Toshihiro Nagoshi: Yakuza Is ‘An Experiment’ On Wii U

yakuza 1 and 2 wii uThe previous Japanese Nintendo Direct gave us hope that Yakuza 1 & 2 HD might see the light of day in the West after it was announced for the Wii U in Japan, but Sega’s chief creative officer Toshihiro Nagoshi says it is better described as ‘an experiment’ to gauge people’s reactions.

In an interview – which can be seen here – the Yakuza producer was asked a series of questions pertaining to the release of the series, due out in Japan August 8, and whether we’d see it, eventually, come to the Nintendo 3DS. Here’s what Nagoshi had to say, published by Kotaku:

“To be honest, we’re not aiming to see if the game will be a smash hit. Our real intention is that we want to see how people respond. The existing [Wii U] users are different [from PlayStation owners], so isn’t it hard to say if it makes sense? It isn’t jumping ship to Nintendo hardware –  Yakuza 1 & 2 are coming out on the Wii U, and this is what it is.

“[A 3DS version] is not possible. I’d do it if it were okay to have a Yakuza game without many people walking around the city… But it would be forcing it, no?”

  1. I really hope this comes to the UK someday. I love Yakuza’s 3 and 4, and was planning on buy HD collection for my PS3, but I would much rather take advantage of the Wii U version’s features.

    1. To me, the PS3 games are great; even better than 1 and 2. Unfortunately, we haven’t had a chance to play 5 which has received higher review scores and better accolades than the rest of the series.

      Localize it!

      1. I tried to play 3 or 4, i cant remember which, and i just couldn’t get into it.
I was more interested in watching my friend play it, being the one who got me into the series, but i just didnt get into the last 2.

    1. Xbox Done, that is a good one Nintendo commander. Only microsoft has the ability to take 359 steps backwards. It took them, in the xbox360 generation 7 years to make those 360 steps of selling 2 to 5 console replacement RROD disk scratching machines to their average users. In the first 4 years of the consoles existence. Then selling xboxlive to their consumers, after their consumers already paying for Internet connections. Meaning xboxlive users pay for netflix twice lol. Back to the topic that matters :

      1) Our ranks are being beefed up by our former childhood nemesis cousins SEGANS.
      2) Microsoft our new third party has added ammunition by literally giving “US” padawns that shall need coaching and mentoring on how real games are played. Xenoblade might be too much, let us introduce their COD burnt braincells to some Yoshi Yarn Porridge first.

      3) Sonyans are now buying the Wii U in droves, and one game announcement coming this e3 shall make a lot of them return home to nintendo :).

        Yoshi Yarn Porridge?…
        Uhmm ok…

But indeed, our former rivals are now becoming one of our closest allies to battle the remaining threat of the Xbots…

Yes these misguided Xbots must be reintroduced to real games with honest fun and a solid community…

However, as for their betrayal these former units will not have the option of moving up in ranks for 5 years…

  2. OPERATION RAINFALL season has returned. Let our whiny but enthusiast branch of nintendo gamers ( with a mixture of on the fence Sony drones, xbots, PC orcs, iOS goblins, tablet football moms and linux metros.) start a petition for at the very least a Wii U e-shop Yakuza 1 and 2 PAL and NTSC region release and localization. In fact how can the tweet Japanese Wii U owners to buy this game in droves. Our getting these games relies on them buying this in addition to their buying of games like dance grand master super duper hero savior warrior on the original Wii.

    1. This is SEGA their salaries are now basically and quintencentially being paid by nintendo. Nintendo paid for Aliens colonial marines, which gearbox goofed up. Thus now SEGA is all but owned by Nintendo. These little speeches their board are making are for their investors. In the course of two years, SEGA will be an official nintendo first party studio. Also I can guarantee you that nintendo as their 100 % parent company shall release a Nintendo-SEGA third console tablet in Japan only, that shall double as a Wii U controller in 3 years. Nintendo is paying as publishers their salaries and R and D for bayonetta 2. That is not even part of the 7 to 9 game Nintendo SEGA exclusive games deal. Bumblebees and lady bugs what an amazing workmanship I see.

Let’s see if High Command manages to persuede the Segan Leaders to submit themselves into the holy N and be a part of our Command as a reward…

Then we will have the most influential character in the gaming universe, Mario, with the addition of Sonic, another universally known character that or Empire will make even better…

        1. Yes Nintendo Commander. Most people missed the significance of nintendo getting three exclusive sonic games on the Wii U and 3DS. You are correct, high command needs to establish this purchase real soon.

      2. That would mean that Nintendo would have to support SEGA’s established games and franchises on PC, PlayStation, and mobile – which isn’t going to happen any time soon. SEGA is currently working on projects that are PlayStation and PC exclusive. They have invested quite a bit in mobile, and Microsoft, although their future is uncertain, is also home to SEGA games.

I can agree that SEGA might eventually become a Nintendo property if things keep progressing the way that they do, but it will not happen any time soon; Definitely not in the next two years.

I would rephrase that statement to Madden being a mockery to the Wii U than an “Experiment”…

    3. cheap shot. that game was a port of madden 12 with gamepad controls. had they released madden13with gamepad controls more ppl would have been willing to buy it. not to mention with only four million consoles out at the time how many copies did they need to sell to be happy. I bought madden u to support the effort with the thought madden 14 would come to wii u as a complete game.

  3. Ah yes, back to “experiments”, are we? Feels like we’re back in….2006. Now all we need is a Yakuza gun game…

And to think, I got Yakuza 1 for the PS2 a couple months ago. It’s kind of surreal, to be honest… seeing Yakuza 1 and 2 getting a release on a Nintendo platform, considering Yakuza has always been a Sony exclusive. It’s nice to see it happening, though. If Yakuza is a success on the Wii U (it better fucking be! Don’t fail us, other Nintendo fans!) then I hope to see the other games in the Yakuza series make their way to the Wii U.

    1. never played it but would definitely get it to support Wii U. I am buying all Ubi games and the deus ex game for it this yr too. We need these games to sell.
