Sony has acquired Bungie for $3.6B

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed this evening that it has purchased Bungie for $3.6B. The company will be “an independent subsidiary” of Sony Interactive Entertainment and will remain multiplatform. Bungie is the studio that created Halo before they decided to split from Microsoft and have since been working hard on Destiny 2 which is a free-to-play title available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The move comes after Microsoft announced it had acquired Activision Blizzard who will be part of Xbox Game Studios. That deal cost $70B.

“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family,” said SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan.

“This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience. We understand how vital Bungie’s community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow. Like Bungie, our community is core to PlayStation’s DNA, and our shared passion for the gamer and building the best place to play will now evolve even further.”

  1. I guess Sony is going on the counterattack after everything Microsoft has been doing recently.
I feel as if this is going to become a trend in the gaming industry, next thing you know Nintendo will be buying Sega or something.

    1. “next thing you know Nintendo will be buying Sega or something.” Don’t say that! Can’t Nintendo buy Capcom first? I’m sick of Sega always beating Capcom to the punch when it comes to crossovers. It’s bad enough Sonic is in Brawl and Minecraft and had his own crossover series with Mario. Let Mega Man have his own crossover with Mario for once, WITHOUT Sonic. The only video game that’s a crossover between Nintendo and Capcom and isn’t also a Sega crossover that I can think of is Monster Hunter 4. That’s it.

With that said, it’s good to See Sony being the one acquiring a company for once. Too bad it’s just a developer and has no IPs of their own.

      1. Capcom would be a very good fit, but IP’s that require more powerful hardware like Resident Evil would take a hit, and I’m worried they would try to “sanitize” games like it. SEGA would probably be better if that means they’ll find a way to get them to use those dormant IP’s again, but then there’s Atlus that has the same problem that Resident Evil would.

  2. Nintendo doesn’t need to acquire companies for more IP, Nintendo already has a bunch of recognizable IP. Granted, this particular purchase is of Bungie which only has one IP, a big one though. They could buy some more smaller teams though to help make new games for existing IP. Microsoft only has one Mascot, Sony has a few, Nintendo has so many mascots they have a fighting gave that brings them all together.

    1. Fr, buying a company for one IP when Microsoft has built a decent library through these acquisitions is pretty pathetic. I still think Sony should’ve bought a company like Square Enix.

      1. Microsoft spent a LOOOOOOOOT more money, and are taking a company that’s being gutted of its historical talent. Nobody knows what Acvtivision Blizzard is going to look like after the bloodbath is over.

Sony meanwhile bought a pretty right little dev team that runs a (comparatively) lean operation. They’re taking a lot less risk, both financially and in terms of how difficult the company will be to integrate. Nevermind that they’re playing from the position of strength. They already HAVE dominance in the industry.

If I were picking sides of a Chess board here, I am picking Sony.

        1. MS spent a lot more, yes, but they’re also getting the biggest IP ever. It always lands at 1 every year, and not only that but the amount of IP’s that they’re getting is insane. Sony got… Destiny. A f2p game.

I don’t know why people forget, but MS let Bungie go, and so did Activision. If 2 major publishers let you go, the problem lies within. Why anyone would put faith in a company that 2 other huge companies gave up on, is beyond me. But a Win is a win, right?

          1. “You’re forgetting about Bethesda. Stuff like the Elder Scrolls becoming a Microsoft exclusive is a major blow.”

I didn’t forget anything. There’s little to not evidence that Bethesda is at the moment capable of making a worthy Elder scrolls title. The staff of the Elder Scrolls franchise is long since gone, and recent Bethesda titles have been middling successes at best, not to mention the Fallout 76 disaster. I don’t anticipate ES6 being a success on the level of Skyrim.

“MS spent a lot more, yes, but they’re also getting the biggest IP ever. It always lands at 1 every year, and not only that but the amount of IP’s that they’re getting is insane. Sony got… Destiny. A f2p game.”

By this argument, EA should have a giant library of robust titles. After all, nobody’s bought more IP’s than Ea……..

In reality they sit there and gather dust because the IP wasn’t the valuable thing, the developers who made the games were, and they left in the merger. Activision Blizzard is already ditching all the management in the sale, and they were already bleeding employees. After a Microsoft takeover, the company will be nothing like what it was. The idea that they’ll turn around and make World of Warcraft 2 is a bit of a stretch.

Calling Destiny a F2P game is honestly kind of embarrassing. You know Candy Crush is one of the biggest acquisitions in this Microsoft deal right?

            1. To put into context how much Microsoft spent, the highest selling Call of Duty game made 1.8 billion in revenue. No profit, that’s the total amount of cash that came in from selling the game. In reality, they’re probably looking at about 700 million in profit. substantially less after corporate taxes.

MS spent 68.7 billion on Activision/Blizzard. So if Call of Duty is the horse they’re counting on, they’ll need to make 98 best selling Call of Duty games to make that money back.

            2. “I didn’t forget anything. There’s little to not evidence that Bethesda is at the moment capable of making a worthy Elder scrolls title. The staff of the Elder Scrolls franchise is long since gone, and recent Bethesda titles have been middling successes at best, not to mention the Fallout 76 disaster. I don’t anticipate ES6 being a success on the level of Skyrim.”

Fallout isn’t Elder Scrolls either. Measuring the hypothetical success (or failure) based on the fallout flop is nuts. Even with 76 flopping, Skyrim ports are still selling. The average consumer doesn’t care about fallout, or how it’s even associated to Skyrim. They know Skyrim, and will buy anything associated with the Skyrim name. Even if ES6 doesn’t do Skyrim numbers, saying itll suffer because of 76 is nuts.

“By this argument, EA should have a giant library of robust titles. After all, nobody’s bought more IP’s than Ea……..”

              I’ll just say this.
MS is not EA. EA’s decions do not set a precedent for other companies.

“Calling Destiny a F2P game is honestly kind of embarrassing. You know Candy Crush is one of the biggest acquisitions in this Microsoft deal right?”

But… It is a F2P title. And so is candy Crush, I agree. The only difference between them is that MS paid 70B for Candy Crush and alot MORE. SONY paid for a F2P ip. Of course when that comment was posted we had little know of what exactly Sony paid that amount for.

We now know that the majority of the money was for the actual developement talent and yearly million dollar staying bonuses. Not the IP itself.

      2. I’m glad they didn’t. That would mean no more Bravely Default franchises for Nintendo. It’s bad enough I have to wait years for Pikmin but to fork over $500 to play Bravely Default III?

  3. Just because someone buys a developer doesnt mean all their franchises are going to be worked on. Take Nintendo for example, all they cater to is Mario and Zelda yet have 10s of Ips ain’t did s**t with Starfox, Metroid, Luigi’s Mansion,Toads Treasure Tracker, kid icarus, Ness, Yoshi, Donkey W102, Astral Chain, Donkey Kong Super Strikers, and of Course Pikmin.
Only Nintendo Franchises worked on Immediately is Mario, Zelda and Pokemon while the others rework every 19 years or just use for Super Smash Bros. That’s it.

Activision hasn’t done crap with Crash in years. Microsoft owned Rare for nearly 20 years? Where is Banjo-Threeie where is Conker’s bad Fur Day?

Only game Activison brings is Call of Duty yet they been bought for 70 billion. Why else you thing the last Crash game was called” It’s About Time.” Obviously Activision hasn’t did shit with Crash afterwards.

Ubisoft ain’t did s**t with Rayman franchise since 2012 yet can make an AC immediately.

Sega only cares about Sonic. There is a list of other Sega franchises that haven’t been worked in decades.

    1. It’s already bad enough that it takes 5 to 7 years to develop a game but what’s worse is sit there and dont do nothing for 15 years with that franchise after the game is made.

  4. I hope Atlus already begun work on Shin Megami Tensei VI and dont wait until 2032 to start that game.

Only games that get worked on immediately are
Call of Duty, 3D Mario, Zelda, ACession Creed, Need for Speed, Pokemon, NBA 2K, Let’s Dance, Final Fantasy,.

Yall know Activision is not going to make a new Crash until 2032 right? Microsoft owns Banjo….and? RARE ain’t did s**t with neither bear. Can make a bear game immediately but can make war games immediately.

  5. I’m surprised Ubisoft worked on Mario+Rabbids immediately yet cant work Rayman franchise immediately. Rayman Legends was incredible. I guess I have to wait until 2040 when they announce Rayman Legends.

  6. Meh, call me if Sony ever buys Square Enix, Konami, Sega and/or Capcom. I hope the last two doesn’t happen tbh.

  7. But…. Why? Bungie has a single IP that’s been going downhill. It’s a F2P game now ffs.

It seems like this was just Sony trying to get “even” with MS for that Bethesda get. Lol this just seems pathetic.

    1. But Bungi are master for a gaming services, not for nothing Destiny franchise (one and two titles) it’s in top 5 most played MMO for almost a decade, enter between the big ones like WOW and FFXIV. And thats is what playstation has been looking since a time ago, some study who have that online infrastructure talent and be able to compare with some xbox services.

      1. In terms of competition, there’s not much on the MMO space. Destiny is pretty much on par with FF14, so yes, as of now Destiny is top 5. As a whole last year, it ranked 7th. But I wouldn’t put too much stock in that, since Anthem landed in 25th place, and it’s pretty much dead, like seriously, it takes forever to matchmake. Now landing anywhere in top 5 should be a considerable achievement, but let’s look at who landed at #1 and then see how much it dwarfs everyone below it in terms of Daily Users, active subscribers, and overall users, and it’s not even a competition. I also get the whole Destiny has an established online infrastructure, but so do a lot of other games (Among Us, Roblox for example), and they could’ve gotten those for cheaper if that’s all they were looking for. This really seems like a reactionary get, and I hope it doesn’t bite them in the ass, because like I said, MS and Activision let them go for a reason.

    2. They aren’t buying an IP, they’re buying a company. Sony set up a special fund for retaining employees in the transition.

“It seems like this was just Sony trying to get “even” with MS for that Bethesda get. Lol this just seems pathetic.”

If you think this deal wasn’t in the process for the better part of a year before the Microsoft announcement……. I don’t think you should be calling anyone pathetic.

  8. Instead of buying ownership of these games how about tell these game developers stop waiting 15 years to start a game. That’s the issue. If a console’s life cycle is 5-7years then why are franchise sequels taking longer and longer to begin? Back in Playstation 1, N64 time sequels got started immediately. Now they dont get started until 15 years later.

    SNES received DK 1,2,3 games.
    While Wii Had only Returns
And Wii U had Tropical Freeze
Switch has 0 new DK games but a port.

N64 had Diddy King, Bad Fur Day, Kazooie, Tooie, DK64 by Rare
360 had only Nuts and Bolts

So what’s Rareware doing now? Nothing.

If these dumb developers continued making sequels immediately then a console these days in age can at least get 2 sequels before it goes to another generation console so people dont have to pay $500 to play it.

  9. So while they too busy buying a new developer for a new IP why dont Sony just use the IPs they already have? Do they plan on making a TLOU3? Rachet and Clank 2? Probably ain’t did nothing after Rachet and Clank went on sale last summer.

And if I hear right that Micorosoft wants Activision to make a Monster Hunter Knock off, why not use Rareware? They made plenty of Knock offs. Diddy Kong Racing is a knockoff of Mario Kart. Banjo-Kazooie is a knockoff of Mario 64. Starfox Adventures is a knockoff of Zelda. So while Microsoft is too busy buying new developers they not even doing nothing with the developer they already have.

Hell Microsoft could had made Banjo-Kazooie to Xbox what Mario, Sonic Rayman is to Nintendo Sega and Ubisoft.

And why hasn’t Microsft asked Ubisoft to come.out with a Banjo-Kazooie -Rabbids? Do you what those sales numbers could had been for Xbox?
All these IPs Microsoft.owns and aintndid shit with them.
Had Microsoft let Rareware do there thing, they could had made Xbox number 1 or number 2 in sales.

They want more IPs but wint work with the ones they already own.
