Nintendo Wii: Miyamoto Says Video Games Need Controllers

projectnatal2

Shigeru Miyamoto still remains unconvinced by Microsoft’s attempt to woo gamers with a motion sensing camera.

Whilst Microsoft’s Project Natal does away with controllers completely, Shigeru Miyamoto believes video games need the feedback and precision of a control pad to feel like your truly interacting with your console.

As someone who thinks of things from the perspective of creating interactive experiences, I really think that you do need something (to hold in your hand). I don’t think as a creator that I could create an experience that truly feels interactive if you don’t have something to hold in your hand, if you don’t have something like force feedback that you can feel from the controller. That’s why I think the Wii remote, particularly with Wii MotionPlus, makes for such a strong experience.

Nintendo: Future Nintendo Titles Can Play Themselves

newsupermariobroswii

If gamers manage to find themselves stuck on future Nintendo games then all they’ll need to do is pause the game and the game will automatically complete the level for them.

In a recent interview Shigeru Miyamoto tried to explain the rationale behind such a radical idea. The explanation that he presented was that younger and less experienced players will be able to get past any difficultly barriers the game may present, meaning that players will no longer need to resort to cheat codes or walkthroughs.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they’re ready” confirmed Miyamoto, through his translator. “And yes, we’re looking into this for future games, too.

Nintendo Wii: Miyamoto Speaks About Both Zelda And Mario Wii

supermariogalaxy2

Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken unreservedly to Wired Magazine about his ideas and enthusiasms for two of Nintendo’s biggest franchises for the Nintendo Wii.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

  • Originally tried having Mario and Luigi both on screen in Mario 64, experimented with different camera techniques. The resolution of visuals on the Wii is strong enough so that details can be viewed if the camera is pulled far back.
  • The main reason for creating a sequel was that the team hadn’t run out of ideas whilst developing the original game.
  • One of the biggest ideas is “China Syndrome”, where you drill a hole straight through the earth and end up somewhere on the other side of the planet. The team felt that this mechanic could make the “game a lot of fun”.
  • Yoshi was added as a means of grabbing/onto objects and as a way for Mario to carry things around.
  • Miyamoto would like to go for a little story as possible – he felt that Mario titles aren’t suited to a story. He feels backstories and character development might “weigh down the bright and fun feel” of a game.
  • Galaxy’s director Yoshiaki Koizumi hope to bring more story elements in, but with a little (unfortunate) persuasion from Miyamoto he’s agreed that there doesn’t need to be as deep a story.
  • However, the person carved out of a tree stump (in the trailer) has a little story.

Zelda Wii

  • Feels the industry has gotten into a habit of announcing/showing games too early.
  • Felt Metroid announcement was more important game to show at E3, given Nintendo feels the event is where products to be released in the next 12-months or so would be discussed.
  • The team have been focusing on gameplay/control elements, as opposed to visuals/story – and didn’t want to waste efforts creating a trailer for E3 too soon.
  • The current goal is to make MotionPlus a requirement to play the new Zelda.

Nintendo Wii: Nintendo Finds Microsoft’s Project Natal “Ironic”

projectnatal

Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils Aime finds Microsoft’s Project Natal motion sensing camera rather “ironic“.

Whilst both Microsoft and Sony are busy claiming that they’re the future of video gaming with their motion sensing peripherals, Reggie Fils Aime stresses that the future is already here via the Nintendo Wii.

Our first reaction is that it is ironic that, three or four years ago, the prevailing industry opinion was that prettier pictures or more horsepower were the waves of the future.

And now it’s clear from both of our competitors that physical activity in gaming is the wave of the future. It’s also ironic that, for Nintendo, the future is here. The future is now.

Nintendo Wii: Nintendo Chose Not To Use Camera Motion Sensing Device

wiimotionplus

Satoru Iwata firmly believes that the Wii’s accelerometers work better than the new technology that drives both Microsofts and Sony’s new motion sensing technology.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Satoru Iwata explained that Nintendo had experimented with motion sensing cameras but the technology was ultimately rejected primarily because the Wii’s current accelerometer-based technology worked better.

Until they say when they’re releasing it, how much it costs, and what software it comes with, we won’t know whether that is the route we should have taken, however…I think they couldn’t choose to release exactly the same thing. Companies whose people said that motion sensing wouldn’t work are now proposing motion sensors.
