Nintendo Wii U: Smash Bros For Wii U And Nintendo 3DS Details Announced

Project Sora director Masahiro Sakurai discusses all things Smash Brothers during the latest segment of the popular Iwata Asks.

As I’m sure the majority of you are aware the game is coming to both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. A lot of questions about the game remain unanswered though, especially the way that the two games will interact with each other. Anyway, here’s some of Sakura’s thoughts and musings regarding the highly anticipated game.

  • Internal talk about creating a new Smash Bros. first started a bit after the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii in 2008.
  • This was about the time Nintendo first asked Sakurai to make a 3DS game. Iwata realized that fans would want a new Smash Bros. for the 3DS, but he was unsure if it would be okay to ask Sakurai to make another Smash Bros. immediately following Brawl.
  • When Iwata first mentioned the development of Wii U to Sakurai, it seems that Sakurai immediately realized that they’d need to make Smash Bros. for both platforms.
  • Iwata had actually intended to ask him if he’d like to make the game for 3DS or for Wii U.
  • Sakurai had actually begun thinking about what he’d do with the next Smash Bros. while he worked on Kid Icarus.
  • He felt that it would be wrong to make a mere extension of Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He did not feel that it would be right to just increase the volume, adding 50 characters or doubling the stages for instance.
  • He also felt it would be wrong to just improve the visuals. This is why he felt that selecting to make the game for the console just because it would have greater performance would be wrong.
  • Making a portable version had its appeal for him, as they’d be able to do a number of new things. At the same time, there would be limits, as they’d be handicapped in some areas when it comes to offering the usual enjoyment areas of Smash Bros.
  • Specifically, Sakurai feels that a portable system makes the game a more “individual” experience in that, compared to a console, it’s easier to make players attached to the data that they’ve built up and collected. The fact that you’re carrying the hardware with you makes for a more personal experience.
  • The difficulty here is that the current Smash Bros. games haven’t relied on rewards, collecting money or raising your character’s level. There’s no element of gaining experience to make your character stronger, Iwata noted.
  • Adding the notion of experience would pose a dilmena, explained Sakurai, as there are some players who would get into such a game, while others would not like it. Iwata added that placing a focus on experience would also make the game lose its instant play quality.
  • What Sakurai hopes to do is have the 3DS version of Smash Bros. allow players to build up their character through battle and rewards, then take their custom character to the Wii U version to face off against everyone. He feels it could be nice if they can make the “personal” portable space and the stadium-like “public” console space mesh together.
  • Iwata summed it the basic idea nicely: players would spend time on the 3DS version, building up their character and collecting stuff, then show off their skills on the Wii U version.
  • Sakurai noted that as the Wii U is an HD system, this version could offer 60 frames per second visuals, high quality graphics, dynamic effects, and smooth character movements.
  • While it is important to have both versions of the game be enjoyable on their own, Sakurai feels that connectivity between the two versions will make the experience even more enjoyable.
  • Closing off the little section offering vague hints about the new Smash Bros. games, Sakurai said that his aim with the 3DS version is to offer players a slightly
  • different experience from conventional Smash Bros. games. He believes that there is merit in having skilled and unskilled players play together, so one emphasis will be on elements of players helping one-another.

  1. Not sure how I feel about this. I loved the fact that every match started with a clean slate. When experience points are involved, that goes away. Maybe the experience system will be in addition to traditional Smash Bros. gameplay and all will be well. I can’t help but think of Pokemon. I never play online because so many people EV train and whatnot to make their creatures freakishly strong. I don’t have that kind of time, so battling just anyone is fun. Smash Bros. has always been perfect in that regard. I would be surprised if Nintendo messed it up (that’s very unlike Nintendo, after all. They know better than anyone. Just look at Wind Waker), but what was said he kinda scares me.

    1. You have to understand- in the details listed, Iwata and Sakurai said that they do not like the idea of an experience-based system since it would take away from the traditional game-play of the series. Also, the only thing that could potentially disappoint on the 3DS version is the cutback on some of the stages/features.

  2. Also, I wish someone would tell him that it would be completely acceptable to just add new characters, stages, effects, and enhanced visuals. Haha. More of what makes Smash Bros. Smash Bros. cannot be a bad thing at all.

    1. YES! I don’t know what was going on in hid head, because that is what we need! They must continue the Melee competitive game play that died years ago!

  3. The picture isn’t ligit, it’s just a make up of characters that COULD be in the next game, although I doubt any 3rd part character in the picture could be placed in the next Smash Bros Roster. Maybe other than Megaman.

  4. I don’t like the idea of experience, it’d make multiplayer less fair. I don’t like the 3DS- Wii U connectivity either, because if you have only one of the two console, you’ll always feel like your game is incomplete :|

  5. As I’ve said before, the create-a-character idea would be a good legit way to make personalized Miis become fighters. That being said, I hope Sakurai doesn’t deviate TOO MUCH from what made Smash Bros. good. I still want every feature from Brawl minus the Masterpieces, the Stickers, and the laggy online to make it into the next game in more improved form. Hell, there’s a lot of stuff I want to see in the next game but that’s a discussion for another time.

  6. It would be awesome if they added the hole Nintendo universe in the game meaning every one they have 25 GB of disc space so they better put 70+ characters

  8. This is a dumb idea, and this isn’t what Smash Bros. is for. Gaining experience? Come on, this isn’t an RPG man. They really need to start over, and throw this one in the trash.

    1. That’s exactly what I think… which is unfortunate because I think this is the game I was anticipating most for the new console. What I want in a new Smash Bros. IS more characters and stages! If Geno ain’t in this one, I’m gon’ be pissed yo.

  9. I would be really happy if they announced Smash Bros 3D (remake from 64) for the 3ds , but instead announced a new game… and that made me so glad…. but then… experience points, I hate experience points, and also connectivity, if it”s like buying pokemon battle revolution without the ds versions… damn… I won’t buy the game…

  10. Hey people relax, nintendo always scare us with their new ideas but at the end of the day they handle it all really well. Don’t buy 3ds version as simple as that, or buy it but only play instant play, they will offer both options im sure.

  11. They could just have a mode that would feature your leveled up characters and a regular brawl mode. easy as pie

  12. It is 100% fake. They would never put Master Hand as a PC, Funky is the same pic as Donkey, they would never put in Crash Bandicoot; Spyro; or Banjo&Kazooie, most of the quality of the pics don’t match, and they would not use the same pics FROM brawl anyway!

  13. Mario Kart 3DS is running at 60 fps…why can’t Smash Bros. 3D? It would mean there’s not such a noticeable difference graphically between the two.

  18. Hopefully this means that the 3DS version will be the weird one and the Wii U version will be mostly normal if you aren’t linking it up with a 3DS.

Also, they should let us vote on a couple of new characters to be added to the game. Because when I saw Banjo-Kazooie in that mock-up above I realized how awesome it’d be to have them. And then it made me think it’d be cool if some of the characters from Diddy-Kong Racing for N64 were brought back. I’d also like to fight as Toad, or maybe a tiny army of Toads since one wouldn’t be super useful. Regardless though, they need to let the fans pick a few!

  19. …there are too many DK characters and from each videogame… they should be more original and staying with the idea of Nintendo Characters… they messed up with Snake and Sonic but still they are cool… and connecting the 3DS into the Wii U that will be awesome….!!!

  20. This is almost certainly fake, there are too many characters from other companies on it. Although there was an announcement that a Capcom character might be in (probably Megaman), I highly doubt that Spyro is in it.
And certainly not RATCHET AND CLANK, Sony would never allow that. Ever.

  21. That sounds great. I don’t want to buy the same game twice. I want to be able to brawl independently and then show off. This is exactly the type of game network I want. I can’t wait to hear more about it.

  22. I Really Think They Should Take The Approach Of Having Downloadable Characters, so instead of having to wait years for fresh gameplay possibly every month or two a new stage or character is released. That would be fun :D

  23. Guys, I just got official comformation from Sakurai. Cole Mcgrath and Barney are in the GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. My personal opinion is that, they have already made a game for newcomers and beginners to perticipate in. I don’t see what is the need to add the same brawl engine, for example a hardcore game where you can destroy your foes silly and has tactics of skill and movement thats where melee comes in, brawl didnt really have those things and it was not appealing to the advance players like myself.
