Digital Foundry looks at Shin Megami Tensei V

The latest game which the tech-focussed team at Digital Foundry have taken a look at is the recently released Shin Megami Tensei V. While the core game itself has proved to be a hit with reviewers, the game’s performance at times isn’t quite up to par with other Unreal Engine 4 games running on the Nintendo Switch platform. Here’s a summary of the latest Digital Foundry video by Reset Era member, ILikeFeet.

  • lighting and shading is a step above Persona 5
  • baked global illumination
  • no TAA or ambient occlusion
  • camera and per object motion blur, though artifacty due to resolution
  • great bokeh
  • object and shadow cascade draw are extremely apparent
  • NPC animation is half rate at a very close distance
  • menu transitions are choppy
  • dynamic res 1280×720-1536×864 (typically res 792p)
  • handheld 960×540 – 1280×720 (typical 648p)
  • lack of AA makes docked mode look clear
  • handheld looks better
  • targets 30fps, spends most of the time in 27-29
  • feels like it’s targeting a lower framerate
  • possible cpu bottleneck
  • cinematics are in the low to mid 20s, due to Switch’s low bandwidth
  • it’s not a UE4 on switch issue as there are better performing UE4 games on switch

  1. I agree with what they are saying but that doesn’t mean the game isn’t fun cuz it is. They did what they could but at the end of the day it’s a really good game despite it’s flaws.
