Fire Emblem Fates Early Sales ‘Far Outpace’ Fire Emblem Awakening

The latest installments of Fire Emblem are performing better than any other entry in the series right out of the gate in the U.S. Nintendo has confirmed that early sales for Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest have “far outpaced” 2013’s Fire Emblem Awakening, which is also a Nintendo 3DS exclusive. The recently-released duo of games totaled nearly 400,000 combined units sold in less than two weeks. Nintendo’s official statement on the matter can be read below:

“February was a fantastic month for Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, the newest entries in the critically acclaimed strategy RPG series from Nintendo. The games took two top-10 spots on the best-sellers list from the NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales. In little more than a week, the two versions of Fire Emblem Fates totaled nearly 400,000 combined units sold, including physical and digital versions. This far outpaces 2013’s Fire Emblem Awakening game, the series’ previous record-holder in the United States, and is a testament to both the longstanding popularity and rapidly growing fan base of the franchise.

“Momentum should continue with today’s release of Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, a digital-only third version of the game available for purchase to anyone who owns either Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright or Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. Fans have weekly DLC to look forward to purchasing, as well.”

  1. That is what usually happens the series was never extremely popular but now it is gaining traction and has a growing fan base and more people have played the games and smash Bros so when another game comes out and if it is advertised enough the sales should definitely increase

Good but you must reconsider that sometime down the line. You should fucking add my 3ds fc so I can fuck destroy you into Oblivion. Let’s if you’re an actual fucking commander or not.

    1. You never played Fates if you think it’s worse than Awakening in every way.

It’s got better characters, far better map design, better music, and overall better presentation. Awakening almost looks ancient compared to Fates.

    2. To each their own. Personally, PoR is still my favorite, whereas I feel TSS & Awakening are the worst. Shadow Dragon, well, it was dated, so in that context, I’ll not fault it for being so simplistic & easy. I started w/ FE GBA, but yeah, PoR as yet beats all imo. RD was nice & challenging, too (I especially enjoyed having dual contingents & a split story).

Anyway, seems my issues are w/ non-campaign battles & DLC as they far too easily kill the balance (& allow me to kill my enemies far too easily as well); whether in FE or another title. Also, tedium sets in for me after getting addicted to leveling up, ruining both the campaign maps & story. An army of war gods is awesome for a time, but eventually I tired long before the final battle.

I also have both Fates (B & C [physical whenever possible & reasonably priced; damn Limited, er “Special” Edition]). Yet it’ll likely be a while before I get around to them due to a gaming backlog (& I’ll likely spread each Fate out anyway, or risk burning out). So I’ll reserve my critique on Fates. But, I plan to download the free DLC for B(eginner), & download Revelation on C(onventional), steering clear of the other DLC, & hopefully preventing myself from succumbing to franchise fatigue.

Oh, & bonuses for having all Fates linked be damned!

        1. “Would you rank RD above FEGBA? I’m currently on chapter 21, and I’m liking it more than RD.”

That’s a tough question, partly because it’s been so long since I played either 1. But then there’s the biased favor I have w/ FE GBA: it was my introduction to the franchise, & its challenging nature was, @ the time, quite engaging (& I’m sure holds up to this day, though I’ve gained much more gaming EXP since).

As for RD, it’s fresher in my mind, & I prefer home-console SRPGs. Also, RD’s a solid sequel to my favorite FE. & managing 2 groups, switching back & forth between them & their stories, was interesting & fun.

Hm… I guess for me, challenge is the most important aspect (of any game), so…

I’ll rank FE GBA above RD.

Plus, I liked FE GBA’s last map & final boss more (no spoilers). & maybe RD was too much like PoR.

          1. Yeah, so far so good. I agree with pretty much everything you said about RD. I can tell RD was more challening than FE7 (at least if you play Lyn’s chapters), but the difficulty curve on 7 is much more satisfying. I didn’t expect this one to be this great, I dropped it around chapter 18 years ago.

            1. Heh, I was ashamed to admit this, but I also, uh, had taken a long break from FE 7. Walking in the Light blinded me, & enraged me (rage-quitter!). Of course, ensuring all my units survived (& *cough* resetting *cough* the map) made it that much harder to endure. But I was quite proud of myself when I did finally finish FE 7, w/ all units surviving (resetting? Never heard of that before). Now I’m tempted to go back & try to beat the final boss in Valkyrie Profile: CotP (you masochist).

Screwing up was so frustrating, yet victory was so very satisfying. I’m hoping Conquest will @ least be worthy enough to rest on the same altar as 7, PoR, & RD.

              1. I usually reset in my first walkthrough because I want to see every character’s ending, and I don’t like the possibility of having to restart my game if I screw up hardcore. Permadeath is great for replayability, but not so much for a first playthrough for me.

That said, I don’t like the ‘no death mode’ either. Way too easy. Losing my progress in a chapter when I mess uo is the minimal punishment I’m willing to accept.

        1. No prob.

I really hope IS gets the opportunity, & soon of course. I just hope if they do, it won’t follow down the path that the Paper Mario franchise has been going down lately. But I must admit, Color Splash has my attention, though I’ll likely never consider it a true PM.

& quite frankly, I was turned off by Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. But if recent FE is any indication, I think they could make a good to great Advance Wars again.

          1. I don’t know about that. AW, due to not having customization elements such as equipment or levels, is much more dependent on map design and unit balancing, something FE can half-ass to an extent without becoming a bad game in the process. It’s probably harder for them to make a good AW than a good FE, ironically enough.

        1. So if the maps were harder and no support boost were the games harder? I’m considering FE Conquest, and I wanna be sure that the game’s hard and really makes me think.

          1. It will, don’t worry about that. If you’re still on the fence about it, try some older titles before you decide to buy it. FE6 (Binding Blade) is not too dated, and it’s definitely the hardest of the GBA titles. It emulates easily too. You’ll need to patch the Japanese game into English though, since it never left Japan.

            1. Thanks for the info. Since Conquest is tough anyway it seems, the 3D fights are a + for me, so I guess I’ll go with that. Also 1 last thing, does the hardest option make you restart a whole chapter (or something like that) like in Awakening?

  2. I really didn’t like Fire emblem awakening… i got stuck in a part cuz i didn’t understand how to use these characters. But in fates i’m in chapter 19 now, Fates is so fun and it got so much better characters. Camilia ^_^ >3 hehe.

  4. That’s good to hear since it means Awakening will not be the last time I buy a Fire Emblem game. Fates can still suck it, though. I refuse to buy any of it & am sticking to my guns. I’ll wait for the next Fire Emblem game. Unless that gets censored, too. Hopefully region lock won’t be an issue for the next Nintendo systems, though, so I can evade NoA’s bullshit by importing from either the UK or Japan. Since I could download the french, german, etc versions of Pokemon Red, Blue/Green, Yellow onto my n3DS from the eShop if I wanted to, I expect region locking could very well be out the window. But must keep that hope to a minimum since Nintendo seems to enjoy crushing our hopes & dreams at times.

    1. This. I also don’t like how they’re dealing with DLC, and how they’ve split the game into three to maximize profits. Now that Fates is selling extremely well I suspect that’s all going to be the norm now going forward.

      1. Hopefully the complaints about the game having 3 different paths being sold as three different but still the same games is just as noticeable to Nintendo as the rise in their bank. Otherwise, yeah. A game split into three paths is definitely going to be the norm going forward with Fire Emblem. :/
