  1. What I have come to realize regarding Nintendo over the years, is that they will always do what they want to do and what they ‘think’ is best for them and the consumer.

Even if everyone in the fanbase is screaming and shouting for a particular product or change or to include something, Nintendo doesn’t listen. They will do exactly what they want to do. Nothing more and nothing less.

It has become apparent how stubborn they are as I’ve branched out to other systems and started supporting other companies. Other game developers will take gamer feedback and apply that to their products. They will make changes that the community wants and implement ways in which players can give timely feedback on their products in the first place.

Nintendo never does this. The entire fanbase could be shouting for something that needs to be changed about a game and Nintendo will literally pay no attention. It is something I’ve grown to dislike about Nintendo.

While, I do think it plays into a larger strategy which is to not feed into player demand, because then players will do it more and more and will expect it and it could make it so Nintendo needs to give into demand more in the future, but… that is a very anti-consumer approach. Nintendo has really been showing their true colors, for me at least, as of late. 😢

I think the one glaring exception to this is Sakurai. He is largely left to his own devices at Bintendo as he is a senior developer and trusted to the fullest degree. He will put out fan servers and ask for feedback and make changes. (Maybe not about Smash Bros story modes, but at least on character inclusions…)

I think Nintendo needs to step away from the idea that they know best over the consumer… Because that is what it feels like with their products!

    1. I actually think it’s a nuanced position. I think with the ability to provide feedback so easily and quickly we see a lot of devs too keen to listen to vocal users, ending up with games that are excessively homogenised and often obsessed with competitive play and balance which can take you away from interesting ideas that would be great if only they were given the chance.

However, I think Nintendo are significantly too far in the other direction. When people are having fun with their games in a way that Nintendo doesn’t approve of, Nintendo will do their best to stifle and ruin that fun. That’s such a bad strategy, why would you try and take people’s enjoyment away.

    2. A very simplistic analysis.. Nintendo listens to players but we also need to state things as they are: some complain for nothing or have prejudices… Two facts: 20 years ago, some were outraged by Wind Waker, they demanded at all costs a ‘realistic Zelda’ and Miyamoto kept repeating: ‘wait to play it before judging.’ Another fact, there is a strong demand for a new F-Zero yet the series has never sold well and afterwards, Miyamoto repeated many times that he had already poured everything into the last game! Add to that a version worthy of the Super Nintendo has been released and companies like Shinen produce similar games, so why would Nintendo take the risk? And to say that Nintendo does not listen to players is false… I don’t know if it’s related, but the GameCube in the NSO has been requested for a long time… and there are other examples.

    3. Let’s see…horrible controls in kid icarus uprising, tripping in ssb brawl among other issues in that game, mediocre online connection, paying for amiibos and dlc, blamming players who “don’t understand his vision”, refusing to listen to players feedback about how to improve the single player mode (story mode) and online, from my point of viee the amiibo and dlc part is anti consumer the most but people enjoy clapping at everything sakurai does…

  2. Ninty overreacted to the gaming of the random option. Then a lot of people (while admitting they mostly only play knockout tour) overreacted to people who had a valid criticism about the un-fun change

    1. Gamers overreacted to Nintendo fixing the broken Random option that wasn’t actually Random. It’s a good thing though that Ninty increased the frequency of lap tracks in response to player feedback.

I personally enjoy the way you drive to a different track to begin the lap race but totally understand why players still want the option for traditional 3 lap races.

      1. Ninty is lucky people give a hoot to react to their bad decisions before they leave game and go somewhere else (which did happen). So disagree that the reaction and negative reviews were excessive. They pinpointed out of touch management of online

  3. Well, knowing how stubborn Nintendo can be, I’m at least glad they’ve listened (somewhat) this time to the criticism. Listening to your audience is key. That’s where so many other publishers are falling short. Don’t try to tell your customers what they want. Give them what they’re actually asking for.

  5. Also—and this is just my opinion—maybe having a different experience with this game is actually for the better. Instead of trying to surpass MK8 (how do you even top that?), offering a kind of side-upgrade feels like the right move. Kind of like how Forza and Forza Horizon deliver different but complementary experiences.

    1. People also seem to forget EVERY title they release is different from the previous one for experimenting purposes. This isn’t Nintendo being stubborn, it’s them doing what they’ve always done. If you don’t like it you’re probably not a Nintendo fan. Not every game needs to cater to YOU, and the entitlement that other companies like Microsoft with anti-consumer-pass have cultivated is sickening.

      1. I have bought over two thousand Nintendo games in my life but I guess if I dislike one or have and voice Valid Criticism that I’m not a fan

        1. The online consumer culture around the Nintendo brand is out of control. Valid criticism is read as treachery by a lot of these people

          1. Are you kidding me? The “online culture” right now is people spamming videos with doom and gloom over the dumbest things. If anything it’s the opposite.

            1. It’s both. Not every criticism is doom and gloom just like how not every fan expressing their enjoyment is a bootlicker. It’s when you try to tear the other person’s opinion down instead of having a genuine discussion when it becomes a problem.

        2. How about an icon or color next to each character telling us what weight class they are. I want to be to compare 2 vehicle’s stats side by side so I can better decide what kart I want.

  6. I think Nintendo straight up lied about that in the patch notes. It seems to be pretty much exactly the same to me, and a lot of people are saying the same thing.
