Playtonic Talk About Yooka-Laylee For The Wii U And Amiibo

Studio Head of Playtonic Games, Gavin Price, sat down to do an interview with MCV about Yooka-Laylee— which you’ve probably already heard about by now. Apparently, he was nervous about how things would go on their Kickstarter, which is funny now considering they’ve raised 3 times their goal in the first day. With only seven full time staff, it’s amazing what they’ve created in only 3 months. Imagine the magic they’ll create with so much funding– magic that they hope to bring to the Wii U.

Apparently Price is a huge fan of Nintendo, and is determined to bring Yooka-Laylee to the Wii U, as they’re using multi-platform engine, Unity. He’s also a huge amiibo collector, and has already pitched the idea of Yooka-Laylee amiibos! But it’s a slow process discussing possibilities with a big company, so there are no details on that yet except that it’s very much in their plans. Their main goal seems to be to get that good old feeling of playing on the Nintendo 64, and reproducing how games were ‘back in the day.’ And they seem absolutely dedicated!

We love this type of concept, where the game doesn’t come to you with any kind of agenda. Today, it’s all about hitting certain features and demographic groups. I think those games end up getting appreciated by lots, but not loved to the degree as games were back in the day. The passion and love people had for games back in the 1990s was so much stronger than it is today.

Additionally, Grant Kirkhope has released the first musical piece from the upcoming 3D platformer. If you wish to listen to the Jungle track with its superb jump-to-the-beat fluid tones, check it out below.

Thanks, paidenthusiast

  1. Nintendo being an old-fashioned behemoth will probably fail to make this happen, but it would be a smart move. Seeing the popularity surrounding this game, amiibo functionality could ensure that people want to buy it on their Wii U rather than their PC. Go for it Nintendo.

    1. I think Nintendo will absolutely go for it…

And it’s true what he said about games in the 90’s. Although my passion for gaming has never been higher than it is right now…

It’s great to see how much they’ve gotten in these hours. It should show not only Nintendo but gamers and developers alike that people still like 3D kollect-a-thons. Not only that but the recent love that Banjo and K. rool is getting for Smash is showing that Nintendo needs to stop ignoring fans. We want 3D games for example 3D donkey kong. But what they give us? A 2D platformer with a new type of enemy that we don’t want. We want a full blown 3D mario game. What do they give us? A camara stuck up view 3D game of Mario.
Nintendo and all developers need to understand that Playtonic Games did what they don’t. Listen to what the fans wanted. That’s how it’s got 500,000 euros in one day. Not only 400,000 more than the goal but half of their million stretchgoal.

    1. nintendo has not abandon the idea they didn’t used it. and please stop complaining about tropical freeze its a good game

        1. Not to be argumentative, but I actually like the new DKC games a TON more than the original games. I used to say that DKC2 was my favorite 2D sidescroller, but then I played the new games and realized how there wasn’t much in the way of diversity in gameplay in the original series (other than minecart and barrel blast stages, which the latter I thought to be quite annoying sometimes). Sure, the new DKC series isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s still, in my opinion, somewhat better than the original series (and I speak from experience, since I’ve at least 101%ed each game in the series, new and old, other than DKC3, which is the blandest game of the original series except for the map features which were pretty cool).

        2. Better then 3, and dk 64. Tropical freeze is damn good game. DK2 is my fave but tropical freeze is a close sec. Even some some of the old rare team lov the game. Technically 3d world, is collectathon you need to collect items within the game, it a really great game with amazing level design, and music. Galaxy 1/2 are still are my number 1, but 3d world is in the top 5, maybe above 64 in some areas, but haven’t thought of it in deth. The Snowmads were 100x better then those Shitty tiki’s . Would i want to see kremlings return yes, but am i shitting one game over it, no. The game has best level design i’ve seen in a while, it can rival what rare did in 1-3, even the swimming feels damn good, and relaxing. Over Tropical freeze to me, and others is just as good as any entry on snes

    2. What’s funny is that the original DKC trilogy is more popular than 64 yet people complain when we get games like the originals

      1. Kaptain Krusha K. Roolenstein

Depending on the time period and everything of course.
Sure the Snes sold more and the original DKC games were great (better than the recent ones) but this day and age, people want more 3D games. Not 2D games that almost we see everytime with these indies.

And time period! Video games back then were still expensive. Many people including me rented games for the N64 from blockbuster. Never really owned a lot.

        1. Who cares if a game is 2-d or 3-d, if its good, its good. Some games can only work in , and some were made to be 3d, or both, just have fun

  3. pink0crystal0midbus

Just listened to the musical piece and oh my god… It SCREAMS Banjo-Kazooie. I love it.

The xylophone and the tuba sounds are perfect.

    1. The music definitely sounds like something that David Wise would do. It sounds fantastic and very fitting for a game like this, I’m already sold

  4. it looked garbage ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE HYPING it looked terrible

and as for MULTI PLAT ENGINE 99% OF TURD PARTYS USE THEM NO EXCUSE FOR NO WIIU VERSION

    1. Umm, what are you talking about “no Wii u version”? They said they really want to put it on the Wii u and are going to when they get the money. Which I’ll bet a million dollars they will have met all their stretch goals by next week, or at least well before the kickstarters over.

      1. I’ll buy another Wii U when Nintendo removes region lock and creates a universal account system…

        1. You don’t own a Wii U? So why did you even bother to comment on this thread? You don’t belong here Pretendo fan

              1. Lol. Well, I guess that would work on paidenthusiast. If he won’t have an intelligent conversation with you, just insult him the way he does to everyone else. XD

                1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

                  >>>You’re continuing to try making everyone believe that you and your original account are not one and the same, how cute>>>

          1. Here’s a comment I made about 5 months ago.
“I am a Nintendo fan. Even if I didn’t own or buy their products, I’d still be following news about them regularly.” So there you have it. That’s why I’m still here. I just want them to get their stuff together. Doesn’t mean I hate em though.

        2. Dude, region lock or not, Zelda U and Xenoblade Chronicles X alone justify’s owning a Wii U.. Even if those were the only two games you played on the system it would be money well spent…

Have fun missing out on two of the best game this generation..

            1. I was being sarcastic… Oh well,… You obviously don’t mind missing out on good games, so no point in trying to convince you otherwise….

              1. The only reason I still held on to the Wii U was because of the exclusives, but I’m over it now. Nintendo’s decisions aggravated me to the point where I really don’t care how good the games are anymore. I just don’t want to deal with it. I won’t deny that it has great games like Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors though. Unless Nintendo manages to fix the issues, I may just wait for the next system instead. You couldn’t pay me to buy a Wii U at this point. I’m pretty much done with it.

                1. I buy Nintendo games because they are fun to play. Period. I don’t like some of Nintendo’s idiotic decisions either. The way they are releasing Xenoblade X is beyond stupid, amoung other things. But I don’t let that interfere with the amazing software they produce! And you shouldn’t either… Well, as long as you have a Ps4 you will still have games like The Witcher, Arkham City, Elder Scrolls 6…… So this gen. wont be a complete loss anyways….

          1. Are you seriously still complaining about that? I said that the free games they give you make up for it. And you get discounts and exclusives from the store as well. I don’t have to pay for it if I don’t want to, you do realize that, right? I simply started out with a 3 month subscription to test it out and because I planned on mainly playing online games on the PC instead. And even that was only $18. I already downloaded a PS Plus game that was $15 alone. I am not saying they SHOULD charge for online because I would definitely prefer if it was free. What I am saying though is that for the things you get along with it and the price, you can’t really complain. And like I said before, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Even after I get a PC that doesn’t mean I’ll stop my subscription for PS+. But there’s obviously no reason trying to explain this to you because you defend literally everything Nintendo does. And why are you being so dramatic about it? I’d like to see what Nintendo fanboys like you would do if they charged for online. And you can’t be a hypocrite either. If you hate online subscriptions, then you would avoid getting a Nintendo system if they made you pay, right? But knowing you, you’d find a way to damage control it. “Oh, but Nintendo has better games tho!”

            1. Accept everything Nintendo does? I haven’t defended the voice chat problem with Splatoon, I’ve complained about game droughts and you can see in the first post of this article that I can’t stand amiibo’s. I own a PS4 as well dude and I’m refusing to pay for PS+ for online because it’s a bad business practise. I don’t give a shit about the so called free games that you lose if you don’t renew your subscription. Talk about damage control, it doesn’t make up for anything for people that just want to play online. I just totally ripped you apart. Tell me, you getting Batman on release? Probably will because you sheep don’t know any better.

              1. Whats wrong with getting Arkham Knight on release? Hell, that game is the reason I bought a PS4! LOL.. Arkham Knight comes from one of the best developers in the game. They have proven themselves with Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Their games never have glitches, and are some of the best games of last gen. There is absolutely no reason to doubt Rocksteady. If your referring to that ridiculous season pass, you don’t have to buy it, and it’s obviously WB’s doing, not Rocksteady.

                1. Yer, it’s about the season pass. Why would you buy the game at $60 when you know you aren’t getting the full game?

              2. I want to get Arkham Knight, but I don’t think I’ll be able to get it day one. Also, what does that have to do with anything? Are you just looking for things to complain about?

                  1. Wtf? I didn’t know that. That is pretty ridiculous… XD Yeah, I’ll just wait for a sale or something. Lol.

        3. It’s delicious how such superficial and meaningless ‘issues’ can prevent you from buying the best console of this gen.

          1. Universal account systems are not meaningless. When my Wii U wasn’t working, I couldn’t just buy a new one. I had to send it directly to Nintendo so they could repair it. And I had to pay for the shipping and wait for it to get over there too. That wasted a lot of my time. -_-

      1. No thanks. As much as I like the N64’s games, I don’t want to spend a ton of cash on those old games and risk getting a broken cartridge or something.

          1. Alright. I’ll consider it. But what about that other one? Nuts and Bolts? Is that any good?

            1. Its an ok game, but when compared to the original 2, no. Its strays off from what made the original 2 great. The music is bland, the art direction is bad (subjectively of course,) and it forces the “creation” parts on you.

Overall, I think it’s an ok game, and if it was different IP people wouldn’t bash it. I say give it a shot if you want, but 1&2 aren’t like Nuts and Bolts.

    1. Banjo-Kazooie would be the superior choice obviously, but it seems harder to make it true. I do hope for it though.

  5. Why can’t nintendo just fund this like the did Bayo 2 and have it be exclusive, I see no reason not to

    1. I agree. I really hope Nintendo would swoop in make this exclusive only to their console since the other two are always doing that.

      1. That’s not going to happen because Playtonic, the studio making the game, knows that there are fans of these old school kinds games, and fans of Banjo-Kazooie, or Donkey Kong Country, on every console and they want everyone to be able to enjoy the game that they are putting in their time and effort to create for us.

  6. I think it’s funny how they’re doing more with $1,000,000 than mighty no 9 did with $4,000,000 I lost all interest in mighty no 9 when they said it’ going to be released in the fall when they promised a spring release

    1. I guess they could have released a half assed game in the Spring. I would rather have a quality experience in the fall.

  7. I did hear about this ina earlier post they have good design philosphies so i have faith in a excellent game to come!

    1. I know the credit card is charged when its funded, but do you know if even the fact it was accepted means there is enough money on it?

      1. I don’t they know how much is on your card, just the fact that they your card details is enough for now. You have until June 17th if I’m correct to have whatever amount of money you need, on your card :)

        1. Yeah, thing is, I think I have enough, but I have some doubts, because it’s actually a pre paid one. I can’t really check my balance, that’s why I’m not sure if they already know if I have enough or not. I don’t wanna do contact support in case an employee asks me something he/she isn’t supposed to about my card..

            1. I actually did search on google and stuff, but I just don’t trust other websites. Oh well, I guess I’ll see what I do. Thanks.

  8. Reached the kickstarter goal in 40 minutes. Haven’t they reached well over the amount needed?

  9. I apologize for critizing this game. They can have my money.

It’s just sad that further developed games like FreezeME with less financally stable devs couldn’t make even 15k and this thing is well on it’s way to 1.5 mil.

Not against this game, but my heart goes out to FreezeME devs in paticular.

  10. As long as the Yooka-Laylee amiibos aren’t as hard to find as a needle in a haystack, I’m all for it. The way so many amiibos have been in limited quantity has really stressed me out to the point of almost not caring. Heck, I wasn’t even able to pre-order a single wave 4 amiibo.
