Nintendo 3DS Flash Cart Now Shipping

Nintendo_3ds_gloss_pink

Numerous retail outlets have started to receive the Gateway Nintendo 3DS flash cart. The company has said that it will provide an official user guide and instructional video for the device in the coming days. The Gateway 3DS solution is a set of two cartridges that is supported on Nintendo 3DS systems running firmware versions 4.1 to 4.5. First, the user runs the standard DS cartridge to run an exploit on their 3DS system, this installer makes a permanent firmware change to the 3DS. The user can then load 3DS games from the other 3DS cartridge. Clearly this is going to be a nightmare for Nintendo.

    1. I’ll clarify the stuff up, since I’ve been following this thing’s development on the GBATemp forums.

This is NOT going to be a nightmare for Nintendo. First thing, like stated, it only runs on 4.1-4.5, reason being Nintendo already blocked their exploit “by accident” since 5.1; They’re exploit based, so they can’t, and won’t, be able to make a working version for 5.1 + firmware since their exploit was fixed. Likewise, even if they crak 5.1, there’s 6.0 which is even more security packed. once this ships, expect a new 3DS Update to render this thing useless forever. New games are already forcing firmware 5.1 updates, but anything from Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and less just need 4.5, so those games can be pirated.

Plus this makes alterations to your 3DS console and nobody knows what can happen. They say you use the DS card to “prepare” you console but they never explain what prepare means. It could just brick the shit out of your 3DS.

      1. This also won’t end region locking. It works as a 1:1, and the 3DS will look for the region code inside the rom you’re booting. USA roms will only play on USA consoles and vice-versa. If you don’t want region locking, then just get the 80$ this will sell for and buy a Japanese 3DS already with a bit more money.

      2. Yeah, right: that’s what they also said about the DS and the PSP. If anything, I find that pirates are a persistent lot, and with their operations situated in places where proper distributions of original copies are pretty much neglected by the publishers (believe it or not, there are countries that doesn’t have a proper distribution line outside of America, Japan, and the EU), then I don’t a way for Nintendo to win this fight.

Unless of course they started developing a virus that only targets jailbroken 3DS, that is.

    1. With many friends of mine, we think regionlock is the biggest “fuck you, gamers” ever of this era, as there is no more ntsc/pal/secam/whatev’. i hope this will help

        1. …….did you go full retard…..
roms maybe LOCKED into a country set but with flash carts you can play them regardless. just to let you know. ANd that would be the only reason I would invest in a flashcart either to play games that will never come to my region or to try a game instead of wasting money on buying it and being disappointed. most games I have played for awhile on a flashcart I purchased cause I thought it was good (if there was not a demo for it )

          1. You went full retard there instead, the manufacturer of this card said it won’t break region locking because it’s a 1:1 cart and the roms are set to specific regions. The 3DS will check for the region code inside the ROM. Therefore you can only play USA roms on a USA console.

            1. And just to sum it up, the DS din’t have region lock, so obviously you could play roms from any region on a DS flashcard. Heck, you could even buy japanese games and play on your DS. Did you know that!?

    2. actually, this is more for smashing that region lock into a million tiny pieces.
G Generation 3D and Gundam 3D Battle, Here I come!

      1. Just to smash your expectation in a million tiny pieces, this is already confirmed to not bypass region locking, I posted the reason above. Manufacturer’s words.

    1. They already did. It only works on FW 4.1 – 4.5, while we just got 6.2. This Card got blocked even before it was announced, lol

      1. the people who created gateway intentionally made it only compatible with 4.1-4.5 so there wouldnt be a mass amount of cards being bought

        1. Intentionally because they found an exploit on 4.1-4.5 that was fixed by version 5.1, so they can’t make it work on 5.1 and on.

      1. But you see, they buy the hardware for the pirating; it gets patched, they get the new flashcard, it gets patched etc etc. Then they give up and just buy legit.

          1. The firmwares on the flashcarts themselves will also update with patches that allow them to function on latest updates. Anytime there is a computer system, there is going to be some flaw that some hacker will be able to find and exploit. All a hacker needs to do is find one hole to exploit. All Nintendo needs to do is patch all the holes…except that that’s nearly impossible.

            1. Exploits aren’t easy to find, as you imply. It is however, easy (not always) for Nintendo to patch these if they know what the exploit is. An exception I know of would be game exploits though. Those aren’t always as easy to patch, especially with the Wii.

        1. I think they’re talking about the region lock excuse that birth these pirates. Pirates have long existed for generations and either way the companies decides with its products, there’s always gonna be cheap, low ass pirated thieves.

I get region lock is probably meant to hinder pirating but at the same time, its limiting the gamer’s optional freedom. What Nintendo should do is actively have their legal forces go to the government and request them to make these Flashcards illegal in every possible retail due to promoting pirating thus hurting their business and have those people/companies behind its creations sued and destroyed.

          1. Personally I feel like High Command should release all games in digital format so those that want to play popular Japanese games can play them…

I see no reason though to go retail versions as it would be a waste of resources since most do not like those games…

I think most of our Empire’s problems is to the biased views from ignorant western gamers and media and the overly passiveness High Command seems to have sometimes…

          2. the smash brothers community would like to have a word with you.
Yes there will be Pirates and even hackers, but Homebrew CAN be a really good thing for a system. it’s partially what made Super Smash Bros Brawl the Mega-Smash Hit it was YEAAAAAARS after release and was also a large part of what kept the Wii Afloat. yea, there will always be scumbags, but the good it can do is worth it in my eyes.

          3. the DS was not region locked and pirating was rampant. why do pirates look for excuses and not just admit they’re thieves,

        2. Think about it, if the thing can brick the system if chanced, they could lose alot and I mean AAALLLOOOT of money. Nintendo doesn’t need that on their hands let alone nightmares of bricked systems. To me, if they are allowing this and they end up not only facing this, but alot of problems with keeping the income of the 3ds systems. Imagen that you got at least 1,932,500,000.00 systems sold…you end up with a good profit. Say you want to allow this new change as those units are shipped out, the product fails and you end up losing more than half which is…below the one millionth mark. You lose most of that profit. If I’m understanding this artical correctly, nintendo is facing a big problem if that happens…worse of all, they allowed it to take place. Their fault. For my sake of being a nintendo gamer for so long that I’m wrong. I wish nintendo great luck in this decision.

          1. If I remember correctly, High Command is very much aware of these issues…

They even said that the latest update we had would erase the problems with those cards…

I’m sure there are people without any internet that cannot update their system but I doubt that it is ina significant amount…

                    1. …*looks away*…nothing…just to see my original console suffer is not pleasing to me. I’ll agree to them fixing any problems, but I got that hunch. It’s nothing too serious but its a hunch that they might suffer a bit longer. I’m an fantasy, adventurer, fighter type of gamer. I feel that I have to do something to help out in some way. *looks back seriously* Mark my words commander, I will do something to help out one day. I will not stand it any longer if I get that kind of power from them. I’ve already planned my goals, if nintendo falls, so will my dream…and that is a serious “no, no” in my book.

                      1. Nintendo Commander

                        I know what you mean…

I will too try to help correct and guide their passive state if I can…

But let’s see if things change before mid 2014…

If things are still about the same around summer of 2014 then it’s time to take action and heavily bombard High Command with worrying and constructive criticism…

            1. @SnowMan I doubt Nintendo’s warranty Covers you modding the software and Bricking your console!!! so they should be safe! no warranties really cover you trying to mod your Items!

    1. A 2 cartridge solution is interesting and was unexpected.

Original DS methods were 2 cartridge solutions, But that was to trick the DS into launching DS software from GBA mode. Wonder if the trick is similar here. DS flash carts worked on the 3DS for a good long while after launch (a system update eventually blocked them, or most of them at least). So I guess the DS cartridge tricks the 3DS into thinking its in DS mode and then you can aunch games from the 3DS cart.

If the original DS is anything to go by. These types of cart will last a while, and then they’ll be combined into just the one cartridge.

Still, with the 3DS receieving constant updates, it’s now going to be the usual cat and mouse situation.

        1. I know.

But the flashcarts will also be updated.

Then the 3DS will be updated.

          Then the flashcarts.

And it’ll just go on and on and on forever and ever.

          1. And Nintendo has a whole lot more money than the people developing these flashcards. It’ll cost the latter so much that they won’t end up viable in the first place.

          2. Just pointing out that their people who make the flashcards will need an exploit to make loading roms possible. When Nintendo patches the exploit, there’s no guarantee that the hackers will find another one.

            1. Of course, we used that reasoning for Apple devices too yet each version of iOS arrives jailbroken in a matter of days or weeks (by hackers with less revenue than Apple). The probability of a hacker finding one single exploit is higher than the probability of Nintendo patching every single possible exploit on their system (And even with patching, you can only patch the holes you know about, what about the ones that you haven’t discovered yet?) Sure there is no guarantee a hacker will find another. There’s also no guarantee of a system that’s unexploitable. Nintendo did a great job holding the hackers off for a long time but in the end it’s still an endless, uphill battle.

          1. Australia is considering banning region locked consoles, so hopefully all countries follow suit and teach the fuckers a lesson.

    2. Welp, good luck, pirates. New firmware’ll be out in a while. And then a new piracy thing is devised. It’s the Circle of Life… never futile, but never ending.

    3. Same story since 1980. Oh noes! People copy our games! The industry is dying! 33 years later and they are making more money than ever.

      1. while closing down studios and doing major reorganizations and shutting down… taking less risks, focusing on DLC DRM and putting out more shovel-ware than ever before. Man the industry is in such a strong place!

        1. Well, I doubt its because of piracy and more likley because of people who put their money into companies that produce generic (in my eyes crap) types of games.
Then again, im not saying that flash carts isnt doing damage, but I dont believe its such a big deal to the industry.

    4. Wait…..so why is mynintendo reporting on this? Aren’t they supposed to be in support of Nintendo? Not advertising exploits for their systems?

      1. I can’t speak for everybody but it’s better knowing what type of trouble or problems are either getting or conducting themselves than living in Happyland forever ignorant…

    5. THEY FUCKING LOVE THEW GAMES BUT ARE NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR IT
AND THEN THEY COMPLAIN THE NEW GAMES ARE CRAPPY, AND IS BECAUSE OF THIS
GOD, I HATE ALL THIS FUCKING KIDS

        1. I’m afraid that’s impossible. Not all the 3DS’s are connected to the internet (young/old people etc.). If a update is needed legal young/old people etc. also can’t game..

            1. Indeed…

We must inform High Command via Miiverse so they can take action…

This is how North Korea will be soon…

            1. Indeed…

I want to play games but I don’t want to pay for them…

I think abortion is murder but we end thousands of lives every day…

I want to have the same status and rights as men do but we want them to do and pay things for us…

We want women to take care of us but we treat them like shit…

We want world peace and yet think our nation/religion/culture is the only right purpose…

              It’s so pathetic…

        1. I honestly blame the App Store and its terribly low price scheme for propagating this type of behavior! “$35 is too much to pay for a full game that had 100s of people create it!” Go whine somewhere else and pay the price like all the rest of us! I hate flash carts!!

          1. this behaviour was there even before the App Store(I remember kids at school playing Pokemon Red on a PC emu but they told me I was an idiot for buying it if you could get it free on the PC. I always hated that at least on the Games industry

    6. I hate pirates who think that they have some fuckin permission to get everything for free. They think that rules dont matter to them. Usually pirates are those smoke brains who cant think. They just keep on payin for their drugs and then they cant afford games. Fuckin losers.

      1. As I former Space Pirate, I know their ways and they must be obliterated completely as soon as possible, these low life Hypocritecians…

      1. When 3DS is already patched and then will be patched again soon after and Nintendo would take notice and legal actions again just like how they recently won their last pirated battle case for nearly $1 million. Nintendo should take this to the government and have them make Flashcards illegal and those companies targeted for more lawsuit and annihilation.

      1. People like you should stfu if you can’t pay choose another hobby don’t promote shit like this .
These bastards get rich and the developer doesn’t get his earned cash and in the worst case studio’s have to close .
Be happy with pirating it could be the last game from that studio you’re playing

        1. stfu clown. I’ll only pay for a game I know for a fact is worth paying for. you can waste your money all you want clown. besides this is mostly for full demo purposes and flashcarts can be very useful too.

            1. how about this. you continue to waste your money and I’ll continue to not waste my money. you got that useless clown.

    7. I don’t get. These hackers like Nintendo and their games right? Why would they do this then? As much I’d like to get free games (since I usually can’t afford them) I would rather support my favorite gaming company by buying their games.

      1. So you can carry all your games on one cart, play SNES, PSone ect. Plus i’d like to see what can be done with the system, maybe we’ll get a browser that plays youtube

      2. It wasn’t a “hacker”, duh. It was a manufacturing company. They only want the money. They developed this under secret, nobody knows how it works. They did 3DS because it’s the hottest console this generation, selling a lot and all.

    8. I hope Nintendo just sticks to making games and not worry about this.

Especially if someone were to use this for backup purposes. Still kind of pissed about that Japan report though. But some people will just get free games, yet some people just only do it to try it out, then buy, or if they already own the game too.

Oh btw, if anyone blames “piracy” for DRM, that’s the game company fault. That’s just like blaming gays for hate instead of blaming the real target because they had a choice to stop, like my first sentence.

    9. It’s only a matter of time before somebody finds a way to jailbreak their 3ds and/or Wii U and remove the region locks themselves.

    10. Only for 4.X dang it! Not that I would download 3DS games, my conscience would not allow that, but I would love to play n64 games on my 3DS eventually.

    11. It’s a start but the only games I would want to play with a flashcard are region locked games, and they already said their flashcard can’t do that. Plus every new game that came out since Luigis Mansion requires a higher patch than the flashcard needs. So all it is, is an expensive way to play older 3ds games, that you can pick up second hand now for not very much.

    12. Crappy cart that’s already blocked posing as a “region free” advocate device. Nothing but scumbag pirates. If this really were about “region free” then the device would allow you to plug in a 3DS game, like the action replays, not a micro SD card.

The only reason DS flash carts were able to exist and they had any form of legitimacy was because they were promoted as “homebrew devices” this gateway card is 100% piracy. Plain and simple.
