Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director would love to make a Smash Bros movie

Comic Book recently had the chance to chat with the director behind the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, Jeff Fowler, and one of the questions the site put to him was whether he would be interested in creating a Super Smash Bros movie? He replied that he would absolutely love to do that, but he noted that it would require some thorough work with lawyers before it could ever begin production. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to arrive in cinemas in the United States on 8th April and is available to watch here in the UK right now.

“Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing. That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen. Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That’s just classic.”

  1. Smash Brothers could work as a series, with four main characters (say Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu) visiting different worlds and recruiting/inviting other characters to help them defeat some big bad. As a movie, considering how many characters there are, I cannot imagine it not being a big mess.

  2. I really don’t know how will a smash bros movie will work out for a crossover series. It’s going to required a lot of IPs and development team to be involved with a new series like this.

    1. Not only that but they’ll most likely butcher the characters with celebrity voice actors cause of big names, mean if everyone thought the Mario movie cast was weird, I can only imagine how messed up the smash cast would sound like

  3. I imagine it would mean getting lots of top celebs for the roles and would cost an absolute fortune.
You’d need actors like the rock ( well that’s a few mil) and various other top celebs. Would be really cool though.
I can think of plenty of zero suit samus possibilities.

  4. They’ll probably ruin it by adding only the biggest actors and make it live action. If they ever wanted to make a video game movie, then Gantz 0 is a prime example of how it should be done.

  5. Yeah, I like SSB but no way would it be executed well as a movie, even a potential tv series would be bit of a stretch imo.
A promotional anime mini-series is maybe what I would consider a best shot.

  6. Anonymous Skywalker

He is gonna have a Hell of a time getting the licenses for some characters like Sora and Sephiroth cuz Square-Enix is stingy with FF and Disney is stingy with KH.

  7. Good luck getting the rights to every single character, especially Sora.

Not only that, representing around 80 characters in one 2-hour film, plus the weirdness regarding Dr. Mario.

Nintendo are also not the coolest people to negotiate with.

    1. I mean, they don’t need to use every character in the history of the franchise lol.

They could just stick to the original Smash crew from 64, honestly it’d probably be a lot better that way.

  8. A smash brothers movie is definitely possible. Just introduce every franchise in their own unique movie. And just like the avengers, bring on the infinity war.
