Brandon Sanderson looking to adapt Mistborn into a video game

Popular fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson has revealed in his end of year message that he’s close to adapting his exhilarating Mistborn novels into a video game. He said that he’s currently talking to AAA video game developers about the interest in adapting the books into a video game series and says if anyone is interested in this proposal then to contact his representatives to get the ball rolling.

“I’ve started to get some real interest on the video game front, and I feel I’m finally getting established enough that we can make a Mistborn game happen.”

“To that end, I’ve started talking to some AAA developers. This is at Step One only, but it’s an encouraging one. These rights were tied up with the film rights for the last… oh, six~seven years, so I didn’t get to test the market on them until recently.“

I’m trying to do things differently this time in an effort to retain control of my video game rights. I already have interest from some major players in the Video Game industry (who I like a lot). So if you are a decision maker at a AAA studio, or a major independent, and you’ve always wanted to make a Mistborn or Stormlight game… well, you would want to contact my reps now.

  1. Hm. I’m sure there’s a plan and some ideas here, but this approach doesn’t sound like a good game in the making. You can have JRR Tolkien material and still not come out with a game worth playing. You don’t need to find a big studio, you find one person who understands game design, and you prototype a very basic thing that’s got tactile fun. Might take a while, couple years. Then you take a game to a game studio

  2. Let an indie studio do it, don’t go with any big companies right now they are not locked in enough. I would talk to the studio that did expedition 33 or the team that did Sea of Stars (if you want the non 3D route like the castlevania games)

  3. There’s always From Software and they don’t have to go the Soulsborne/Soulslike route. Monolith Soft is a good choice as well, otherwise indie studios are the better choices.

  4. There’s a reason why this guy isn’t talking to indie devs guys. he wants a big budget. I’m all for supporting in the studios, but Mistborn is a huge saga. I’m sure he wants it to be in full 3D with large set pieces. and my best guess is he’s going for third person in action.

as good as some modern indie devs are, with this guy wants will take more money than they have access to. I’m not saying a lot of money is the only or right way to go. I’m just saying that for the ideas this guy has, that’s not what he’s looking for.

I respect him wanting to fulfill his Creative idea though. Hope it turns out well. He has a good track record.
