Sakurai Is Working On Smash Bros Hitboxes And Damage Rates All By Himself

Famed Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai has explained to Polygon that he has personally been entering in all the data for fighter skills and hitboxes for the forthcoming entry on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Sakurai says he has tried giving this task to other people on the team, but he doesn’t feel it has always worked out. Sakurai clearly says that he doesn’t want to ship an incomplete game so it ultimately results in a huge workload for himself.

“In all previous Smash Bros. games, I’ve entered in all the data for fighter skills and hitboxes by myself, and it’s quite nearly that way with this game too. I’ve thought about leaving this work to others and I’ve actually tried it once or twice, but it hasn’t worked out. I don’t want to release an incomplete game, and I want everything to be as successful as possible, but it results in a massive amount of work for me. It’s a big problem, but there are reasons for doing it this way.  Characters’ in-game balance and features are something that I’m thinking about from the start while coming up with motions. If I left that to someone else midway, that’d make things more difficult. It’s faster and more accurate to just input the numbers myself than try to explain it in words to somebody.”

      1. No hes right… Sakurai is extremely committed to this game, but hit box an damage ratio ALL BY HIMSELF?! Dude! Thats a ridiculous workload. Remember his injury? Im sure hes still recovering from it.

    1. Really? :/ Demise?
He was in the game for like 5 minutes.
What about Little Mac, or Wonder Red, or Bayonetta, or Chrom, Dark Samus, hell, i think everyone would prefer Groose over Demise any day.

    2. NO WE NEED MORE MARIO CHARACTERS!!!! THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH!!! Bob-ombs, Mallow, Hammer Bro, Geno, Piranha Plant, all the Bowser gang, omg we could just fill it up with them ALL!

On a serious note, I wish we had more representation across games. Look what adding Ness did for the popularity of Earthbound. Only 2 or 3 characters from a franchise please… even then it is pushing it.

  1. Lol none of you scrubs here know about this stuff, you only know about 4 player item match XD. Anyway cool to know hopefully no one gets a bs invisible HB

      1. That wasn’t my point and @lazy im pretty sure I do since I studied the mechanics of this game and play it competitively

        1. what was your point? “i play this pro competetively so i understand this kind of shit?” showing off?, my point remains, it doesn’t matter how the fuck you play the game, ALL players are affected by demage rates and hit boxes

            1. You think your sooooo smart don’t cha nerd? Well just cuz you’ve wasted 5 years playing this game in your sleep doesn’t mean your not a worthless sony pony. Cuz spoiler alert, you are. Human garbage. Go play with your brick nerd

            2. that was your point stop playing naive, and why i am butthurt?, because of you degorative way of talking about the other users of the game(you scrubs), “omg that sucker doesn’t play final destination no items stock fox only, he is such a noob lololololol” nobody fucking cares if you play pro or not (:

                1. None of you guys here know respect Tho -_- when you say something negative about Nintendo you get cursed out lol and that wasn’t my point man stop assuming and getting so butthurt lol

  2. Because that worked out so well for Brawl.
I was actually having hope for the game to be balanced, with Namco helping out and all. Oh well.

      1. Damn scrubs. He’s saying that Sakurai worked on all of that himself in brawl and brawl was unbalanced in ALOT of areas more than a normal fighting game (which is true) so there’s a chance the new smash will have the same result

        1. True, but then again it’s possible that Sakurai learned from his mistake and will make this game more balanced this time around. it’ll be hard to tell at this point, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see the results.

        2. Okay, mr. Expert, in what areas was Brawl massively unbalanced? As far as I’m concerned, it’s a hell of a lot more balanced than Melee.

          1. Just SOME examples of massively unbalanced- infinite chain grabs (ddd, ice climbers) snakes F-tilt was overpowered and had too much range. Meta knight has no lag on all his good attacks and has no bad match ups. I can go on all day with how the game was unbalanced.

  3. That is one guy really caring about his fans!

Got a Link Between Worlds in the mail today, awesome game! But it looks like I won’t get the Zelda 3DS XL before Saturday…

      1. I got the physical copy in the mail, but for some reason, they didn’t send it with Assassin’s Creed IV and the Zelda 3DS XL bundle… hoping I get the bundle tomorrow, but my tracking service says saturday…

        1. So bored, that this is what you do with your time? *cue the “WELL AT LEAST I DONT (insert don’t reference here) you (insert bad comeback here)”*

      1. Sites getting pretty good! I like it ATM, but I can also say there wasn’t one Change that I disliked this week.
        Maybe I’m just passive…
All I know is all the layouts are nicer then the ps4’s ui

  4. Unsung heroes down at Nintendo.

While what are they doing at sony headquarters, knack and playstation all stars! Haha garbage, pure garbage, as pure as you can get.
Mark Cerny should be ashamed of himself,
And if he’s reading this, it’s not to late to jump ship!

Leave sony to sink. Buy an xbox or something

    1. K well allow me to start fresh.
YOUR A PONY! A WORTHLESS PIECE OF HORSE GARBAGE! YOU SHOULD BE TAKEN BEHIND THE BARN AND SHOT! GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SUPERIORITY COMPLEX! I HOPE YOU BREAK A LEG, LITERALLY! SO FARMER BROWN CAN TAKE YOU OUT BACK AND SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE.

      Go play some knack faggot

      1. And Knack looks amazing tbh, and who can deny wanting to get a PS4 just for Star Wars Battlefront 3 and Kingdom Hearts 3 haha

  5. Major props to Sakurai. But man. With his history of health issues and such, he needs to take it easy. I’m glad he’s really dedicated to his work, but I can deal with a little delay so he can slow down a bit. Needless to say I’ll be buying both versions.

      1. Carpal tunnel or something similar on his wrists, because the crazy motherfucker plays Kid Icarus on 9.0 intensity for month and Smash using 2 controllers.

  6. Words cannot begin to describe how eager I am to have this game, holy frickin’ batman it looks cool!

Weird, but, am I the only one who wishes we had a wii u exclusive Soul Calibur?

  7. Jesus Christ Sakurai…

So is Smash basically going to die when he does? Obviously, a long way away but still.

Honestly, anyone think, and don’t be a fucking fanboy, that Smash and Nintendo could go for a similar form of releasing the game as Killer Instinct has?
So just releasing the game now, with the main bunch, for a small price, like £15, then over time adding stuff in Seasons. Im sure nobody at all would mind play Smash now, and it keeps the game fresh, and as a platform than just a game.
The strain of just getting it done fast must be brutal, but i worry they’ll cut somethings out due to time constraints.

Also, if anyone is wondering, i do have Killer Instinct, and it’s fucking AWESOME

      1. I hated it when it had all its DRM shit , but at the end of the day…its a box. Games matter to me, and KI is awesome

    1. would love to try ki.

I don’t think that’s possible for smash bros as they already need the game to be almost ready to even release it with few characters, otherwise they’d release an unfinished game and Nintendo would never allow.

      1. Well thats what i mean, have all the original characters, or a good number of 10-15, and add everything else gradually.

It saves more room for tweaking, and balancing, and making every character unique.
Same with KI, alot of people are annoyed it has only 8 characters so far, 6 available now, and 2 later, Spinal in January, and Fulgore (YES) in March. But i like that. It’s clear that it was designed that was due to short development time, and the desire to have it out on launch day, but it works out being more interesting. It stop the whole problem of multiple versions of 1 game, all at full retail. 2-3 years from now, KI could have 24 characters, and new stages and you still only spent £50/$60, and every character is balanced and had time spent on it, and between that any issues have been fixed in a flash. Id love to have Smash released now with the original 8, because the game is just fun. And every 3-5 months, i get to look forward to new stuff.

    1. Nobody cares about story mode in any fighting game, it’s a waste of time.
It’s basically a cheap way of unlocking every character.
In fact, without it, people will spend more time playing the game with the incentive to unlock the character, therefore making them better players, making them enjoy the game more, and making the local and online versus more interesting.

      Fuck story mode.

      1. Agreed. I’ve never liked story modes from fighting games. They’re cheesy.

MvC 3 is awesome for that. No story but great fighting mechanics.
