No upgrade path available for Sonic x Shadow Generations on Switch 2

SEGA has unleashed more details about the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the fun Sonic x Shadow Generations. The company revealed that the game ships with a Game-Key Card and requires a 24GB download. The biggest news revealed is that there is no upgrade path from the Nintendo Switch version of Sonic x Shadow Generations to the Nintendo Switch 2. So if you want the superior version you’ll need to buy the game again. Sonic x Shadow Generations launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 on 5th June.

  • The Nintendo Switch™ version cannot be upgraded to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version. (The same applies to DLC.)
  • Saved data can be transferred from the Nintendo Switch™ version to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version, but not vice versa.
  • Even if you meet the required storage space listed below, a download of up to 24 GB is needed to play the digital edition.

    1. Let* but yeah seems lame. I’m one of the fools who bought the miserable switch 1 version. Full price 🤦🏾‍♂️

    1. Sega has been in bed with Denuvo for ages so of course they would adopt the horrible key card concept and on top of it lock you out of an upgrade if you have the original version, truly doing what Nintendon’t

  1. And people say that nintendo is anti consumer…but you gotta sell the lie of being the “highest selling franchise”.

At least they should patch that garbage sonic frontiers game for free.

      1. Nintendo provides third party companies key cards as options for how much they (the third parties) want to spend on distribution of their physical games for customers. For some games this is practical as the games are too big to fit on the less expensive, smaller gigabyte cartridges, however, some companies (like Square Enix) are putting their smaller games on game key cards purely to maximize their profits. Reminder that Cyberpunk 2077 was optimized to fit on a real Switch 2 cartridge rather than the devs cheaping out and using a game key card.

To put it simply, Nintendo provided options for third party companies to ensure they can have their games on the Nintendo Switch 2, and some companies are taking advantage of that as well as the consumer.
