Nintendo of America has told online publication Joystiq that the recently announced Nintendo Video for the Nintendo 3DS will be available to American consumers sometime during the summer. Nintendo Europe and Nintendo UK will be rolling out the service to Nintendo 3DS owners tomorrow. Nintendo of America also clarified that Netflix is still on track for 3DS this summer.
“Nintendo’s short-form video service that delivers special video content for Nintendo 3DS systems will launch in North America later this summer. In addition, Netflix members who have an unlimited plan starting at $7.99 a month and access to a broadband wireless Internet connection will soon be able to download a free Netflix application that allows them to watch movies and TV shows on their Nintendo 3DS systems at no extra charge. These services will add to the wealth of games and entertainment content currently available via the Nintendo eShop. For more information about Nintendo 3DS, visit http://www.nintendo.com/3ds.”

Well…. Slight problem with downloading music. B/c the 3DS browser falls under LGPL, the source code is released to the public(Seriously, you can download it http://mediacontent.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/images/service/OpenSources.zip ), and all of the formats that the 3DS browser supports are proprietary. The only way to get both legally functioning, would be to either update the source, and make it not LGPL, or to add OGG or something open source like that to the 3DS sound player. Themes are an awesome idea, but at least on wii, the home brew themes were a nightmare, practically requiring that you installed Bootmii, as it disabled priiloader. Themes really wouldnt do much in any event, other than changing the backround of the main menu and such.

Good to know. It’s only 2D Netflix at the moment, but I’m glad we’ll be getting the 3D Videos service this summer as well. Now they just need to localize the flare red 3DS. Maybe launch it alongside Star Fox 64 3D?
