Iwata Discusses Third Party Support On Wii U And 3DS

It’s not news to say that both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS haven’t caught on with western third-party developers who prefer to release their games on  Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, iOS and Android. Iwata was asked by investors about the declining third-party support for the systems, but didn’t really give a clear answer as to why they no longer want to bring games to Nintendo platforms. A welcome bit of news is that they’ve received some Nintendo 3DS software proposals from third-party publishers, but these are likely to be Japanese.

“Finally, in terms of third-party support, while many point out that Nintendo has traditionally been weak in terms of acquiring it, if you consider the Japanese market, it is fair to say that the number one dedicated video game system that Japanese third-party publishers are focusing on is Nintendo 3DS. This is because Nintendo 3DS has an overwhelmingly strong presence in the hardware as well as software markets for dedicated game systems, meaning that it would be illogical not to do business on Nintendo 3DS, and we are cooperating with third-party publishers in a variety of ways as long as we can establish win-win relationships. On the other hand, if you turn to the overseas markets, as home consoles are more popular, many publishers are not as focused on handheld devices. In such an environment, while we are certainly not satisfied with its overall unit sales or the results from the last year-end sales season, the fact that Nintendo 3DS has now sold over 10 million units in both the U.S. and Europe seems to be news for third-party publishers, and we have recently been receiving more proposals from third-party publishers. However, as many overseas software publishers are specialized in developing games for high-end home consoles, while they are very interested in Nintendo 3DS, it appears that they are currently investigating what they want to develop on our platform. Also, we sometimes distribute, or even publish depending on the circumstances, games that were made by Japanese software publishers in the overseas markets, and you can expect to see more examples of this this year and the next. As for Nintendo 3DS, as I mentioned before, its total global sales have already exceeded 40 million units. As for Wii U, opinions significantly differ among third-party publishers. Software publishers that develop content that has great affinity with audiences that Nintendo has historically been strong with, namely children and families, are still very active supporters of Wii U, and their enthusiasm for Wii U can also been seen from the fact that they have even reached out to us to help people upgrade from Wii to Wii U. On the other hand, software publishers are not necessarily keen on making games in genres that have weaker affinity with audiences that Nintendo has not been as strong with, where making a huge investment does not guarantee a sufficient return. With regard to Wii U, we first need to create a strong foundation in areas Nintendo excels at and achieve a sufficient sales volume. If we manage to do so, those publishers in the overseas markets who are currently not interested in Wii U will be attracted to the Wii U platform, as they were to Nintendo 3DS. This is going to be our approach in the near future.”

    1. Indeed…

The time of Revolution is at hand now that High Command is fully aware and committed into this whole mess…

  1. And it took them only 2 years to realize..
But the question is , how will they be able to attract 3rd party developers. As of now , 3rd party is pretty much dead and none of the upcoming games are to be released on the wiiu

  2. Yes, I want more third party stuff on 3DS!! Ubisoft is a loyal partner so I want to see Assassin’s Creed. From Crystal Dynamics I want classic Tomb Raider with great level design and fixed camera (it worked in past and there’s no need for 2nd analog). I want a remake of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 in MGS3 engine. These games were born on Nintendo consoles! I want another breath-taking Resident Evil with ZOMBIES!! Hear me Capcom? No las plagas or mutant freaks,we want zombies back! I want some solid racing game with real cars and great tracks. A want more FPS and TPS… I don’t care if it will be Call of Duty or if you revive Turok. Also some nice fully voiced point’n click adventure would be nice. More strategy games, there are only two of them – Fire Emblem and Ghost Recon. And we all want to finally see some RPG from WEST… I don’t care which one, but we need it. And some nice beat’em up in 3D would be also welcome (Ninja Gaiden for example).

    1. That is a nice wishlist. LOL I like the part about zombies for RE series. Capcom, you getting this – please stop watching the Paul Anderson movies!! Make some RE games that are survival horror instead of action schlock!
Also technically, Metal Gear wasn’t born on Nintendo consoles, it was first made for MSX in Japan and ported to NES. Metal Gear 2: Snake’s Revenge isn’t a sequel to Metal Gear. The actual sequel (Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake), also for MSX never made it to NES. The first US version was on the MGS3: Subsistence edition. But, I get what you’re saying about Nintendo getting Metal Gear. I think everyone would love to see at least the first game completely remade.
Iwata’s quotes are a little vague. It would be nice if he had a list of 3rd party projects that were happening (like X) instead of crazy translated marketing speak. I at least think he owes it to fans to just set the record straight with concrete titles.

  3. The issue is that they aren’t getting EXCLUSIVE 3rd party stuff outside of Platinum.
We need stuff like No More Heroes, Disaster, Tatsunoku vs Capcom, The Last Story, REmake, Ikaruga, MGS:Twin Snakes, Skys of Arcadia, FF: Crystal Chronicles, Red Steel, Killer 7, WHERE’S ALL THAT SHIT?!

Throw money at companies to get off their ass and actually make original content…

    1. Nobody gives a fuck about multiplats on WiiU. If you want multiplats, get one of the other 3 platforms. You don’t buy a WiiU and say “Can’t wait to play the new Assassins Creed”, unless you’re really really stupid.

          1. …..that’s not even an accurate “comeback”.

I’m not acting like Nintendo is a fucking army, and that any game that isn’t their’s is shit. I actually play GAMES, and OWN consoles, regardless of who the fuck made them.

Fuck your own ass with a wiiremote, you idiot. Can’t believe you’re someone in “higher education”, apparently. How the fuck do you survive a single day…

            1. Of course you don’t understand since you are incapable of having a higher education and blows his rage out of proportion for basically no reason whatsoever…

It’s the internet/games, not the Galactic Court of the Milky Way…

Milky Way, stupid name that I’ll change in the near future…

  4. Basically third party developers are say “We don’t care about the Wii U anymore” Like that’s news to anyone. I love my 3DS but I don’t really care about getting a Wii U since its doing so well. The Wii U is slowly turning into the sega dreamcast.

  5. Third parties aren’t supporting the Wii U because 1) they have to spend extra time and money to develop a game for a different control scheme with a different kind of gameplay and 2) they have no incentive to do so because Nintendo can’t sell their own damn system.

    1. 1) Nobody is forcing anybody to spend extra time nor money on the gamepad, hopefully DKC:TF will lead the way on that front.
      2) Well… Kinda bias when Nintendo is the only one that is expected to sell their console with only first party and sloppy ports.

  6. they actually think they can win 3rd party support back after saying the wiiu is for kids and their parents. they must be out of their mind.

  7. Developers are just lazy and want a quick buck gone are the days when developers would make games because they loved to create original stuff and let the players decide. Now they decide what games we should play and like with games that end in 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,………..100

  8. Wii U is doomed. No 3rd parties, stupid fanboys that dont buy 3rd parties, same games over and over, doesn’t know how to use the flop pad, over priced weak console for $300, rehash game ideas, and catering mainly to kids.. r.i.p Nintendo, Wii U

  9. Nintendo is cheap, damn it all. That is why Wii U is underpowered, why Nintendo doesn’t have strong third party support. You can not offer underpowered console when direct competitors offer more powerful dedicated home gaming console, for $400 (PS4). Who is going to buy a Wii U over a PS4?

  11. man u people are negative why do u guys want nintendo to fail so badly anyways is it your business ha! i doubt it , nintendo is the only company that makes GOOD games and doesn’t rely on 3rd parties in order to sell , if it wasn’t for sony’s or microsofts 3rd parties they would have been gone by now ,good day :}

  12. How about Nintendo of America steps up a bit to inform the HQ in Kyoto what’s really going on overseas and what they really should be doing???

  13. I just don’t understand why Nintendo doesn’t realize the platforms for this Wii U and Wii were too underpowered for home console market. Nintendo can get away with it on portable consoles but no for much longer. Nintendo needs to make really powerful home console platform to win period. Why can’t Nintendo realize their mistakes? If the Wii was more powerful, it would have totally dominated. The Wii U failed because the platform is underpowered period.

    1. Stop being stupid bitch

Gamecube and Xbox were more powerful than the ps2.
      Can you guess who won?
Your “underpowered” statement is invalid and ironically, UNDERPOWERED.

  14. I think the biggest issue for the Wii U is not even so much the lack of third party games. If people buy these games then devs would be more willing to cooperate with Nintendo and release more multiplats in the future. What will happen though when you get games that push the ps4/xbone to their limits? I’m certain that games like these won’t run on the Wii U’s inferior hardware. I’ve always preferred Nintendo games over those offered by Sony/MS and last gen I gave the PS3 a go. While it’s a great console, most of the games didn’t really appeal to me. The only must haves were games like The LoU and Dark Souls. Other multiplat games like Dead Island were fun albeit too violent. So yeah, it’s sad to see the Wii U being underpowered again compared to the competition.

  15. Just wanted to say to the the “Commander”. I agree with people’s opinion regarding you. You come here every article talking about the empire, yet you don’t even HAVE a wii U.
