EDGE Says Super Mario 3D World Uses “Asset And Idea Recycling”, Possibly Originally For 3DS

super_mario_3d_world_run

Established gaming publication EDGE has managed to get some all important hands on time with Nintendo’s latest 3D Mario title, Super Mario 3D World for Wii U. The publication claims that the game is so similar to Super Mario 3D Land on the Nintendo 3DS that they believe that the game was originally developed for the Nintendo 3DS and quickly ported over to the Wii U. Here’s an excerpt of their interesting preview for Super Mario 3D World.

“By name alone, one can surmise that Super Mario 3D World is a sequel to the 3DS’s 3D Land. It’s so similar, in fact, that it arouses suspicions that it was once a 3DS sequel, quickly diverted for release on Wii U with the understanding that Nintendo’s flagging console needed a Mario game, and quickly. We saw plenty of examples of asset and idea recycling from its 3DS predecessor, including the exclamation mark boxes that teleport the player between stage sections, during our time with the game.”

“Like its Nintendo Direct roster, Super Mario 3D World is Nintendo duly giving its fans what it wants, but, on first impressions, it’s lacking the bold platform-defining invention once injected into each and every new Super Mario game.”

    1. Doesn’t matter if EDGE is Nintendo hater or not, if they are telling the truth then why would you reject that? I don’t see any hatred in their statement, in fact if you read the statement carefully, they are actually complementing the past new Super Mario games and this new coming game.

      1. isnt obvious that this game was in developement before the 3ds version was and that the 3ds version being easier to produce reached the market before the wii u version was polished enough to be released as a launch title.

        1. I don’t belive this. I think with the recent releases (NSMBU, 3D World) Nintendo only spends 1 year in development of the mario games. It’s sad to see Mario falling so far now that even the 3D Titles are rehash but I can understand them from a business point: The NSMB Series sells like hot waffles so the want to use the same formula – just in 3D.

The last NOT-DEAD franchise Nintendo has would be Zelda, hope the don’t fuck that one up. And of course SSB. Guess I’ll stick with 3DS for now, at least that one has all the good games.

      2. All it seems like is a best guess. Yes, sequel, yes ideas might be reused, no not using the assets. I knew someone who worked a game design studio. Its literally impossible to upsize resolution on textures. And it would be best to build two separate assets, which I know from being a visual designer myself. This is more than likely built from the ground up as far as graphics go. The most they might have done is revamp another Wii U engine to speed up process.

I saw it along with Mario Kart, and Wind waker in person. All of them look better than in the videos.

        1. Exactly. Them saying its essentially a 3ds port of sorts is ridiculous. That would be painfully obvious if it were true, like MH3U.

      3. it does matter, because they act as if asset recycling was something new or shameful. neither is the case, its most common with *ANY* sequel to *EVERY* franchise. why would they make everything from scratch when they already have those assets?

and the speculation that it was ment to be on 3ds just because it shares assets is bullshit, those assets aren’t in any way related to a platform, a 3d modell is a 3d modell..

    2. Long time Nintendo fan here, today still, but I kinda agree with them.
Sure; the game looks great, but does it look like it deserves to be named in the same sentence as 64, Sunshine and Galaxy (yes, I understand the irony in me doing that exact thing right now)? Personally I think not, and although it will almost definitely will be a very fun game, it’s a tad disappointing nonetheless.

In fact: I REALLY hope the actually are right, assuming that would positively influence our chances of getting a real 3D Mario on Wii U. If EDGE are wrong (which I honestly don’t think so), then that would probably mean that Super Mario 3D World IS the Wii U’s flagship 3D Mario game.

    3. no that’s besides the point, any one with a brain cell can see that this is just a rehashed recycled version of the 3ds game, i am tired of defending Nintendo and their laziness, first we get new super mario bros u, which was proven to be a asset re-used, rehash, recycled game, just in higher resolution, now when we are expecting Nintendo to blow our socks off, with a true 3d revolutionary hd mario, instead we get this, and whats worse is after hyping up the fans about how retro is working on a epic game which will wow us, instead we get a asset recycled rehash of donkey kong country returns, WTF??? even though i know all of the above games will be great games its not the point, wii u so badly needs a game pad proof of concept game, and 6 months after spending over £350 at launch i am struggling with defending Nintendo and their retarded lazy ass decisions!

most of the kick ass games from the e3 are going to be released in 2014, so what the hell do we have for this year? pikmin is not main stream enough, and so when you think about it Nintendo has given us core gamers jack shit since the launch, hell they aint even bothered with promoting and advertising, its like they have given up!

Retro has some of the best art teams and developers in the world, they have devs from naughty dog, vigil, bioware, crytek, and many more, and Nintendo has them working on a 2d donkey kong game? r u kidding me? here we are expecting Nintendo to drop bombs, and all we get is like a slap in the face, especially for fans like me, who bought wii u day 1 at launch even though i own and game on all platforms, and even though their was no game at all which i wanted to play at launch on wii u,its the fault of the nintendrones, who don’t demand more, and bark like a rabid dog whenever has a opinion which criticizes Nintendo! just what have they been doing since 2011? (skyward swords launch) a whole lot of miiverse, a worthless feature without any games to talk about! i have had it with defending Nintendo, they can get screwed! lazy, money grabbing whores, recycling 2d games in 2013 to milk the loyal fans! cant wait till my PS4 arrives! my wii u can carry on gathering dust, or if a soft mod hack comes out before then, i will just do it, and pirate the greedy bastards, since they deserve it at this point!!

      1. I agree with you 100%. I also been gaming on Nintendo consoles for years but I also feel they out of touch. I loved Nintendo back in the day when they had Rare (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker), Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness), Left Field (Excitebike64). They had a special relationship with Factor 5(the Rogue Squadron games were awesome). These awesome 2nd party developers would make other type of games that appealed to the ones of us who aren’t necessarily interested in all the Mario and whatnot games. And when you criticize Nintendo you are attacked by a bunch of rabid dogs. I been gaming on Nintendo consoles for years, I used to like Nintendo a lot. I also are getting a PS4 to fill in all that void of games that appeal to me that I can’t get on Nintendo consoles.

        1. watchThat
thanks dude, its nice to hear from a fellow gamer, who is also a Nintendo fan, and like me is also tired and fed up with Nintendo’s constant bullshit! i too have been gaming a long time, over 30yrs to be exact, i was there when it all started, through the crash, and then its revival by the old Nintendo,to the present day.
i too miss the old Nintendo, from the nes, snes, N64 and gamecube days, they have lost touch, and have near enough abandoned the core fan base like us who have supported and loved them for so long, shame, i hope one day they will get new management and sort their shit out! Peace out dude and keep gaming!!!

        1. Never did I imply that it won’t have anything new, just that it doesn’t by any means meet my (and many fellow Nintendo/Mario fans with me) expectations.

      2. So, in short: what I said before in fact WAS the point, and you agree with me. You could’ve done that as a TL;DR, but ‘kay.

Also: you state that what I said was besides the point, after which ”watchThat” says that he agrees with me 100%, and you share the same opinion as him?

This shit doesn’t add up somehow…

At one point I even doubted you read my comment in the first place, since what I said about Nintendo was the exact opposite of defending them…
        __________________

I wrote this because it’s odd to find you not agreeing with me – while your comment plus explanation is exactly the way I think about it as well. I share your opinion, therefore you probably share mine.

      1. That’s right, and the difference between the Galaxy and this sequel is that it’s up to 4 players…

It might not be the most original Mario game to date but it will certainly be one of the most fun to play!

        1. Yes I totally agree, I am exited to go to Bestbuy with my bro. to try this and Mario Kart 8 out. Sure they may not have creative names but nobody says anything about “Call of Duty : Fishes and Dog’s, I mean “Ghost” or the continous Modern warfares, or Black Ops.

        2. Without ONLINE its a wasted Mario game. This is the 1st 3D Mario game I WONT be getting since Sunshine.

      1. It depends on what people define as “Next-Gen”…

So far we have only seen a relatively short trailer about the gameplay, but we still have to see how it plays out with the Wii U Gamepad…

Is there a 5th player? Is it possible that the Gamepad user can Control the bosses themselves?…

Which IMO would be the most fun feature ever…

    1. They have a point, though. Chances are, it is a lot like it’s predecessor. Still, even if it were an exact port, it’d be a whole new experience playing it on a console, in HD, with tighter controls, more functions, etc. While what Edge has said is duly noted, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.

  1. Infinite_Rubix_Cube

Hopefullfy this will mean that we may get the announcement of the console’s true 3D Mario game maybe sometime in the next year or two.

  2. Sounds about right.

While I will no doubt purchase this, and I’m sure it’s fun, with rumors of a 3D Mario being announced, the hope would have been for something more akin to Galaxy, Sunshine, or 64. This seems like an idea rushed to get more titles on the system, and I’m sure in 2 years, we’ll have a more appealing/interesting/innovative 3D Mario.

    1. They’ve still got time before the game releases, I’m sure they’ll develop it to have more of an adventure aspect like in the past 3D Mario games

    1. That’s different. They are only on one platform, whereas Super Mario 3D Land and World are on different platforms, one of them on a lesser-powered one.

  3. I think Nintendo put a lot of resources into the 3DS when that was struggling, and was able to turn it around. But by doing so, they sacrificed quality games in a Launch window and first 18 months of the consoles life.

The system is about a year old, and as it stands, there is ONE worthwhile game on there: New Super Mario Bros, and while that is a great and fun game, it is not worth purchasing a console for.

  4. “We saw plenty of examples of asset and idea recycling from its 3DS predecessor, including the exclamation mark boxes that teleport the player between stage sections, during our time with the game”

Well, with that sort of logic, the Goomba’s are recycled assets, the green pipes are recycled assets. The question mark boxes are recycled assets.

News flash: Mario game features elements known to be from Mario franchise! Well fuck me!

  5. Oh, Nintendo…..Instead of dropping big surprising bombs and new partnership games and throwing money at third parties, you only showed the games we were all expecting and they are still miles away….Now everyone is worrying again! Whats so difficult about getting third parties on board speed up game development and advertise the system from the start? Dont get me wrong, their games looked fucking gorgeous, but I’m afraid they will lose this gen…..and many fans……

    1. You sound like a butthurt metroid fan. What, DKC is too casual for you? Fuck you, the DK fandom has been wanting another game for years.

      1. Dont be pissed, but DKCR, DKCR3D and DKCTF just are too many 2d-sidescrolling DK games in such a short time. I love how TF looks , but that just wasnt something surprising (well it was surprising, but nothing really new). I dont care that there was no Metroid, its time will come, but I would really have loved something totally unexpected, like Wave Race U, Megaman U, Redsteel 3, some other remakes/sequels to long forgotten franchises or F-zero, additionally to the stuff they showed.

        1. Im a drone i love GRAPHICS. I troll mynintendonews because im a Virgin and live with my mom i dont even play games im too busy here

    1. If each level has to be accessed through a menu, I don’t think this will be the only 3d mario we will get. Every 3d mario since 64 was an “open world”/main hub level exploration. I feel like that just got this from the 3ds, changed a few levels, added a few characters and stuff and upressed the game to fill in this draught of games. The 3d Mario’s were always “big budget” as far as Mario games go, this is hardly that.

  6. Haha, EDGE is so dull, journalism at its worst! I could go in detail why everything they are saying here is total crap, but I won’t. The fact that they honestly assume Nintendo had no Mario game ready or in plan for Wii U, and SUDDENLY noticed “oh gamers want a Mario game, how surprising, we had no idea, we must hurry, let’s port Super Mario 3D Land 2 to Wii U” is hilarious enough.

Let me say it in Luigi’s words: “EDGE you look-a ridiculous”.

  7. I think the game overall looks great and fresh, It will have the 3D Land felling (which is pretty great), and they have time to put a lot of new stuff on the game, so yeah, It’s gonna be awesome :)

  8. Yesterday I was bitching around but now that I’ve cooled down, I eant to apologize. The new Mario looks amazing, full of great ideas.

Thing with Nintendo: they’re artists, not mercenaries, and that’s the reason I’ll ever stick with them. Comparing Nintendo to Sony and Microsoft is like comparing jazz with Justin Bieber

    1. Nintendo is smart theyre releasing these specific games because they sell systems they did it for the wii and 3ds theyre hoping donkey kong/mario3dw/mariokart will give the same effect

      1. Then why didn’t they? The did the same thing as 3dland and added multiplayer from nsmb. They just wanted to get something out fast. Hopefully Wii u picks up and Nintendo then have time to make their real games. Nintendo’s Wii u is in trouble.

  9. Fine by me, the game looks phenomenal, as was 3D world. It didn’t do anything overtly new either yet I found it to be a top 5 Mario.

    1. Derp derp hery derpy SHUT THE FUCK UP. I like to have sexual intercourse with grilled cheese sandwiches, so warm and gooey! YUMMY! Time to hug a goat.

    2. Don’t even remind me about dkr lol they have all this power to make use of the console and what do they do ? Make the same game again with added camera angles as if that’s going to make it better. There’s a lack of imagination coming off of Nintendo for its core franchises which is really sad. You have retro working on whats essentially the same dk game all over again instead of a new ip or at least something different. Very disappointed with The Nintendo direct hopefully they can come with something that will truly amaze us.

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I was impressed with MK, Bayonetta, X, and Super Smash, but DK and THIS made me reconsider how necessary Retro is. They said they personally chose between DK and Metroid. I know they made three Metroid games already, but a lot of the developers left and they had JUST made DKCReturns and are NOW releasing a 3D port of it. And you’re absolutely right: we need to see the console pushed to the limit.

I know there’s X and Mario Kart and Bayonetta and Super Smash, but I want MORE games that convinces everyone that this console is a great investment.

        1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Whoops. This game didn’t make me reconsider how necessary Retro was, but DK did. This game just disappointed me and pushed me further away from buying a Mario game.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

And most likely IS a rehash.
I was so disappointed by this. I hated 3D Land. The environments were unimaginative but at least it was just a 3DS game (by that I mean not a console game and only $40). There’s no excuse for this crap.

  10. Umm the same can be said for Majoras mask.

Who cares if they recycle ideas or concepts. The whole point of gaming is to have fun, unwind, and relax. I will always buy from Nintendo because that is what they do best, they allow me to have fun with a game and not be super stressed into buying season passes and day one DLC.

Whatever, the press will always report their ideas or theories, but to someone like me (an all around gamer) this BS doesn’t matter.

Nintendo is vilified now but come time for smash, the industry will say the Wii U is a hit.

  11. Yeah right, there are 5 levels in the demo and after that you can make a review about a game. Well done EDGE, just shut up.

    1. That’s almost an entire world if we’re going with the mario bros format; which this games seems to have judging by the demo.

  12. It is pretty obvious this is a rehash of a game. Same old Mario over and over and over and over and over….and over. Where is the innovation and originality they said they were bringing to the Wii U because the Wii U is a different platform. I don’t see any game where they using their unique hardware in a way that couldn’t be done on any tablet.

  13. They’re totally right. It looks very similar to the 3DS game. When I first saw it in the direct since the quality was so low and the buffering I thought it was a new 3DS game til I was able to look at it more closely. I’m sure it will be fun but innovative it’s not. I just hope that Nintendo is working on a lot of other killer titles that they have yet to show and these games are just quickly made to provide something for the console, otherwise the WiiU is in serious trouble.

  14. I thought the same thing. And I’m a crazy Nintendo fan. I was very disappointed. I really wanted a truly new Mario experience, not for Nintendo to make a rehash. I loved the 3ds one, but we need more for Wii u.

  15. For once, I think I actually agree with EDGE. This looks like a 3DS port.

I can only hope that a TRUE 3D platformer is in the works somewhere.

  16. Sorry folks, but it’s true. And I’m a long time Nintendo fan so don’t go throwing words like ”YOU’RE JUST A HATER”, that’d be pathetic.
SMB 3d World is to SMB 3d land what NSMBW was to the one of the DS:
    Same game+ multiplayer.
And that’s an objective fact, doesn’t mean the game will be bad (though I personally hated 3D land so I can hardly imagine myself liking this one any better), just that it IS a recycled idea.

    1. You are an immature bitch who can’t face facts. And you’re not a true Nintendo fan like the rest of us who know Nintendo can do much better.

  17. I’m tired of all the negativity based on intuition, speculation and bias. If you have no facts to back up your opinion, why not be positive or do like Bambi’s mother said and if you have nothing nice to say it’s better to say nothing at all!!!

  18. This game does looks fun, but I hope it isn’t the only 3D Mario on the Wii U. Nintendo, can we please have a Mario game with an actual storyline? I don’t know, involve Sarasaland, Beanbean Kingdom, The Dark Lands. Have Wario and Waluigi appear. Make it a fully open world Mario game. Be able to explore all 4 kingdoms.

  19. They had so much potential to take the new 3d Mario somewhere new given the increased performance of the wii u over the wii but instead decided to do a copycat game like they have been doing recently. I agree with edge in that it looks exactly like 3d world especially on the switching boxes that they show on the trailer. It really just shows a lack of effort. They need a new team to work on Mario with fresh ideas. I probably will not buy this one just because its more of the same although, I do not doubt it will be a great game but it’s just quite lackluster at this point.

    1. Yeah, after this game was shown, I went ”k, I have no faith in Mario now” He used to reinvent himself with each game, from SM64, to Sunshine, to Galaxy and now…no more innovation.

  20. NonGamers and Sony drones are buying the Wii U in multitudes. They are even defending the Wii U on IGN those sony drones are. That because the xboxdone is done lol. Nintendo fans like it or not, the 3D Mario is for selling consoles period.

  21. I don’t see this game as the true 3d Mario we came to expect. I see it more as a crutch for the wii u. Easy to make, looks fun, and will sell well.
The true 3d Mario I believe we will see in 2 years or so.

  22. I was having trouble with the live stream for the direct.when it started working, this game was showing and I thought they were showing some 3ds stuff. Then I find out this is the ” NEW WII U MARIO”. It went down hill fast after that. Fuck wii u! Looks like its 3ds and ps4 from now on.

  23. Of course the elemets are gonna be similar, it’s a sequel. If EDGE don’t think they’ve made higher poly models/environments they’re kidding themselves. Needlessly hating on Nintendo cause their boyfriend (Micro$oft) died on it’s feet at E3 and is now officially out of the console race.

  24. This has been a complaint of mine regarding the most recent Mario games… same game assets being used across the various Nintendo platforms.
Its lazy and I think this time is one too many trips to that same pool of assets.
Quite narrowing the history of Super Mario to just the Mario Party game models and assets, Nintendo.

Some things I would like to see from Nintedo and the Mario Universe.

I’d love to see Yoshi’s island from Super Mario World re-explored after so many years, make it a real dinosaur island where Yoshi is the proper star, no baby versions of Mario or anyone else. Just a romping good adventure starring Yoshi who has to save his babies or even his… uhh… partner… Birdo. Ahem!

    Quite progressive of you Nintendo.

I’d love to see Saharasa Land once again, give Luigi a proper story with his Daisy as his damsel in distress. Maybe a Super Luigi Galaxy with Luigi as the star and Princess Daisy in need of rescuing from the evil alien Tatanga. Why? Because It would actually make sense this time, an alien from space in a space themed Mario Game….
Have Princess Daisy’s Kingdom be Egyptian themed… and those Sphinx-like villains return…

I’d love to see the return of Wart along with his minions, Fryguy, the Six Headed Snake, Mouser and evil Birdos. Bring back the dream world of Subcon and maybe Zombie filled Subcon with a Zombified Wart.

How about a story with Pauline… gone Fatal Attraction psycho. Working with Donkey Kong to get revenge on Mario and Peach. Classic Donkey Kong Vs. Mario and barrels.

Or… introduce a new Mario siblin… a sister or younger brother with his or her own adventure.

Speaking of Donkey Kong… whatever happened to Donkey Kong Jr. That guy and his game needs a major resurgance… the original game only had about 5 levels, c’mon Nintendo… a posteriori. Look back and reignite these long lost babies and quite cooking the same assets up… you pimps!

And finally… isn’t about time that the other Nintendo franchises crashed the Mario Kart universe!?
C’mon Nintendo this would frakking rule… bring F-Zero, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox and so on to the racing circuit… it would would be brilliant. Having their worlds or levels included in the game would be awesome and a dream come true… who the hell works at Nintendo? Rick Berman!?

    As for the developers-
    Whatever happened to HAL?
Does HAL still own the Adventures of Lolo series?
    Bring Lolo to Smash Bros…
Bring Lolo games onto the VC and a brand new game with it.

The NEW Adventures of Lolo with even more devious puzzles!
Or have an option where you can build a tower with your own user created puzzle levels.
    That would be awesome!
The suicide button that Lolo had as an option for when he gets stuck could be fun… depending on your sense of humour.
Several ways Lolo can off himself or be offed when said button it pressed…

A Rock Kirby falls out of the sky and kills him…
A Lakitu drops an anvil on him…
He explodes… guts and good splatter onto the screen.
    He melts…
    He bursts into flames…
He gets eaten by insect… too dark?!

Okay… there would be a reset button then. spoilsports!

Another franchise I’d love to see in Nintendo’s hand is Taito’s Bubble Bobble!

Imagine having Bub and Bob in Smash Bros… they put you in a bubble and pop you.
Or if they collect enough letters, you get stunned unable to move where they would come and sending you flying and you turn into jewels or delicious food.

    Okay… one more!
    Namco Bandai owns Pacman right?
Is it safe to assume that he will make an appearance in Smash Bros.

Imagine he gets the cherry and turns everyone into a weakly ghost that he can chase and devour if your too slow.
Anyway…. I am getting myself a tad bit depressed seeing as most of this will never happen…

    “sigh”

    :o

  25. My first thought yesterday when I saw this game during the Nintendo Direct was “wow, that is going to be an AMAZING 3DS game.” Took me a while to figure out it was actually for the Wii U. So, this isn’t really surprising. The good news is that this probably means there’s a full fledged 3D Mario game in development too… it just isn’t coming out this year. Maybe they even intended on showing the full fledged Mario when they announced that it would be appearing at E3 this year in January’s Nintendo Direct, and they shoe-horned this game in instead so it could be released this year. They can’t exactly show off both games at once, because then each game would undermine the other.

    1. i really wish i wouldnt have to keep saying that, being a LOYAL fan for so long and all but, it is time to step of the 80’s train and join the new world.
i wont post again about nintendos habits.
sorry if i offended anyone with this or any of my posts.

  26. DarklordNintendoFan

And… so what if they’re reusing assets from Super Mario 3D Land? If it helps to make a great game, then by all means, reuse assets! And just because it’s a sequel to a handheld game does NOT MEAN that it was originally meant for the handheld as well! There have been games that were released on a console that had their sequels released for handhelds. Does that mean that they were originally meant for the console? No? Then shut the fuck up. These people probably defend CoD on a regular basis, despite the obvious fact that they reuse EVERYTHING for that series.

  27. OK first .. this coming out does not mean there will not be a another 3d Mario the system just came out … the game is not even out yet so give it a chance before you bash it .. the game will be fun and it will sell .. now another Point to make is that Nintendo has tried to movie Mario and some other titles into different routes with things like sunshine and wind waker but every time they get back lash for saying its to different .. a lot of gamers will cry for something new but when they get it they just want more of the same

  29. They say that they want to try to make a 3D Land-esque experience with multiplayer, and that is whay it’s in Wii U.
