Today’s Switch update allows system transfer to dedicated server in case you sell Switch

Nintendo released a meaty new firmware update today bringing new features and improvements. One of the things which has gone under the radar is the ability to now upload your system data to the cloud to transfer over to the Nintendo Switch 2 if you sell your console before you get the new one. It should be noted that if you upload your system data to the dedicated server to download to another console the original system will be factory reset.

“For users that will lose access to their Nintendo Switch before receiving their Nintendo Switch 2, there is an option to upload system transfer data to a dedicated server which can then be retrieved on their Nintendo Switch 2. After you upload your system transfer data to the dedicated server, the Nintendo Switch system will be initialized to factory settings, so only perform this transfer if you’ll be able to complete the transfer on Nintendo Switch 2.”

  1. This is very interesting, probably won’t be using it but you never know, what I won’t do is sell my console.

  2. Same thing… There are still a few games that will not be compatible with Switch 2, not to mention the famous “Switch 2 Edition” of which I am waiting for confirmations on the obligation or not

      1. I still don’t know if the “switch 2 edition” updates are mandatory to play or not because I can’t see myself paying 10€ for zelda since its “switch 2” update doesn’t interest me…

One person told me that it’s like Sony which offers for PS4 games on PS5 to play them as is or for money to have an update to benefit from the features of the ps5.

        But Sony is not Nintendo

        1. You can still play Switch 1 games on Switch 2. Paying for the Switch 2 Edition upgrades for said games is completely optional. Just think about it like buying DLC- you can still play the base game without having to purchase the extra features.

        2. Switch 2 Edition updates are not mandatory. You don’t need to buy them to play the Switch version on Switch 2. They’re only if you want an enhanced version. Breath of the Wild, for example, WILL play on Switch 2. You don’t need to buy the Switch 2 Edition update. It’s just an option for those that want an enhanced version.

        3. Hi, I was one of the people who talked to you about backwards compatibility on the other post. Some days ago I talked with Nintendo’s Customer Service and the support agent confirmed that upgrades are not mandatory and you can play Nintendo Switch 1 games on the Nintendo Switch 2 without having to purchase the Switch 2 Editions. The agent also talked about other details. I took screenshots of the chat and you can see them here: https://imgur.com/a/chat-with-customer-service-rNIhJQe

    1. Those very few games that are not compatible with Switch 2 are mostly about physically using the original Switch, like Labo, where you wouldn’t be able to physically fit a larger Switch 2 into slots made for the OG Switch. I think that’s it really. So it’s not like it’s incompatible because of some system or other convoluted restrain, it’s just that they deliberately made it incompatible, because it wouldn’t make sense to be compatible.

  3. @Benoit You’re not the only one to say this, but I haven’t seen any official statements, can you tell me where you saw that? Thank you for your answer

As for the incompatibility of the games, I read that Nintendo, basically, does a so-called hardware compatibility, the wii you and the 3Ds contained the wii and Ds chips but the switch 2 does not contain any switch 1 components so the compatibility will be at the software level but some games will cause problems. we have for example, Doom Eternal but it is totally incompatible with the switch 2 and no one knows if Bethesda will do anything. unlike Epic Game who are remaking a version of Fortnite on Switch 2 (the switch 1 version is incompatible with switch 2)

    1. I replied to you above with a confirmation from Nintendo customer service that Switch 1 games are playable on the Switch 2 without the need to buy the Switch 2 Edition, as they are optional. I also sent the screenshots of the chat.

    1. I assume it’s exactly like the transfer method from Wii to Wii U, so pretty much everything will be carried.
