Nintendo Has Apparently Spent Over $100 Million On Mystery Tech Acquisition

Senior Research Analyst David Gibson has revealed on Twitter that Nintendo has apparently spent over $100 million on a mystery tech  acquisition. Gibson says there’s no word as to what the acquisition was for, but it could be related to the forthcoming Quality of Life product which Nintendo has confirmed they’re developing.

Thanks, David

    1. Two other Nintendo fan sites (which are not to be named due to the rules or this site though sure you can find if you know how to use Google) are confirming that sources are saying this def has to do with the announced QOL project. It is believed the money is being spent to develop technologies that will establish Nintendo gaming hotspots at various merchants and well known stores. Basically you play your 3ds at these hotspots and you receive some sort of incentive or club points as a reward hence the “non-wearable” technology. I am kinda disappointed by this I was hoping for something bigger.

      1. to elaborate on what you’re saying …

Nintendo probably bought patents … acquiring patents is very trendy right now and is the biggest assets qualifier of a company.

the patents are probably gaming related … and therefore QOL related … sure … why not.

      1. Maybe an announcement in 2017 perhaps

I’ve notice some of Nintendo’s products go in a weird cycle, they announce it the first year, the second year they release it.

  1. PLEASE!!!!!

Let it be something like Capcom has been brought by Nintendo! or platinum too!
    think of it……resident evil….monster hunter…….MEGAMAN……lost planet.

anyway MH is Nintendo exclusive :P.
hopefully its not a tech thing,

what is INTRIGUING is that’s a quarter of their losses.

    1. dammit. it is a tech thing! D:.
oh well…..let Capcom bleed for a while longer then.
but…a surpsise announcement of that would be amazing.

    2. “Let it be something like Capcom”

capcom is only worth ~8 million so by comparison buying capcom would be cheap ;)

i hope it’s a tech thing.. but not something related to that QOL platform but hopefully something related to gaming

can only hope that nintendo continues to innovate

      1. oh this is a great thing!

though personally I would like both…but I think securing more studious is more important.

      2. Capcom had a net income of $26mil USD in 2010 and employs almost 2500 people. How does that equate to $8 million value?

        1. my mistake, apparently i read it wrong
          1.2 billion market cap
for some reason most stock sites quoting the TSE show it having a market cap of 8 million.. it does seem a little low in hindsight ;)

so 100 million would be not *quite* enough

      1. and what would that change?

the gamecube was powerful.. did that help? the n64 was powerful.. which console won that generation? oh right the PS1 with roughly half the power

no they could go back and start development on their games one year earlier, THAT would help

        1. The GameCube and N64 had Cartridges and Mini-DVD’s while most consoles like the PS2 and Xbox played DVD’s which were immensely popular back in 2000.

            1. Mini DVD’s only hold 1.4 gb of data. Because of this, many multiplats skipped the GameCube and developed for Xbox and PS2 in favor for the standard DVDs.

              1. well many multiplats skipped the wii aswell.. most of them actually… it was still very successful

not to mention that the wii is yet another example that power isn’t everything in a console

and if you take a look at a gamecube release list you’ll notice that the gamecube still had a fairly large library of 3rd party titles

1.5GB was plenty for most games at release of the gamecube.. quite a few early PS2 games in fact shipped on CDs
the disc size only turned into a big issue later on.. but the gamecube failed from the start

                1. If the Wii U was as powerful as the PS4 it would be more successful than it currently is, many gamers want power. The GameCube i would’t say failed, but it wasn’t a big success. it could only play games while it’s rivals could more.

                  1. the only thing that’s certain if the wii u was as powerful as the PS4 is that it would be a lot more expensive than the PS4

whether or not it would be more successful is complete speculation on your part and past examples show that the equation power=success doesn’t work

                    1. How would you know if it would be more expensive? If N made a console exactly like the other two with similar power and controller, it would grab alot of the other consoles audience, especially with its exclusives. I’m not saying power sells consoles, i’m saying being like the competition (who happens to be succeeding) as well as great 1st party games sells consoles.

                    2. “How would you know if it would be more expensive? ”

because nintendo has always been very conservative about subsidizing their hardware.. also they’ve seen what that did to sony and microsoft
sony is already subsidizing their hardware.. you don’t honestly believe nintendo would subsidize theirs even more just to get in the price range of another console…

“If N made a console exactly like the other two with similar power and controller”

if nintendo made that they’d have exactly the same console
how do you suppose that would help in garnering an audience with the image nintendo has acquired in the past 10 years?

you’re not looking for a wii u with PS4 performance, you’re looking for a PS4.. i suggest you look no further and buy one and just ignore the wii u because it is obviously not for you

                    3. ” i suggest you look no further and buy one and just ignore the wii u because it is obviously not for you” I have a PS4 and I don’t like it, I like my Wii U the most and it is perfect for me. You’re making it seem like I want it to be more powerful, not at all.

                    4. sorry i was under the impression that this was your whole point

personally i prefer having different choices with different features.. having all consoles on the market be exact carbon copies of each other? boring

          1. and in case you’re referring to the usage of the PS2 as a DVD player: DVD players had been out for years already and were dirt cheap when the PS2 was released

          2. oh and there’s more examples.. for example the megadrive.. completely outsold by the NES even though the NES was a lot less powerful

should i mention the psvita too or was that enough now?…

the distinction between failure and success of a console is not made by its hardware power… not by a long shot

              1. 2 words: blast processing
but maybe you just weren’t around back then

they cared just as much as nowadays.. which isn’t all that much in fact and that’s exactly what i’m trying to tell you

it’s always been a very vocal minority that kept bickering about graphics on consoles and gave the impression they base their purchase decision on hardware specs

the examples i listed are testament to that

the most beautiful games on PC aren’t automatically the most successful either…

                1. Lets focus on the here and now, The Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One, the most powerful consoles are selling even without software. The commenter said something about going back in time to make Wii U more powerful, you said it wouldn’t make a difference on sales. Right now a majority of gamers like graphics and horsepower. See what i’m going with here?

                  1. “Lets focus on the here and now” so suddenly because it’s not helpful for your argument all those consoles didn’t happen? sure let’s pretend that’s the case ;)

to answer your question: yes i see what you’re going with and you’re dead wrong

you attest the failure of the wii u to its hardware while it’s really a problem with both the almost nonexistant marketing campaign, nintendos failure to secure adequate 3rd party support from the start and subsequently the games on offer

the wii u also sold quite well at launch.. sales only died down when games started being delayed or cancelled altogether and when people started to realize that nintendo hadn’t been ready for the launch and had almost no strong 1st party games on offer

both PS4 and XBO have quite a bit more compelling games than the wii u had at launch

                    1. I respect your opinion, you make very good points but there is no way to know what would happen because time machines don’t exist. At least you didn’t curse me out like the other people of this site would of done.

                    2. well i just can’t hear the “wii u needs moar power” talk anymore
the wii u is what it is and people have to accept that or ignore it

power isn’t a guarantee for success, never was, that’s all i’ve been trying to say really

bringing a much more powerful (and either much more subsidized or much more expensive) console to the market while doing everything else in exactly the same way might actually have hurt nintendo’s profits and market share instead of helping it

Our empire is expanding and soon we will build a new powerful army of Nintendites!

    1. qol……gaming…….gaming 2………something else would be great.

then……the Nintendo smart phone! oh they are already going into mobile in smart way….like the mk8 app.

      1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Thank you! It’s only a gimmick when it fails or is used only a few times then dropped. The touch screen was once considered a gimmick once upon a time.

    1. – Insert typical black person’s bitching about Nintendo whilst making a youtube video with his toaster here –

    2. Also, Kinect 2.0, Rumble Triggers… both Gimmicks on the Xbox One ;)

      Wii U doesn’t have a gimmick

    3. Yeah… Nintendo and their stupid gimmicks. Like making the first home system with a true analog controller, stupid gimmick, thank god it went away quickly. Oh, wait…

    4. It’s not known what the tech is, guys.
Don’t fall for the lies of haters like sasori the cock gobbler.

You know what would be the best thing yet?…

If those 100 million went to buying the entire Xbot army and convert them all ahahahahahahah…

    1. That’s pocket money to Nintendo..

Now Sony spending $2 Billion on Tablets and Smartphones… now THAT’S a waste of money

      New technology…

      Nintendo Fusion Accelerator confirmed…

Nintendo Fusion plus a custom made Particle Accelerator core technology…

We will be eons ahead of the rest!

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

With EA being crybabies, I don’t think they’d sale their engines to Nintendo. Then again, their greed might just trump their pride.

  4. SherlockWillFightBilbo

It’s going to be called Skynet.

Also, this puts the whole QoL thing in perspective. It sounds a lot more legitimate now.

  5. pokemon ruby and sapphire remake is a newstory only social rejects think it is a remake and they should kill them self if they dont think it is a new story because it says it is a newstory in the trailer

  6. It’s their new console I guess they’re gonna start developing their new console … That’s why they spent that much money

      1. I’ve been thinking.. Why Capcom hasn’t been acquired by Microsoft or Sony? They have the money, Nintendo too; but it is because Capcom it’s too proud and don’t want to be open to a bought? Or it’s something else?. If i had that money, It’s a no brainer i will buy Capcom first, and use all their IP’s in my console.
        sorry for my english.
        Greetings David.

  7. We’re just going to end up getting excited, but then it would be a disappointment… as always

    1. You’re in the wrong place, that’s the Sony camp you want to be in. PS4 was exciting… but then it became a disappointment, same with the Xbone. Wii U, however, was actually good once it first came out because it’s exclusives were actually good.

      1. Tell me then, what games uses the Wii U’s gamepad to it’s full potential?

It has failed to do what it was advertised to do.

        Oh wait! What advertisements?!?!

            1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

“I don’t care, I don’t care.” Fixed. You don’t speak for everybody, Anubis.

        1. Whoops, I forgot about Zelda: Wind Waker HD and Call of Duty actually make great use of the Gamepad… also, you didn’t really say anything about the gamepad, just that the Wii U was a “Disappointment” yet the PS4 has hardly any games worth playing and the Xbox One has some games, but most of them are on PC so there’s no sense in getting an Xbone for one game.

          1. Wind Waker HD, pretty much everyone who bought that games bought the original. And what exactly was wrong with the controls with the original for them to add unnecessary features to it?

Call of Duty, no one was online… it was rare to fine a match with people.

            PS4 has no games?

            MLB14: The Show
            Nikppi no Puzzle 4: Soduku
Nobunaga no Yabo Onlune: Tenla Mugen no Sho
            Nobunaga no Yabo: Sozo

            Thief
            Totterno E Mahjong Plus

        2. What matters is that the games are good? They can’t immediately put out the game they made it for because they likely only have an idea about the game they want to make.

  8. Pingback: Nintendo hat scheinbar über $100 Millionen in eine mysteriöse Technik-Anschaffugng investiert | GAMECONTRAST

  9. I feel guilty spending $30 on a used game that I really want. Meanwhile, Nintendo is spending $100.000.000 like it’s nothing. Ha! I hope their investment pays off. I wonder what the heck it is?

  10. Wouldn’t get my hopes up. For all we know they could be opening a gym or something with all the recent QOL stuff lol. *sigh*
If only they would invest this in making games…

  11. This won’t be a big thing. They’re spending money on this crap, but won’t spend money on the Wii U? Makes sense.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

It’s called making an investment in future technology. Companies do this all the time. To make money, you have to spend money.

  12. pink0crystal0midbus

It’s just an expansion into a new area. Like how SOny has an electronics department. Nintendo doesn’t JUST have to do video games… they are a multibillion dollar company. I’m surprised they haven’t expanded or tried to expand before.

  13. I’ll bet they purchased the necessary code to finally begin emulating N64 and Gamecube titles on the Wii U’s Virtual Console service because CLEARLY they do not have that ability.

  14. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I wonder what it is. I guess we’ll find out in a few years if it’s an investment in a future project or at E3 if it’s something they intend to use within the next year.

  15. New console. Wii U is getting dumped, and replaced by the long awaited Nintendo Revolution. That is just a classic Nintendo console name. Please be so. Make it more beefy than PS4, with third party support and a redesign of the Gamecube controller. I wish Nintendo would go that route. And a classic console boot up screen like the Gamecube and PS1 had.

    *Wakes up and cries*
