Sonic Team boss and Shadow the Hedgehog‘s creator, Takashi Iizuka, has revealed in an interview that he’s fed up with people comparing Shadow to Dragon Ball’s dark hero, Vegeta. Speaking to the site Iizuka informed them that Shadow the Hedgehog is his favourite Sonic character due to the “tragic backstory” behind him which makes the controversial character both “interesting and compelling.” The interview then asked Iizuka if Sonic fans have interpreted Shadow in a different way over the years than how he originally expected or intended? Here’s he had to say:
“So yes, there are some ways that people interpret Shadow that are not how the team is intending,” Iizuka begins. I think the biggest one, if you look online, everyone’s like, ‘Oh, this is Dragon Ball Vegeta.'”
“Vegeta really starts out as an enemy and then later becomes a friend and an ally and kind of, like, fights for justice and trying to save the world and whatnot. Shadow is not like that. I never want him to be like that. Shadow is doing his own thing, he’s not friends with Sonic, and he’s gonna go off and, you know, do whatever he feels is correct or right, or what he needs to do. And it’s not like, ‘Well, okay, we used to be enemies, but we’re friends now. Let’s save the world.’ He’s not that kind of character, and [I don’t] want him to be that kind of character.
“So when people are always online saying, ‘Oh, it’s Vegeta, it’s Vegeta,’ it’s like, it’s not Vegeta,” he laughs.
I’m not convinced. Shadow has pretty much moved on from his antihero ways since the late 00s (Boom doesn’t count, different continuity) and is pretty friendly towards Sonic.
Exactly. He is nothing like him. But he is always alone and doesn’t want no friends. Just allies or comrade.
So Rouge and Omega don’t count? Because they where a part of some of Shadow’s best stories after Adventure 2.

Even more funny when you consider anytime sega refers to sonic and friends together shadow is usually involved in some type of way, I always figured their relationship was more like Mario/wario a somewhat one sided friendship

Izuka is one of the four known creators of Shadow, the other three are Kazuyuki Hoshino, Shiro Maekawa, and Yuji Uekawa (he designed Shadow).

Yeah, alongside atleast three other people. Yet lizuka acts like Shadow’s creation was all solely made by him and him alone, I don’t like that.
I mean… I wasn’t really thinking it, but after reading his response, now I am. Everything he’s said just makes Shadow sound more like Vegeta. The more I think about it, the more Sonic and Shadow’s rivalry/one-sided friendship feels just like that of Goku and Vegeta!

And of course he’s not Vegeta. The comparisons are pretty convenient, but shadow’s doesn’t not have Vegeta’s proud boastful “Saiyan this and Saiyan that” personality.
Besides, it’s not like anyone else is the Vegeta in the Sonic universe. Most of us only do Sonic/DBZ comparisons just for fun/genius, and is never meant to be taken literally. Nobody wants the Sonic franchise to turn into modern DBZ (a.k.a. DBS, and all of its problems)
Ive never been the biggest fan of Shadow, for me Knuckles is still the better character.;
This just convinced me more that Shadow is Vegeta and that this guy who was on the team that created Shadow clearly didn’t get what was going on (or is playing dumb). Sonic is Goku right down to Super form. Chaos Emeralds are Dragon Balls. Silver is Trunks. Tails Bulma (the inventor) with a bit of Krillin mixed in. Knuckles is Piccolo. Big The Cat is Yajorobe. Amy is very similar to Chi Chi. Then there’s more obscure stuff like Doctor Gero… is very Eggman. Plus we have beast transformations. It may not all be intentional, but it’s hard not to see it. Especially when Sonic started at a time that DBZ was huge in Japan.
