“Hell Is Us is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood, Drug Reference, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Violence. This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a deserter on a mission to find his parents amid a civil war. From a third-person perspective, players explore a war-torn open-world environment, interact with soldiers, help survivors, and engage in combat against supernatural humanoid creatures. Players use swords and axes to slash at enemies in frenetic melee-style combat. Some finisher attacks are highlighted by close-up angles of players impaling enemy creatures. A handful of memory sequences depict ghostly figures of civilians executed by soldiers. As players progress, they can encounter hanging corpses, mass graves, and corpses amid large pools of blood. The game contains some references to suggestive/sexual material in the dialogue (e.g., “Killing and raping their…neighbors”; “I’ve been looking forward to a good time with the famous…ladies later”; “I guess the soldiers are just passing through. They begin to blur together after a while…You just closed your eyes and wait ’till it’s over…”). References to drugs appear in the dialogue and/or text (e.g., “I’m coming back down from my high”; “I went back to bed and shot up again”; “A young man high on drugs.”).
