Minecraft Legends reviews are in, 74 on Metacritic

the new RTS game, Minecratf Legends

The reviews have started to come in for the new Minecraft spin-off game from Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive, Minecraft Legends, and the results are decidedly mixed. The average review score on online review aggregation site Metacritic is 74 based on 25 critic reviews. Minecraft Legends will be available on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms on Tuesday, 18th April. Here’s a roundup of some of the notable reviews:

“Minecraft Legends is a highly accessible strategy game that won’t challenge fans of the genre. For those who have never quite gelled with it before though, this is a great intro. Online co-op is a fun diversion but it’s the game’s PvP that will offer you the variety needed to keep you coming back for more.”

NME 4/5

“Minecraft Legends battles to blend its open-world adventuring with the intricacies of real-time strategy, a war that sometimes detracts from the overall fun you can have. Even so, its gorgeous environments and clever world-building inspire familiar creativity that makes up for its growing pains. Where other strategy games feature more profound complexity, Minecraft Legends has heart, and it’s hard to resist its charm. Mojang’s first expedition into this genre occasionally holds your hand too tight. But when its grip loosens, there’s a vibrant world of combat challenges to discover, ultimately making it an enticing endeavor.”

Game Informer 7/10

“Minecraft Legends is an engaging strategy game that does a great job streamlining a notoriously complex genre without sacrificing the ever-important element of choice and consequence. That said, some genre staples like assigning custom groups of units are casualties of this simplification, which is too bad because it does limit your strategic options a bit in the heat of battle. But Legends uses other recognizable elements like its worker unit Allays to great effect, and it nails the iconic Minecraft aesthetic with some of the best looking blocks around. The difficulty curve does have the potential to make the late game frustrating, but stellar cooperative and PVP play still make this RTS very worthwhile.”

IGN 7/10

“Minecraft Legends has good ideas, but it’s ultimately held back by the decision to root its strategy action around a central hero. With a limited field of view, few command inputs, and uninteresting AI, Legends fails to generate compelling combat cycles or opportunities for creative thinking.”

  1. Im not really interested in the Pvp gameplay, im more concerned about the co-op aspects and the RTS gameplay mechanics in general. Just the fact that it’s Minecraft will keep me coming back for more, i haven’t played any Minecraft game i didn’t like.

  2. RTS on console has always been less of an experience than on PC. Minecraft style gameplay works in the Minecraft genre. It’s probably hard to make a sequel to/or continue adding content forever to Minecraft so they try different genres to keep the brand going into the future.

“Blocky” is not how I like my games in every genre, so hopefully they find one that works well.

  3. Just like reviews for the Mario movie which sucks btw. I do not go by reviews regardless of critics or users. If you want an honest review just play the game or watch the movie yourself.
Minecraft Legends will probably be a 9 of 10 in my book just like the new Mario game will probably be a 8-10 of 10 even though we have seen nothing of it. The movie though gets a total 2. The only thing they got right was the animation itself except for Peaches head shape which was very off. Everything else was not worth it, wish I would have saved my 10 bucks.
