The New York Times has run an informative piece titled Empty Shelves Signal Revival in Game Consoles. The article highlights the fact that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are currently flourishing despite naysayers previously stating that the home console industry was dying due to the influx of tablets and smartphones. But the article also points out that the Wii U is seriously under performing compared to both next gen consoles. The publication interviewed Reggie Fils-Aime who simply told The New York Times that “Our business is doing just fine, thank you very much, despite the competitive launches.”
“It has been really amazing how disappointing it has been,” David Cole, an analyst at DFC Intelligence.
“They clearly need to take a real hard look at themselves and what they did,”
In a recent interview, Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo’s United States division, said he expected sales of the Wii U to improve as better games for the device went on sale.
“Our business is doing just fine, thank you very much, despite the competitive launches,” he said.

Yep they are! Maintained it at 200k+ for every week since ps4 and Xone launched, before mario 3d land, WWHD and Pikmin 3 they’d only sell around 50k per week so they’re doing good now! The question is will this keep going up until way after the holidays, because they need to put up those numers for a while before people start taking notice

Unfortunately for the Wii U, I start to think that the console won’t sell good. Smash and MK8 are coming, and then it’s pretty much it honestly, gamers won’t buy a Wii U for those games. Bayonetta 2 maybe; but it won’t make millions. PS4 and Xbone are still going strong, their are tons of so-called “gamers” buying them, regardless of the lack of games.

Gamers lots their faith in Nintendo. They respect them because they learnt how to play with Mario, Zelda, Metroid and such, but they don’t wanna have anything to do with this anymore, especially since the butchery that was the Wii.
Sony are perfectly aware that Nintendo and Microsoft are at their weakest with their reputation with gamers, and they plan to go all-in with their PS4 to try to end Nintendo. 2015 will see tons and tons of PS4 exclusives, you can count on that. Nintendo are already recognized as the kids’ company by many, and it may get worse in the future if they do nothing about it.
And I never said that people will buy Bayonetta 2 and not MK8 and Smash, you didn’t understand my sentence. Of course MK and Smash will sell. But gamers who left Nintendo because of the Wii that disappointed everybody but the grandpas and aunts won’t buy a Wii U because of those semi-casual games, that won’t be enough to convince them.

PS : honestly, even the biggest Nintendo fanboys I know, including me, understand that Nintendo is going down. You’re, with the 14 year-old kids I’ve seen on this site, the only guy who doesn’t seem to get what’s happening in the gaming world.

Also consider that Nintendo has huge cash reserves and a flourishing handheld console, they won’t be going anywhere for a long time.
Up until the recent discontinuation of the Wii, it was the highest selling console of the last generation by quite a margin too.
I know they are not going down right now. Hell it would be a loss for the whole gaming community if they did. But they dropped the ball with the arrival of Sony into the gaming industry. PSX sold way more than N64, and the PS2 is the most sold console ever.
Wii sold more because of all the aunts and grandpas buying one/getting one as a present and playing Wii Fit twice. It’s absolutely not representative of the gaming community, they obviously all went for the PS3, including millions of Nintendo gamers who left for Sony. I myself bought a Wii ( two in fact ), gave one to my neighboors ( who played it for a month then sold it and bought an Xbox 360 ahahah ) and lost the other. I’m pretty confident to say that if you don’t count all the casuals who bought a Wii, the PS3 would have something like 50M more sold consoles. Period.
Nintendo won’t go down anytime soon, but they will continue to loose more and more reputation with gamers. I myself bought my first Sony system yesterday, getting tired of Nintendo. They are already a joke for most of the gamers I know who think they shouldn’t make hardware and just make games. Meanwhile, Sony is going very very strong.
@Demkin are you aware that Microsoft wants to pull the plug on xBox, they aren’t making any money, the same with Sony. There is a very good chance this could be the last XBox ever.
On top of that the Steam Machine will be released next year, this means PS and XBox1 are dead for sure. In fact I think Steam Machine will win everyone except Nintendo because they’re so creative and have so many exclusive IP’s.
Sony chose to include components from the PC. These components are mass-producted and they’ll cost nothing in like a year. If they are loosing money right now, it won’t last for long. Xbox is another story, they include tons of useless shit in their machine and it’s expensive to build. I hope Microsoft leaves the industry, I really do.
Steam Machine could very much win, you’re right. But they need to improve the marketing around it. Right now, not much people know about this console, when names like Playstation and Xbox are very well known in the market right now. And you’re right, Nintendo should be okay even if Valve strikes strong with their console.

I think he is right unfortunately. Everybody likes Mario Kart, but they have never been big system sellers. Like he said, people who already got the console will buy it, but it won’t sell 10 millions systems. Same thing goes for Smash. It will sell maybe 2-3m systems I think, not much more.
I really don’t think that we’ll see a big number of Wii U sold at the end of its life. It will always sell rather slowly. It will be enough maybe, like 50-60m at the end, but don’t expect to see much more.
Nintendo went full casual with the Wii and disappointed their core gamer, too greedy for the casual money. With the Wii U, they are trying to do both gamer/casual system. The thing is, casuals don’t give too much fuck about it, as they already own one console and it’s enough for them, and gamers are either skeptical and waiting for the Wii U to release more games, either gone for Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo are paying the price, and I hope they learn a lesson out of this.

People are tired of Mario and Zelda ( ALBW sales are not that good while the game is amazing and got a good promotion ). Nintendo needs new franchises more than ever. People want new Metroid, new Star Fox, new F-Zero and NEW FRANCHISES.

Also the very possible Metroid or Starfox and all the great hindi games and eshop titles. also thereare the games that haven’t been revealed yet.
so no….the Wii U has LARGER AND BETTER titles than the other consoles. I don’t expect getting one until 2015. and there are also the already releases AWESOME games .
i believe several of those games will actually get delayed to 2015. I cant see them for example putting 2 jrpgs in one year, taking into account that they probably are coming after summer anyways.

Less baby games and maybe it will get better :) the market of grown up gamers has been increasing steadily all the previous generation. and that’s those people that have the moneys and jobs or whatever to pay for things.
What makes a baby game huh? Happy, bright and colorful graphics? Fun to play with also a lot of effort put into its design that is accessable for veterans and newcomers?
There are games for babies but I like games that aren’t boring to look at, looking good goes only so far for game heads who look past the coat of paint.

What did you think of the PS3 Twisted Metal? To me it is terrible in the sense that it has such potential and yet they half-assed it big time with glitches and such. Also unbalanced characters, and the fact that they got rid of the characters and only had the 3 main characters to choose from. Yea you got the other vehicles but not the drivers. There was a lot of soul missing, I think the game is fun, graphics are great, but they could have done SO much more with it. And unless everyone can fly than nobody should be able to fly. Sweet Tooths and Talons are cowards. And that was the bulk of online players, them or Mr.Grim. I’m not impressed that you always have to pick the guy who has way more energy than everyone, insane turning ability to run away, and pretty much a guaranteed 1 hit KO if you nail his special right. Yea ok, it takes skill to be good with him. BUT once you master him, there is no effort. Like any game. And I don’t like mastering the cheap characters and getting 1 hit kills, or flying a helicopter and flying away to get all the health and hiding behind buildings cause I refuse to fight. COD is easier for babies to play than a first time gamer on pikmin. Tried it with a new gamer and we couldn’t finish Pikmin. That’s why I hope Pikmin 4 gets online. I want a challenge on multiplayer.

i want to start off by saying i own a wii u and i support it as well. Ok now here is something nintendo could do to throw sales upward drastically. Wii U 3DS Player if your 3DS sales are remarkably good then promote a way to play them on a bigger screen via Wii U that would fix the lack of games on the system and give people 2 ways to play those awesome 3ds games that sold our 3ds systems so well.

Companies need to be honest … Nintendo will likely turn a profit on WiiU, but it will never be the profit they expected. They’ll have to actually learn from mistakes this time around … success takes hard work.
I guess you were on vacation when Iwata told investors that the Wii U so far was not a worthy successor to the Wii and when Fils-Aime admitted that the marketing for the Wii U in 2013 was not good and it was a mistake on Nintendo’s part.
Nintendo has already publicly admitted their problems and have already take steps to solve those problems. There is a blitzkrieg of Wii U commercials on TV now, celebrities like Brooke Burke, Wayne Brady, Andre Agassi and Ellen DeGeneres have promoted the Wii U. Ellen even gave away Skylander’s Wii U bundles on her show. Nintendo has set up Wii U Kiosk’s in American Airlines lobbies so that people waiting for planes can play the Wii U. Marketing has stepped up big time.

That number is being close guarded as I suspect that the numbers for the Wii U have increased significantly. That is not to say that the PS4 and XBOX One also won’t ave high numbers, but traditionally December is a month where console really make hay and even if the PS4 and XBOX One sell more than the Wii U in December, if the Wii U sales are at a high number the biased Western media will do everything they can to cover it up until they can’t anymore.
Is that why the media isn’t releasing info on nearly three week of console sells all to try to make it look as if Wii U still ain’t selling. Makes sense. VG Charts hasn’t even shown an update in Japan.
Also the media is just putting Wii U selling 78k in Japan under the carpet as if it never happened. You can only find very little resources about Wii U sales last week in Japan. Yet there were tons of articles about FF outselling 3D World at first week and Knack doing it in UK at the first week. One month later and 3D world is still top.ten but not the other two. My guess is Wii U finally outsold another console globally and the media won’t release that information. Remember when Wii U sold 2k in Japan and the info came out on Tuesday?
Yeah. They have to keep up the idea of the Wii U being a failure. Even if the PS4 and XBOX One sell more in December (which I’m sure they will) if the Wii U sells a lot like say 2 million units, that’s a win for Nintendo because it would be proof that their marketing campaign worked.

I can’t say I ever expected the Wii U to outsell the PS4 and XB1 this holiday anyway, simply because the PS4 and XB1 have literally just launched, so there is lots of hype around them and millions of early adopters. Even if the Wii U had a great first year, it most likely would not have outsold the competition.
