arcades as a kid. Maybe it’s just the nostalgia of it all but I remember the NES being a pretty big deal here in the United States in the 80’s.
