Nintendo of Japan is hosting a special promotion where consumers can purchase digital titles much cheaper than the retail versions. For a limited time only, Japanese home console owners can purchase upcoming Wii U titles such as Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101 and LEGO City Undercover for a discounted price. In order to nab the chance, though, you must purchase the titles in their launch week to get the nifty 10% off at the eShop checkout.
Currently, it’s unknown as to whether this special promotion will follow through to the West, but it would certainly be an extra incentive to purchase the digital version. Would you be happier to purchase digital content from the eShop if this promotion was included? Let us know in the comments below.
Nice Idea! Hope it comes over to other countries soon!
Yup, so do I. 💋
Basically, just buy the disc online at Amazon or somewhere and you get at least at least a 15% discount… This is why I’m starting to hate downloadable games, they never go down in price or go on clearance.
First
Shut up jerry
At 10% off I would, saves me from going in that world outside lol
“Would you be happier to purchase digital content from the eShop if this promotion was included?”
Absolutely not, i will buy physical copy only. i have a lot of retro console and games in my list to buy. if i will stop to buy next-gen because of the digital, i will focus my money there.
Well this will certainly raise the Wii U sales a bit and its game sales aswell…
But personally, I do prefer a physical copy, always…
Not sure it will raise prices much, psn gives discounts dirt cheap with ps plus purchase, 2 month old games cost about 10-20$. But this is a step foward.
id like to sex u up!

I hope. It’s lame how the dl games never drop substantially in price for Nintendo. I’ve been buying all used games for my 3ds because they’re at least $20 cheaper!
3ds games are perfectly priced for me project x zone was like $35
Not really. I sell my finished games in order to fund the purchase of new ones. So it wouldn’t woo me. Plus 10% off the digital price is STILL more expensive than new games from on-line retailers.
NOT IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA LIKE ME! ONLINE PRICE AND RETAIL PRICE IS THE SAME!
Really? I guess we’re quite lucky over here.
Don’t lie. Amazon sells games way cheaper to begin with, then months later they go down even more. And that’s in AMERICA.
What I don’t get is that the price of digital content is only slightly cheaper than the hardware. Why would you download a game in nintendo shop for 40 bucks if you can get it for 45 bucks in a store, with box and manual, it’s artwork and the magnificient feeling to posess it. An other thing that lowers the lust to download is that nintendo policies see the downloadable content as part of your hardware, and if you lose it or get it stolen, you have to struggle with the company to get the games back (send them a copy of the police declaration, a copy of your identity card, …) instead of working with account logic. I’m buying the games and I submit to their way because I’m a huge fan of nintendo, but my heart gets a new scar everytime I read something about their market strategy,
What are the odds of someone’s WiiU console getting lost or stolen?
If you remember or heard about it…
Just around the launch period for the Wii U, somewhere in the US I think it was, some fools drove iin with some sort of truck and stole about 5000 Wii Us…
So in other words, there is a slight chance…
I do remember, but they were unassigned consoles. Not consoles with games people downloaded on them.
I was misty referring to your personal WiiU with downloaded games. ;)
I wish an account system was more feasible, but people would exploit it. I’ve personally had software recovered from a lost 3DS… So it IS possible. A pain in the ass? Yes. But seriously, if losing your shit happens often, that’s your own damn fault.
(Not you personally N-Com, I speak with a general”you”)
Ah yes, sorry my bad…
I think that there should be atleast some sort of receit where you can print it out and use that at retail stores somehow too…
But I agree, the risk is high for exploits…
And I also agree 100% that if you lose a game(s) or break your things more than twice then take blame for it yourself for being indifferent towards your personal things…
I myself have never lost a game or had a console broken ever since the age of the Game & Watch…
My Wii’s laser recently broke though…
But not my fault obviously…
Um… Wiis getting stolen from a shipment is completely different than a person’s Wii getting stolen from their home.
Retail downloads game should always be at least 10% cheaper if you ask me…
Agreed. At LEAST 10% off…
Steam is where this dream is reality.
I wish they did that in NA because I really want Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 and getting them cheaper would be great however I do think digital games should be cheaper in the first place
Damn Japs! Jk. I’m speaking out of spite. I’m sorry if I offended anyone.
I do not like that we can not save eShop games to our SD drive cards like I did Wii Shop games on my Wii, I currently have over 80 Wii Shop and Virtual Console games on my Wii SD card. I don’t understand why we can’t save eShop games to the SD drive cards, their is not enough memory, even with Deluxe 32 Gig to get very many downloadable retail games, they are much bigger downloads. I don’t want to buy a big separate hard drive, but currently that is what they want us to do, but why have the SD drive and not let us save to it, I hope they update this like they did for the Wii.
SD cards are very inexpensive right now and very convenient, I bought a 32 Gig on sale at best buy real cheap.
I think USB drives could be a better option than SD cards if you have lots of games? Atleast where i live 2 tera’s USB drives costs around same as 5 bigger SD-cards and there is much more space on that.
Also, I think the Wii U basic should have had at least 32 Gig because 8 Gig is a joke and the Deluxe should have had 64 Gig, Also the Wii U should have had 4 Gig RAM, it is cheap, look at the price of new laptops and they all have 6-8 Gig of RAM.
Oh yeah, that’s a great point, I’d also have to buy a hard drive to accommodate the digital download. It may be the future, but it’s not my present =).
10% to not have a physical copy which I can play on future systems with backward compatibility for free, other peoples current future systems or trade in if I choose to? No thanks. If you shop around you can do better than that discount on retail as well. During e3 I got 33% off all my pre-orders for this year for physical copies.
I’d get one of the games at least Probably Pikmin 3. I’m going to need another hard drive soon :/ 💋
I plugged a tiny, 32gig USB flash drive into the back of my WiiU (it’s almost flush, doesn’t stick out)
doubled my deluxe hard drive without adding bulky hardware.
It’s not very cost effective, but I take my WiiI with me a lot and didn’t want the added bulk of a hard drive,
And when you buy games it just adds them tothe Wii U menu from the SD card (unlike the Wii)? That sounds like a great idea, if it can do that! 💋
I’d rather see this on 3DS!
I bought an external 2TB WD drive but i’ve had it seize on me once playing the Luigi DLC. Could have been a fluke but I don’t want to pigeon hole myself!
