Metaphor ReFantazio Director Katsura Hashino recently participated in an interview with Game Informer during which Hashino admitted that Atlus needs to keep pushing the JRPG formula in an effort for it to evolve. He also said that the genre needs to become more accessible for a wider audience to enjoy while fully retaining the charm that makes JRPGs such a beloved genre of video games.
“More so than just latching onto a specific genre of game, we’re going back to how we can evolve our JRPG and what it looks like. For us, it’s coming to a turning point where we want to really take it to the next level in terms of how our JRPGs are. Of course, we want to retain our strengths, whether that be our narrative or elements that make us JRPGs.”
“With these changing times, we do feel the need to update our format and create games that would be more widely playable, not just within the JRPG realm, but something that would be easier, more accessible for a wider audience. We’re hoping to update our format with that in mind.”
Expanding to a broader audience is fine but I feel like we should be gatekeeping these types of games from tourists and the non-existent modern audience.
Too late most the old Atlus is gone now. NetEase could hire them like they did Nagoshi and the BlazBlue creator. Honestly Sega has gone down the toilet and most if not all big Japanese publishers their staff don’t like the change then get offered big deals to start new studios Nagoshi with NetEase, Mori with NetEase, Itsuno with Tencent, Tabata I heard got a Saudi deal, Suda with NetEase now, that’s the way things are going now. Wouldn’t doubt is Mikami’s new studio gets invested or bought by China or Saudi same with Kamiya’s new studio or Platinum which is partially owned by Tencent.

This game I heard was woke and did really well so they will double down on it. Yakuza 0 ruined the story ruined Majima and made Kiryu look stupid essentially saying he got had by the Tojo in the 80’s then again in the 90’s. Then 6 retreaded the first game having Kiryu go to jail for a while only to get out and the world change. Then stupidly fake his death. Majima origin ruined they decided to say he just pretends to be crazy and had him cross dress also changed his line from the first game in Kiwami 1 where he is introduced from dark to wacky character. Nagoshi new game needs to fix it. In terms of Atlus yeah Catherine Full Body was my first check out that was woke.
Majima had a wife they just erase that plot line and randomly brought in blind woman in 0 and Kiwami 2. His turn into insanity was supposed to be built by being tortured and losing his eye then leaving the yakuza to get married in secret to an idol and his wife aborting their child without him knowing causing him more distress and dealing with sone form of guilt for not being able to save Taiga leading to him going insane the plot was there and dropped. Also he was never super strict even when he had 2 eyes he was kind of himself just not full crazy yet.
No there is no broad audience. Honestly Atlus games have their audience like with anime once you go broad you lose that. Honestly could bring in tourists or completely fail losing the existing audience.

Yup Studio Pierrot took forever with Bleach TYBW 52-53 episodes should not take that long then lied about Boruto coming back and worth anniversary episodes never released and now they’re bringing Black Clover back but given that series has 2 more arcs it would take forever to adapt with their release schedule I mean look how bad it is went 2 years without a Bleach episode the only anime they produce. Lied about reveals at a convention too. Toei even got in on it One Piece taking forever and now anime hiatuses too then milking Dragon Ball ruining it even after Toriyama’s death.
Yup modern anime is not good. Dan Da Dan confuses me they do risqué things but are trying to be western kind of like Kill La Kill and there really isn’t anything. The long waits between episodes hurt too and CGI animation as well or just “western” appropriation in anime. We can’t even get good anniversary seasons.

Sounds terrible honestly a lot of old Atlus guys have left so this was bound to happen. Heard Metaphor is that “modern: game. Pass on future Atlus titles for me and honestly Sega goo Like A Dragon was not good during PS4 I liked the change to Ichiban but the series ruined Kiryu and Majima and with Nagoshi gone it’s clear it’s going to get worse don’t even think he had heavy hand in making the PS4 games onward and took most the staff from the old games with him. Gang Of Dragon has me hype. In other news Sony patented AI that will play games for you…… I personally think that’s dumb but all you anti AI people better avoid supporting Sony now.
