Nintendo UK and Nintendo of America have just issued their first system update for the Nintendo 3DS.
The update adds a 3D music video by OK Go which features 3D skating, 3D snowboarding and lots of 3D nature footage. The update also apparently enhances the communication features of the Nintendo 3DS, but I couldn’t see any new functionality added to my machine.
The Nintendo 3DS software update has to be applied manually via the System Settings on the Home Menu. I was expecting the system to automatically push and publish the update when I turned the Nintendo 3DS on. Hopefully future system updates will be automatic like they are with the Nintendo Wii.
“We shot the ‘White Knuckles’ video in 2D and 3D at the same time, but until now, there hasn’t been much opportunity for people to see the 3D version. I’m fired up for people to watch the video again with Nintendo 3DS and experience it in a whole new way. This opens up all kinds of creative opportunities.”
– Trish Sie, the video’s Grammy-winning director
Press Release

Maybe they’ll prompt an automatic update from the 25th?
They may do. I just found it strange as with other gaming systems you’re notified upon turning on the system that there’s an update available for you to download. Hopefully future updates will be automatic.
Yeah me too. I thought it was gonna be an automatic update. But the video was pretty cool. On a side note, I think the system has to be connected to the charger when doing a system update. Because I tried updating without the charger and it gave me an error. Your thoughts?
My Nintendo 3DS wasn’t docked or charging when I performed the update and it worked fine : ) May have just been the influx of people downloading it that threw up the error for you. Nice video. I’d really love Nintendo to push out more 3D video content. Especially extreme sports footage.
NO! No automatic downloads, that will be detrimental to future Homebrew!
Homebrew will be hard to get on 3DS. I’ve heard that Big N put a system that destroys the main system of the 3DS if it detcts a hack or a linker… :( Or genius hackers will have a hard time stopping this with some new stuff
That was just a threat by Nintendo. I don’t think anyone has confirmed whether it’s true or not
This update problem turns that feature on so they can crash your firmware when hacking is identified via enhancing of communications
Actually, the lack of a mandatory, automatic upadate will be quite benefical to homebew, not detrimental.
Wow. There’s already been a firmware update and the console isn’t even out yet?! Amazing. :P
Soooo. i hope they add some more stuff. I personnaly hope the block all the hacking and action replay, i mean yea its fun but annoying when someone elso does it. I did like it when i played offline (it helped me out with mario kart the challenge missions way to much, i unlocked the 7th mission or 9th whichever) but they should block it if playing world wide or something. *SORRY FOR LONG COMMENT*
I hate having to wait till teh end of next month for teh next system update. hope teh internet channel iz free for us
The update took forever for me and all i got was a minuet and 22 second video, they could of just given us that on the may update.
I get the following message when trying to update:
“an error has occurred.
unable to update.
the system will now be restarted.”
I know my internet works fine with the 3DS since I’ve played SFIV online before, and added a friend via internet. The only feature that doesn’t work with the internet is the system update. Any suggestions?
I’m not entirely sure why you’re getting that message. There could be a problem with the download server.
when will it be available??
