Ori and the Blind Forest launched last year for the Xbox One and PC and looks like a game that would fit in extremely well on Nintendo platforms. One of the developers behind the game has sounded off on NeoGAF about how hard it is to get a Nintendo NX development kit. He says that it is not just Nintendo, but all hardware manufacturers are extremely secretive about their development kits. Moon Studios’ Thomas Mahler says that it’s worrying that the Nintendo NX is expected this year though only a few big developers are rumoured to have development kits for the platform. Mahler points out that it’s going to be difficult for Nintendo to get “software support, since nobody can just jumble games together in less than a year.”
“This is actually THE singlest most annoying thing for every dev out there. We also talked to Nintendo and got absolutely nothing – I’ll never understand that. And just to be clear, it’s not just Nintendo, every hardware manufacturer is treating their devkits and their unreleased consoles like they’re the second coming and are insanely secretive about it to a stupid degree in todays time. It’s not even that the hardware isn’t finished (duh), but you could at least give me the goddamn specs, so we’d know what to build s*** for!
“What’s needed to sell hardware is goddamn good software. With Nintendo not having any devkits out there at this point and probably even wanting to sell it in 2016, I can already guarantee that they’ll just not have any software support, since nobody can just jumble games together in less than a year. I mean, you can, but it’ll be garbage.”
“The same is true for Engine Support – Get Unity and Epic to support these consoles WAAAAY ahead of release. By the time the console launches, it should be EASY for developers to develop games for these systems, things shouldn’t just only start at this point. I want the goddamn devkits or at least proper hardware specs ideally 2 years before release – Keep all the developers updated, start a forum where devs can chat and all figure out the problem everyone’s having, instead of everyone just having to deal with it. None of that’s happening anywhere and it’s just braindamaged.”
Thanks, Paidenthusiast

He sounds angry for some reason, i never even heard of this developer before..
I hadn’t either until I got Ori. It’s a very beautiful game. The gameplay is very easy to grasp, but there are tricks that make it interesting. It’s definitly worth playing if you need something fairly relaxing at times.
Do these guys at least have a 3DS dev kit? or a Wii U dev kit? i mean, the current Indie devs on eShop started somewhere with Nintendo and these guys want to have the latest and greatest NOW?
Nintendo better wisen up a little and help these developers out. I really don’t think it is in anybody’s best interest for the NX to be a repeat of the Wii U.
It’s either that or Moon Studios are just the new kids on the block?
I think the reason that Nintendo is being so secretive about the NX is because they won’t the specs or it’s features leaked before they had the chance to talk about it. Remember, the late Satoru Iwata said that they didn’t want to talk about what the NX was early on because they didn’t want Sony nor Microsoft to steal their ideas. I’m pretty sure once they talk about what the NX is that they’ll immediately start sending out dev kits for it. With Nintendo being reported to have meetings and discussions with major 3rd party publishers/developers like EA, I think it’s safe to say that they are at least trying to avoid what happen with the Wii U as far as poor 3rd party relationships are concerned
“In 2011, Moon Studios became a Microsoft First Party Developer and announced it was working on Ori and the Blind Forest, which was released on March 11th, 2015 for Xbox One and PC via Steam.”
That was what you forgot to put it. BlackB0nd made a video about it, and everyone is saying Nintendo is dead already.
Keyword: “Patent”
Besides, who in their right mind would wanna steal ideas from Nintendo’s consoles these days. Been thrash since Wii. Only thing keeping them up have been Nintendo IPs. When it comes to just the console hardware Sony and Microsoft both use Nintendo’s hardware as toilet.

Well Sony and Microsoft copied the Wii so I’m pretty sure they don’t consider it trash lol
I’m pretty sure there are many people that work there that do. They’re obviously not gonna go online posting about it though because they’ll lose their job. Everyone has their own opinion. You can hate anything you want as long as you still respect people that actually like those things. Lol.

Ori and the blind forest is a REALLY good metroidvania would be a shame if nx didn’t get it
Not good… I hope Nintendo gets these devs kits out to all the big publishers in time so we can be able to see some of their games come out on the NX at launch and eventually at the same time as the other platforms. If the NX comes out this year with barely any support, people won’t see the big games they want, it won’t sell, then nobody will make games for it. Just like the Wii U. Do not let that happen!
But according to him Nintendo aren’t the only ones who do this when new hardware is being kept secretive and besides he’s a indie developer so he can be patient but I do understand his frustration because it sounds like that he really wants to develop for the NX. Most likely if the NX is releasing this year Nintendo has more than likely shipped out a lot of dev kits for it already but mainly for the major 3rd party publishers/developers and the bigger indie developers but you are right Nintendo does need to do a better job at getting their dev kits out a little quicker
I love this guy. I love how blunt he is being about his frustration and I really understand where he is coming from but i also understand where these hardware developers are coming from. When you are about to releases new hardware, especially video game consoles, secrecy and speculations are amazing tools for building hype and excitement for a product. with that said, it’s also very important for hardware manufactures to start bringing in developers early enough so that they can get the ball rolling on software development for said hardware. I guess it’s just a really tough balancing act because as soon as dev kits start going out to developers in droves that’s when information on the console will start leaking out in droves. That kind of information leak will kill speculation which in turn will kill the excitement of the unknown.
Well his first problem is expecting Nintendo to be reliable in some way. If they’re making you put in the unnecessary effort to put games on THEIR console, then that only means you’re better off making games for the competition.
If the dev kits came out recently I don’t expect NX to come out this year. The problem with dev kits coming out super early is that people have to learn how to use them and then start development. Games usually take just over a year to make without this added obstacle. Therefore, I think that it would be too much pressure for devs to expect them to release something in less than a year’s time with a new platform.
*”not coming out super early”
He said no one has a dev kit, but according to what we’ve heard that isn’t true… I don’t know, he is either butt hurt or just out of the loop. Certainly doesn’t sound great
This is the type of guy that leak info and ruins a lot of plans… If this is true. Nintendo has to put the devs kits on trusted hands.. This guy is obviously not one of them.
I like how he’s so sure it’s coming out in 2016. Don’t be assuming things you don’t know. If it’s coming in 2017 then it’s no big deal that you don’t have a dev kit. Still have plenty of time.
Yeah, that’s true. I was thinking the same thing. He’s saying it as if it’s official.
A shame. Every studio remotely interested should be able to get a dev kit, especially if we’re talking about talented studios like Moon Studios.
No, its like saying you should get one because you want to make a game for the NX. If you havent even tried getting a dev kit for the wii u or 3DS, really?
If Nintendo wants the NX to do better than Wii U, it’d be downright stupid of them to shun those that didn’t help the Wii U since Nintendo is barely doing anything to help the Wii U themselves.
I know man, but still, it doesn’t mean that every Indie has a good game, and of course they must have some kind of Filter, and a Phase inclusion for all Developers and it will be on their own times…
Yeah, I am of the opinion that you should get any dev kit you wanted, given that you undergo the bureaucracy and sign the required NDAs. Or do you think there’s such a thing as bad support?

I really don’t want to see old games on the NX at launch. I want to see new stuff!
If you really want to release it for the NX, then it better come with new features!
If the NX ends up being another Wii U… *sigh* Nintendo might have millions of dollars but that doesn’t mean shit if their reputation is tarnished beyond repair & no one buys their games & consoles. The money in the bank can only keep them afloat for so long before even that runs dry since the money they are making in return is not more than what they are spending.
Say they spend 500 million on developing games & consoles then shipping out said games & consoles but they only make back 250 million or even less than that. That’s fucking bad as you’ve just lost 250 million bucks right there as you aren’t making any profits whatsoever.
Thats what sony did with the ps3 and hey, it worked after a couple of years of course, its the Japanese thinking of long term profit, not a get rich quick American way
So this would line up directly with what SuperMetalDave64 said in that recent video about dev kits only going to major devs atm and the rest having to use SDKs until kits become more available. At least they’ll have guaranteed Unity and Unreal Engine 4 support, in that case.
Why would the devs who made a Microsoft exclusive Xbox One and PC exclusive….want a Nintendo Dev kit?
…to make a game on another system and other potential source of income? That hard to grasp, eh?
It’s an Microsoft exclusive Xbox One and PC exclusive? Last time i checked an exclusive game can only be found in one platform.
This is how consoles will die at some point. If it’s true what is said about how console devs don’t give out dev kits before launch. People are already ascending left and right to the PC master race, this makes it easier for all peasants to ascend. Kappa
