GM Of Nintendo Germany Apparently Says We’ll See Mario Kart 8 & Smash Bros In Spring 2014

Bernd Fakesch, the General Manager of Nintendo Germany, has apparently told a German news agency that we should see the next instalment of Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 sometime next spring. We already knew that Mario Kart was due to be released in the spring, but most of us expected Smash Bros next Christmas. Hopefully this turns out to be true.

“For next spring two more big license games are also announced for our TV console with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros.”

      1. I do agree that it is way too early. The game shouldn’t be finished by that time and having two big Nintendo games at around the same time is counter productive. That being said, I’d still be super excited for an early release and I would pick it up on day 1!

        1. Under normal conditions, I would say two big games at the same time is not ideal, but with how wii u sales have been, maybe just pushing out two big hitters at the same time might work in favor of moving wii u units instead of spacing their release.

          1. They do need to do something to help the Wii U, so in that respect, it’ll be a good move. It’s risky, but if it works then #GoNintendo! Either way I’ll be picking them both up eventually

        2. Remember, Its not just Sakurai’s team working but Namco Bandai is also helping so the game should come out faster than usual. Although I hope it isnt rushed.

          1. Yes, although he mentioned that a lot of it he has to do himself right? I thought that there was an MNN article where he explained that he has to do the hit boxes for all of the attacks for every character on his own so that it would stay consistent. Namco Bandai does definitely help to reduce the time in other areas though. What I think they should do is release the 3DS version in Spring if they need too and then release the Wii U version later on

      2. Nintendo is doing it to get good games out as fast as possible. We don’t have time for Nintendo to take “there” time.

RELEASE SMASH BROS! WE ALL WANT IT AND IT SELLS CONSOLES!

              1. Did you buy it just to troll, or are you simply brutally blunt with your comments. It your one and only reason to own one is to troll, then I will take your advice and pass. ;)

      1. Well technically it is, WiiFit Trainer n all.
If she’s anything like Zero Suit Samus, then she’ll claim thousands of salty tears.

    1. How ? Are two games really enough to make the year “yours” ? After SSB and MK there’s going to be another drought of games for the WiiU. If you ask me, it’s not going to be “your” year at all.

      1. Watch Dogs, Bayonetta 2, Yoshi Land U, Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Monolith Softs X game, Zelda HD, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Miyamoto’s new game. You call that a drought? All that will be 2014. Miyamotos MIGHT NOT BE but its SHOULD be. Also Fire Emblem X SMT maybe lol.

        1. Watch Dogs is probably not going to sell too well on WiiU anyway, we all know how 3rd party multiplats sell on Nintendo platforms. Besides, it’s going to be released in spring as well, so yea, not relevant at all because there’s still gonna be a drought in the following months.
Bayonetta 2 was not yet announced for 2014, so don’t get your hopes up too quickly.
I mentioned Smash Bros. and Mario Kart in my comment so I don’t know what you think is the point of mentioning them again. I was talking about a drought -after- those two titles.
Zelda HD is most likely not going to be released in 2014, and even if, it’s going to be towards the end of 2014, so no, this is not an argument against the drought I am talking about. There still would be no major titles scheduled for the period between spring and the end of the year, if Zelda HD really was to be released in 2014, which is probably not even going to happen.
Donkey Kong TF will be released before MK and SSB. So again, no point in mentioning this because it is no argument against the drought the WiiU will experience after spring.
And Miyamoto’s new game… There is no single information about that game yet, so I don’t know what makes you think we’ll see that game getting released in 2014.
X doesn’t even have a release date either and considering we haven’t seen anything about it since the announcement, I’d say it is most likely not too far in development. Which means, probably no release in 2014.
There was no Fire Emblem game announcement for the WiiU, so again, I have no idea where you are pulling this out from.
–tl;dr– Yes, the WiiU is most likely going to experience a software drought in 2014 if there aren’t going to be any new announcements. You shouldn’t have wasted your time to write that comment because, as you can see, I have proven it to be entirely pointless.

          1. Monolith began X’s development shortly after Xenoblade’s Japanese release in 2010. I can easily see it being released next fall after another trailer is shown off at E3.

            1. That doesn’t mean the West is going to see it anytime soon. And even if its development began roughly 3 years ago, all we saw was a trailer and to me, that means they are not too far with it yet. Besides, games can take several years to be finished, so the fact that the development started in 2010 doesn’t really tell that much.

          2. You are wrong……. Fire emblen x SMT was announced so get your facts straight.

Project cars will also release on wii u next year, lego the move will also release next year… there is a yoshi game in developement too so that might release in the so call drought….. there are tonnes of indie games releasing too…. so please stop trolling

            Get N or get out!!!!!!

            1. Oh, excuse my error, I read that as Fire Emblem and X, instead of Fire Emblem x SMT. Since the author wrote a capital X, I assumed he was referring to two different games. Sorry about that.
And I doubt the Yoshi game will launch early enough, to be honest. We can’t know for certain, but that’s just what I think.
And I don’t think neither Lego The Movie nor Project Cars are games the majority of WiiU owners are interested in, but yes, you are right, those will launch next year. But two not-very-major games are unfortunately not enough to save the WiiU from a drought.

              1. Thats a shame N users arent supporting lego more. Lego city was a FANTASTIC game! Nintendo really shouldve tried to secure exclusivity on the lego games.. it wouldve been a huge system seller imo.

            2. Oh, and I’m not trolling, I’m just stating facts, the obvious. I’m sorry if you can’t take the truth very well, but denying that the WIiU’s lineup for the upcoming year doesn’t look very good so far won’t change reality.
And keep that “Get N or get out” thing to yourself, I’ve been a supporter of Nintendo for nearly two decades now, but I am able to accept reality unlike many of you, obviously.

          3. Fire Emblem X SMT has been mentioned multiple times as being a WiiU exclusive. Has been in development for some time now.

      1. Yeah, what happened to X? That mecha game looked so awesome and I’ve been waiting for it to come out so that I can get it. Believe it or not, it’s the Wii U game that I’m hyped for The Most aside from Smash Bros. It looks like it could be the start to a new and great franchise!

        1. Yea, the troubling thing is everyone else is now flooding the game market with mecha games, so X wont have as much of an impact as some are hoping for. They should keep very tight lipped about it to keep all the copy cats that inevitably ALWAYS steal nintendo’s ideas from jumping the gun.

          1. True, but we saw the trailer so long ago that I feel like they should be deep in development by now. I really can’t wait for that game and it’ll beat any copy cat that tries to cross it. Honestly, a mecha game hasn’t looked this good since Dynasty Warriors Gundam

      2. Actually I don’t belive that X will lauch in 2014 in the west unless they are doing what they did with Pokémon but if they aren’t then X will launch 2014 in Japan and 2015/16 in the west

        1. No it wont be Xenoblade all over again. Nintendo already said its coming to the west. It will probably come to the west like 2-3 week after Japan.

    1. A new Metroid, X, Zelda, Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem and two new AAA IP’s (one in the vein of The Last of Us and another one similar to nothing we’ve ever seen before) ofcourse.

… or maybe I’m putting my hopes up too high… :/

      1. Im hoping Metroid is already in secret development and will be a holiday release next year.. big hopeful, but we will see. Would be awesome if Retro had already finished 98% of DKTF before original launch date and has been working on Metroid while another studio works on final polish.

    2. Well they only announced stuff like 3D World in July, so imagine it’ll be similar.
They show new stuff early next year then at E3.

  1. I always thought Mario Kart 8 was coming Mars/April, but I didn’t think SSB was coming before at least summer!

  2. Mario Kart 8 is Gonna be In April. But I doubt Smash Bros Will be in Spring,They Delayed Brawl Multiple Times,So They could Delay it as well,Im expecting in Q3 or Q4 of 2014! I cant Wait!

        1. So they say…. I still feel as though it will still have a story mode. Either one that leaked or an entirely new one. They are just leaving it as a launch discovery. Wouldn’t be in the vein of Nintendo just to release it without a story mode. I may be wrong, but I guess we will see.

    1. True, but with Namco Bandai helping that dramatically boosts development time since there is more people to divide up the work with. Plus Sakurai had a plan in his head for what he wanted to do before he even started the game, plus lack of cinematic story mode that’s less to do. All they have to do is make characters, items, stages, and balance it out. Its not that deep of a game lol. Plus just by looking at the Pics of the day you can tell Smash Bros is WAY FAR in development. Sakurai himself refuses to take a vacation or a day off, his wrists were being damaged by continuous playing, he wants to work work work till its done. So it should be 1st half of 2014.

    1. Nah sakurai is spending day and night working on it. He always gives 110% we working on a game. Melee was made within a year and its the most popular. I hope we get a new character announcement soon.

    2. Namco is assisting…its not rushed it has a faster development time cause their is over 2 times that amount of people working on it then Brawl.

  3. I know I’m not the only one, but if the 3DS version offers online play, I’m going with that.

I have a fucking awesome library of games, Miiverse. If I get a messaging system, my WiiU will just be my Zelda, Metroid, Indie machine.

      1. The 3DS version is holding back the Wii U version though. So honestly they should be about the same in quality. Wii U one is HD sure but other then that they will both be great.

    1. Both will have online, though I’m getting both, but I’ll be playing the wii u version the the most do to the stronger since of comfort. I’ve played tekken and SF IV on 3ds they are good but it felt uncomfortable at times, much rather play my console version. plus there is the whole 3ds and wii u custom thing.

      1. I’m definitely going for Wii U-version. If it’s really good I’m also going for 3DS. Most of my friends have 3DS’s so it might be fun to play each other on the train, plane or on school… But Wii U-version is prioritized.

  4. “We already knew that Mario Kart was due to be released in the spring, but most of us expected Smash Bros next Christmas. Hopefully this turns out to be true.”
Im sorry I dont want Sakurai to rush Smash Bros just because people want it right now. Take your time, I dont mind to wait until december next year.

  5. if true, BAD idea to release smash brod so soon. sakurai is a dumb twat taking forever with the game and his refusal to include DLC will leave us with an unfinished, mediocre, dumbed down (because 3DS) smash bros game.

      1. No. It was already said that it’s going to be the same game with even same characters since they didn’t want anyone to feel neglected because they have an inferior version. The only differences are probably going to be game specific stages and graphics.

    1. DLC in fighting games is stupid. And if he is taking forever doesn’t that mean he is adding content. Sakurai has added nothing but content to his games, he puts tons and tons of effort then most devs.

  6. I’ll be on Wii U, fighting games just feel better on a console to me, especially Smash. The fights are too epic to be on my XL screen when I have a HD 70 inch tv in my living room :p

  7. It is hard for me to think Nintendo would release 2 of the biggest hitters in the same season. I think one will be on spring the other until christmas of next year.

    1. Agreed. That wouldn’t be a smart move on Nintendo’s move to release them both at around the same time and I don’t believe that Smash Bros is ready. Let’s give Sakurai until Christmas at least, plus it would be the perfect game to release for the holidays!

      1. Actually they already did this in the spring of 2008 with MKWii and SSBB and it was one of the best sales the Wii got that wasn’t in a holiday and Smash could be ready by spring

        1. I didn’t realize that. That’s definitely a great point then since this could happen again. I’m still not sure about it, but if the move worked last time, then they could have similar results. I’ll be getting both games anyway although Smash Bros will be my day 1 buy. I’d rather that they not release it so soon though so that they can keep on adding new things to the game

    2. Why, they did the same with A Link between Worlds (even though it’s not a WiiU game, it does affect people who don’t have enough money to buy more than one game around the same period), Super Mario 3D World and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games, if you want to count that one in as well, since it’s a Mario game of some sorts. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo rushed both games out around the same time, hoping to finally get some sales.

  8. Mario Kart will, but not sure about Smash…
Although, in a perfect world, it would be out in time for EVO, but…you know.

    1. nothing is 100%. Plus give sakurai credit he has gotten alot down. He has been working on the game after kid icarus was released 2011 I believe. So its been worked on for about nearly 2years

      1. Hey if it’s not ready, then it’s not ready , that’s fine.
Just saying it would be nice to have it out by EVO.

  9. Here is the thing amount smash on 3ds and wii u , in my opinion. While the 3ds will sell more due to its massive install base it will be more casual among the smash community. The wii u version will be seen as the version people should go for due to maximum level of comfort. I’ve been to few fighting tournaments, Ive seen people use 3ds version of SFIV for casual play and same for the pc version. The console crowd is still the much prefer. I think both version will be great, but the wii u version has everything above the 3ds version. Better design stages(not graphically but just put together better), bigger screen, and stronger level of control and comfort. I’m getting both, but Its 100% true that i will play the wii u version more then my 3ds version can’t say the same for everyone else but it might be the same.

  10. I know Mario Kart will come out this coming Spring, but I got a feeling that Smash Bros might be might be released later in the year..

  11. We know that Mario Kart 8 will be great, but I hope they’re not rushing Smash Bros. That kind of game can not be rushed – it’s done when it’s done.

  12. I don’t trust Fils-Aime as far as I can throw him, but he claims that in 2014 the Wii U will have a consistent flow of games all year long. 1st-party games no less. Based on the history of the 3DS, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that there are probably a lot of games slated to be released on the Wii U in 2014 that have not been announced yet and that Nintendo wants to capitalize on the tax-refund crowd by having major releases in the spring.

Then again, who knows. I doubt that Smash Bros will be out so soon. However Nintendo never rushes anything so if they are releasing Smash Bros. in the spring that is a good thing for multiple reasons.

    1. Really reggie has no power he is told what to say and show by NOJ. NOA job is marketing(which hasn’t been that great but has improved), and a few more jobs. Reggie is just a figure head

          1. No, you are by replying with a condescending comment. I know who Reggie Fils-Aime is and his job duties. What was the point of telling me that? It has no bearing on what I said.

Furthermore, that fact that he is in charge of marketing is the reason why he would know if the Wii U will have a steady flow of games in 2014 why is why he told journalists (whom asked if there would be anymore Wii U software droughts) that would be the case for the Wii U in 2014.

Think next time before you respond.

            1. I wasn’t trying to make it to… this I know what reggie said i just addedto what u said its all nintendo japan

    2. I dunno, I mean we have Kong, Kart Yoshi and X on Wii U. From the way Nintendo talks. Zelda is pretty far along, and thats just the stuff we know about. Not to mention Kirby for 3DS. And those are just the things we know about.

      1. Nintendo hasn’t given a solid date to any of those games expect DKC:TF. We also don’t know how far along Zelda is. Just because it is in a showable form doesn’t mean it is anywhere close to being done. Nintendo has not said ANYPLACE that Zelda would be a 2014 title All they have said for sure is that it will be shown at E3 2014.

Zelda games traditionally take several years to develop and Zelda has been in development less than one. They flat out told us that Zelda was going to take several years to make which is why they released Windwaker HD.

I’ll state again, Fil-Aime has stated that the Wii U in 2014 will have a constant flow of games. We will see.

    1. again the only smash to get delayed is brawl. That was due to SSE. The game has been in development for almost 2 years, so sakurai has gotten things done, he just might be editing characters before he can show them

        1. Well these aren’t leaks they are rumors, no should listen strongly to them. Just sayin ssbb was delayed because of sse and it was the only smash delay

      1. Except… Brawl started development in 2005… we didn’t see it until 2008. Thats 3 dang years. I know he has more people working with him this time, but he isn’t going to rush anything, also, the man is making TWO games this time… And from the way he talks about it on Miiverse in the captions of the pictures. He has said more then once, that there are so many things that are subject to change… I’m sure they’re pretty far along with the game, but I really don’t believe they are anywhere near done.

        1. sakurai wasn’t aware of brawls development, he found out in 2006 it was in development, and they asked him to join the development, he had to edit lots of data the team missed up on. plus the story mode took up massive development time, and is the reason the game was pushed to 2008

  13. We already knew Mario Kart was coming in the Spring. Smash… Don’t even joke like that, everyone who follows smash anything knows it won’t be out in the spring, if we’re REALLY lucky and we do our tribal luck dance MAYBE we’ll get it by christmas, but I wouldn’t put money on it. Let smash take as long as it needs. I’M READY TO KART!

  14. I must own this game! Think of the DLC if Nintendo chooses to add at a steady stream throughout the Wii U life span…Stages…Items Characters! I can see this game selling into the hundred of thousands upon release and millions into the future!!

  15. MY NINTENDO NEWS YOU DERP SHIT NO ONE ON THE PLANET EXCEPT YOU THOUGHT SMASH WAS A CHRISTMAS GAME

LOL ITS A FIRST HALF TITLE LIKE DONKY KONG AND DAT KART 8 NO ONE EVER SAID ANY OF THESE GAMES WAS SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR DUMB BASTARDS

I EXPECT DONKY KONG MARIO KART AND SMASH BY JUNE-JULY AT THE VERY LATEST THESE ARE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR GAMES

EXPECT GALAXY 3 FOR XMAS or other top exclusives

  16. “Brawl started development in October 2005, was propely unveiled in May 2006 (so it had about 8 months of dev time) to be released in December 2007, so it would’ve had 2 years and a couple of weeks of dev time. Then it got delayed to January 31 2008, so it has about 2 years and 2 months of development time.

Meanwhile, look at Smash 4. it’s development probably started months after Uprising (released March 2012), and was properly revealed in June 2013 ( 1 year or so of dev time) and rumored to be released in May 2014 ( 2 years and a couple of months of dev time)

Factor in Namco Bandai’s involvement, and the release is looking really plausible.”

  17. Yes! Next year the wind will really start blowing into the Wii U’s sails. I can’t wait to see it ride triumphantly across the seas of glory.

  18. SherlockWillFightBilbo

It’s most likely not being rushed. Sakurai’s been working on the game every day since Kid Icarus: Uprising launched in spring 2012. That would give it nearly two years of development, which is absolutely fine. They only need two years because they’re doing two versions, one of which is HD.

  19. Pingback: Nintendo GM Says New Mario Kart 8 & Smash Bros in Spring 2014 | Nerdz Affiliated

  20. Ohhhh no. No! I refuse to be tricked anymore by statements said by anyone who works for Nintendo. I always get my hopes up and start to get really excited and every time, they take it away from me. In my mind, Mario Kart 8 and SSB are coming out in 2015. There…Now that I believe that anything sooner will make me happy.

  21. I believe it COULD be done by late Spring of next year if that representative is right. As long as Sakurai can still strangle a Zeti, his hands are fine. Not to mention, the unlockables shouldn’t be revealed until after the game is out like what happened with Brawl (though the Japanese version came out first due to the delay).

  22. Nintendo likes to spread out there big releases on a platform. Let’s say, therefore, that Mario Kart 8 comes out in the beginning of Spring and Smash Bros. comes out at the end of the Spring… that gives us a lineup that looks something like this:

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – Feb 21
    Mario Kart 8 – April
Super Smash Bros. U – June

That’s not too shabby. I suspect we’ll get a Nintendo Direct in either January or February that gives us more details on the Wii U’s lineup for the first half of 2014. We’ll know more soon enough.

  23. We all knew about Mario Kart 8 being March/April. I have been saying Smash Bros would be 1st half of 2014 for awhile now. Most likely June. a week or 2 after E3. A Nintendo rep said that Smash Bros 3DS was “Coming Soon” back in like October.

  24. It would be the wrongest thing to do of Nintendo to release two of their biggest games during the same time. If this is seriously going to happen, there will be another major drought of games, and that certainly wouldn’t be good at all for the WiiU. Nintendo better don’t be stupid enough to not to see that.

  25. They both need functional online multiplayer. Mario Kart 8 this Spring and Super Smash U in the Summer. Or whatever they do, they need really good online functionality. I want easy matchmaking for both.

  26. Bring DK Tropical Freeze in February, Mario Kart 8 in May, Super Smash Bros U in August, then Metroid Prime Trilogy HD remake for October and Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword HD collection in November and Super Mario Sunshine HD and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 HD collection for December.

    1. Those would be awesome.. But, c’mon… We have this awesome new console and all you want for it is remakes? I’d rather have new, exciting games that take advantage of the Wii U’s unique hardware.

  27. Pingback: Wii U『マリオカート8』と『大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ』は来春発売。独任天堂GMがコメント | t011.org

  28. I’m as big a Nintendo fan as any, but while they usual like to space out 1st party releases, this is totally believable. They want to support the system as aggresively as possible. That really doesn’t mean any of it will be rushed, it just means more people on the projects, more hours put in. They said themselves they were making moves to shorten development times in the future. Considering they released Pikmin, W101, Zelda, and SMB3DW in August, September, October, and November respectively, I’m sure next year will follow suit. Bayo2 doesnt have a date but I’m sure it’s still 2014. Also, everyone jumps to Feb with DKC:TF, but the first First-party release will be the retail version of Wii Fit U in January. I know it’s not on everyone’s radar, but I like my physical media (even though I did the whole Fit Meter bit). Let’s not forget 2013 had a lot of other decent releases, like Splinter Cell, Skylanders, COD Ghosts, Rayman Legends, Sonic. My Wii U collection is up to 68 and it’s a pretty respectable selection of games.

  29. It would be the shit if we get Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. 4, SMT X FE, X, Bayonetta 2, and Yoshi’s Yarn before E3 and then we have a slew of great announcements at E3 and some of the major titles announced then will arrive during the Fall and Winter seasons.

    1. MK8 is most likely gonna hit it’s Sprint target window, but man I’d love Bayonetta 2 and Smash before E3. Ninty should throw Bayo1 in as a preorder incentive for Bayo2!

  34. Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking
for something completely unique. P.S Sorry
for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
