IGN Names Super Mario Galaxy As The Best Game Of The Last Generation

Popular online gaming publication IGN has awarded Super Mario Galaxy with the acclaimed accolade as game of the last generation. IGN says that the Wii classic redefined the platforming genre and gave players a smart and refreshing challenge. They concluded by saying that it was ultimately the game worth owning a Wii for.

“Super Mario Galaxy wasn’t just the latest and greatest 3D Mario game when it released in 2007 — it redefined the platforming genre. Again. Nintendo’s best designers rebounded from the excellent but still somewhat underwhelming Super Mario Sunshine on the GameCube and unleashed Galaxy, a meaty, deep adventure that married Mario’s traditional fireballs and Koopaling knockouts with a healthy dose of M.C. Escher. Its game design is as smart and challenging as it is refreshing, and, Wii Sports be damned, it was and is worth owning a Wii for all on its own.”

      1. Already making contradictions of yourself claiming to be a Mario/Nintendo fan. 3D World isn’t Galaxy but its great on its own level. Pretty visuals, solid controls, Mario Bros. 2-like multiple character multiplayer and great music while its a step up from 3D Land.

          1. Its not Sunshine with crappy camera angles so its controls is improved.

You’re probably say that for either two reasons:

            * You suck at using Wii Remotes
            * You just hate the Wii Remote motion for being “gimmicky” and therefore never bothered to learn what it can do. Least its beyond what that garbage Kinect tried to imitate.

        1. 3d land was a portable title, also, i’m not a fanboy so i don’t have to like every mario or everything nintendo does

        2. I have to agree that the controls for 3D World weren’t brilliant. In accommodating for the Wii Remote, they force the use of one button for running/attacking (a combination I’m fine with) and picking up other players (one that’s horribly annoying), even for GamePad/Pro Controller users. There’s nothing worse than having other players becoming frustrated when you pick them up, especially when you weren’t even trying to. That’s my only problem with the control scheme and the game as a whole though.

        1. Midbus is right. That’s where all 3D Mario games need even if it would complex the story a bit. More characters to play as, utilizing different challenges for them and possibly taking a step to play the game cooperatively. Playing as unique characters like Peach and Yoshi or atleast riding Yoshi more often through levels would give it a better feel. No more solo adventures with just Mario or Mario and Luigi.

      2. both galaxy’s, 3D world, and Sunshine were a severe drop in gaming quality when compared to mario 64. You put those 4 titles together and they still fall short. It’s really not even close and of you don’t agree with me then you’re an idiot.

        1. Another Sonyan/Xbot in disguise pretending to like anything Nintendo when they just hate on it for popularity scores.

          Nice try fanboy on meth.

          1. Saying that Mario 64 is the greatest game ever made makes me an Sonyan/Xbot? Explain to me how the hell that makes any sense? “Nice try fanboy on meth”, I don’t even know what you mean by that. Why meth?

            1. I agree with you, mario 64 is the best game ever made. But how you dare to call galaxy 1 and 2, sunshine and 3D world a “severe drop in gaming quality” these were awesome too at their own way . Not respecting other’s opinions only proves you’re an idiot

              1. Severe drop in quality when compared to 64. It’s not my opinion, it’s a fact. Those games, while good, can’t even touch 64.

Again, only a fact to you. I’d say Sunshine was a step up from Super Mario 64. I enjoyed being able to use Yoshi for the first time as a faithful steed in a 3D Mario game. The FLUDD was an awesome device to use. The tropical atmosphere of almost every section of Delphino Island. New enemies & other creatures to see that weren’t trying to attack or kill you. Shadow Mario was seen multiple times instead of just once or twice in the entire game. I’ll even list the graphics that were an upgrade from Super Mario 64. The only downside to Sunshine was that horrible voice actor for Bowser. But even that downside had a plus to it for future Mario games: Bowser sticks to snarls, growls, & roars for speech with subtitles to let us know what he’s saying.

                  1. You’re not allowed to list graphics. Seeing as it’s running on a more powerful machine, what would you expect?

        2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Because your opinion is fact, right? xD Wrong! If it was fact, everyone would be an idiot to disagree, but it’s not.

            1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

xD In your own delusional world, sure. I say Super Mario World is the best Mario game ever made. Does that make it a fact? In my own personal world, sure, since it’s what we all like to call an OPINION. But then again, I’m talking to the guy that hates “fags” because they’re different & think it’s a fact that they are freaks of nature.

  1. Think I sold my copy but then again I sold most of my games a while ago and after some twat stole most of them beforehand…anyway yes it was a good game and somewhat original :)

  2. So a game on a console that was weaker than it’s competitors was named the best game of the last generation? Wow… GTA V just got it’s ass beat XD

      1. Woah woah woah. Which Mario we talkin here? Some are better than others. :p I have to see which one you mean to see if it’s legit cuz GTA V is fuckin amazing. XD

        1. I’m talking about Galaxy that just got crowned for best game of 7th generation by IGN even when GTA5 had a higher rating than Galaxy. XD

I wanted to play GTA5 badly but also hope for GTA5 to be ported to Wii U one day. If it happens, that’ll definitely win back some confidence and respect for mature gamers about Nintendo.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Oh & don’t forget The Last of Us which won a lot of rewards for Game of the Year. Game of a generation trumps game of the year. I wonder how enraged a lot of Nintenhaters are on IGN right now. I’m surprised of IGN, though, since they tend to be a bit biased at Nintendo sometimes.

    1. And yet was positively received when it came to games in the end. Also its funny that they bash it for hardware and motion controls being a “gimmick” but praise when the other consoles tried to mimic Nintendo Wii in every way and failed.

        1. He’s not wrong, idiot.
Sony came out with a prototype wand controller before Nintendo did, but guess what?
They waited until the Wii Proved it could be profitable before actually pushing it onto their audience.

Same thing with second-screen gaming on home consoles.
Nintendo comes out with the Link Cable and a few games that support it for the Gamecube.
Years later, the PSP comes out, and Sony doesn’t use its potential for more than a few tiny games.

Then Nintendo comes out with THE WII U, and suddenly Sony is all “HEY SHEEPLE! LOOK WHAT THE VITA CAN NOW DO!”

Get your head out of the sand; Sony has been riding in the caboose of Nintendo’s hype train for years.

          1. Sony has always been the copycat of the big three after PS2. Instead of being original like before which made PlayStation brand huge, Sony is now busying riding on Microsoft dick (get it?) turning PS into a gimped PC in a black box and acting as Nintendo’s shadow when it comes to who’s bringing gaming innovation first.

For all we know, Nintendo could be in the right all this time and nobody believes in what they do to bring safe, respective and fun gaming to the table. But when it comes to which of the big 3 that should leave the console race, its Microsoft manly for two reasons: They’re monopolistic bastards ripping people’s money for free online play and application use compare to PC and also, PC exists so why Xbox deserve to exist when its basically similar and both have the same amount of games but, again, ripping off extra money for what?

            1. Playstation became huge because of branding and marketing, not innovation. The N64 and Saturn were both superior machines, but didn’t have the image. Cue misinformed ignorant rant against the Sega Saturn.

  3. Mario Galaxy is probably the most overrated game ever. I’m not saying it’s a bad game or anything, not at all, but in my opinion, there are better games. Hell, there are even better Mario games. So yea, I don’t agree with this at all. But I guess that’s just my personal opinion.

    1. I think i pref the mario 64, sunshine games than the floating platform ones of mario galaxy and mario 3d world etc

      1. Ok, i can understand, but mario galaxy did have some levels that were on a single planet, and mario 64 had some areas where you would warp to another spot which are like launch stars in galaxy

        1. Yes i remember a few levels in 64 that were floating islands in a skybox. I just hope the next mario game looks as good as the mario kart world.

          1. lol Mario Kart World? I never heard of such game before. Are you from the near future and is it gonna be the next Mario Kart game? *w*

    2. Yeah. I think Mario Galaxy is overrated as heck! I fully beat the game, wasn’t feeling it, and sold it. Super Mario 3D World blows it out of the water. Dude, you can play as ROSALINA. And she is a really great character. Not even Galaxy let you play as her. And 3D World has tons of replayability. I probably only went through Galaxy’s levels once or twice because It was really… meh. Mario Galaxy probably beats 3D World in music (jesus christ Gusty Garden is amazing) But that’s about it. To me anyway. I hope Rosalina can be in another main Mario game and not another Galaxy one. Space is really not my thing. And Rosie is not a Peach clone either. Far better in every way. Especially the hair. XD

    3. Mario Galaxy “overrated”? WTF have you been sniffing lately?

If any game is overrated, its COD hands down.

      1. Overrated doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. It just means it’s not as good as everyone says it is. Call of Duty isn’t “overrated”. It’s just complete garbage.

        1. I played both 64 and Galaxy back then. Both have their positive receptions in their own respective ways. Not every Mario game has to be like Mario 64 just because of the levels being open world which is basically a 1000 sq ft area that’s not even huge and easy to beat an objective quick.

Mario 64 may have revolutionized the series into 3D magnificently but Galaxy took most of Mario’s concepts and evolutionized into a beautiful craftsmanship of modern Mario platforming with gravity mechanics, motion controls and spacial concept. Not even Ubisoft’s Rayman can ever be comparably made into that caliber unless they’re serious about bringing the long waited Rayman 4 and build it around Galaxy’s inspiration.

Galaxy difficulty, style and play time is greater than 64 while 64 is more of a nostalgic classic. The only downside I had with Galaxy is Yoshi’s absence which was addressed in the sequel that I haven’t played yet.

And about COD, I say its overrated because there are too many dumbasses from players to reviewers ignoring the fact that every COD game has been the same shit since year one or since COD4 changed it completely and give it high ratings and sales just to find out later that its still repetitive with lack of ideas.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

We made our enemies declare a Nintendo game once again to be their best one…

        The only hypocrites are them…

                  1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I hate to possibly get into a religious conversation on a video game site but how do you know? Have you died for a year & came back to life to prove without a doubt that there is no Heaven or Hell? Whatever, though. Believe what you want since I can’t prove God exists to you just like you can’t prove that He doesn’t exist to me.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Darkness has always been the good one…

Darkness is eternal and was here first…

    1. Hopefully with a better story like an origin story for Rosalina and maybe a different villain other than Bowser and his douchebag “son” replacing the other 7 children as “minions”; BTW, screw you Miyamoto for that dumb change.

        1. Nice try on that last part. But Mario Galaxy 3 has a better chance to appear first than Half-ass..I mean Half-Life 3. lol

          1. Half-ass?this confirms that you’ve never even played half-life games, you stupid motherfucker, you dumb handicapped shithead

              1. And I wasn’t even talking to him. Sensitive troll is sensitive. Maybe I should serve him jarred baby food with pin diapers and Disney Infinity Toy Story figures to suck on. XP

            1. Its a joke you idiot. Learn how to spot one.

I never played Half-Life so of course I ain’t gonna rip on it like a complete idiot, which is you.

And BTW, *troll face* gotcha. :3

      1. Damn straight. I hate Bowser Jr. Koopalings are way better and have their own personalities. People actually say Bowser Jr. has more personality. Really? He’s just a stupid Mini-Me with a lame paintbrush.

        1. Bowser Jr. having a personality? He’s a fucking bratty Baby Bowser knockoff who can’t STFU with his retarded laughter. The paintbrush thing was only for Mario Sunshine BTW.

No matter what dumbass change and things Miyamoto did with Koopalings, they’re still considered Bowser’s 7 kids and I don’t give a shit what he says. No offense to Miyamoto but calling them minions, like WTF did he smoke during his time?

  4. Yeah! ^_^ Eat it haters. Not even the super graphical Last of Us, Halo or MGS4 is as magical as Super Mario Galaxy.

    1. It’s interesting when ign says something bad about nintendo you’re all like “ign is biased, you can’t spell ignorance without ign”, BUT why ign says something good about nintendo, it’s the only opinion that matters to you nintendo fanboys

        1. I’m me, and i was never a troll, just someone who wants to see nintendo that true fans deserve

      1. Only if their opinion doesn’t make any sense of just straight forward one sided bashing instead of reviewing all aspects of a game.

Better luck next time but next time, put more seriousness into trolling..as if that ever exists.

        1. Yeah, piece of shit fanboy, go cry to iwata it’s always unreasonable bashing when it’s about nintendo, but when it’s abour sony or ms it’s reasonable, fuck you

            1. He is saying you are a Nintendo fanboy, not Sony or Microsoft. He basically said that you are one of those people that think when people attack Nintendo it’s bullshit, but when people attack Sony or Microsoft, it is perfectly fine.

              1. And clearly I didn’t say anything familiar that would piss him off for such reason besides telling haters to eat it. He just jumps within my dick’s perimeter to sound like a generic tough acting internet troll for the sake of looking like a tough acting internet troll.

And also, that’s not even remotely true to what you said about what he originally said. He’s talking about me being a fanboy of defending IGN’s hypocrisy against Nintendo and if I were to uproar about people BS-ing over Nintendo, its basically about something that doesn’t make sense and just straight forward fanboy talk that’s too obvious to spot.

If there’s any source thats worse with talking more hypocritical and hateful garbage about Nintendo, its Gamespot.

And besides, he’s praising Galaxy being a good game with replies from someone else but attacks me for being a “hypocrite” about IGN. That’s fanboy damage control urging to happen.

                Get your stories straight please.

                1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

The Sony & Microsoft fanboys dissing us Nintendo fans for being fanboys are obviously mad we’re no longer taking their bullshit sitting down. We are actually finally starting to fight back at their biased hate. It was so much easier for them back then when we didn’t fight back & continued to mind our own business with our preferred console. Now they have to work harder to hate on us. In the old days, big name 3rd parties tried harder with their games to beat their competition while their fanboys could be lazy with hating others. Now it’s the other way around: the big name 3rd parties are being lazy while their fanboys are trying harder to outdo others. It’s a topsy turvy era of video games.

                    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I bet Mister Guy is one of those dislikes. xD I noticed him trying to push some of his opinions off as a worldwide fact. Anyway, thanks for the link. Finally had a reason to comment on a youtube video.

  5. I knew Galaxy would be number one. And rightly so it deserves the spot. I still consider Super Mario Galaxy & Super Mario Galaxy 2 the greatest games ever created!

    1. No other game last gen has the same magic as Super Mario Galaxy and its the best 3D Mario since 64.

  6. Galaxy (or Galaxy 2) was absolutely the right choice. If you want to talk about games that flirt with perfection, those are them. I also agree with their number 2 – Portal 2 was the only non-Nintendo game that wowed last generation. It’s a good piece by IGN and shows that they have intelligent people working there.

  7. The only thing that could’ve made this game better is if it wasn’t effing Mario.

I am so, so sick of generic 3D Mario.

    1. I want them to move away from safe cartoony look a bit. Maybe have a contrast of a real world where he comes from and the surreal mushroom world that we always see…well anyway I feel the games look a bit too safe and cuddly right now

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

No, we will never become stupid Xbots that wants realism in games…

        Games = Fantasy, period…

      2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

You keep realism as far away as possible from Mario games. I don’t want to see blood splatters as Mario jumps on top of goombas, koopas, etc. Nor do I want to see Mario without his iconic big, round nose.

    2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

It’s okay. I’m sick of generic FPS like Call of Duty, so we’re both going to have to just deal with it.

  8. i dont like mario games.
okay they are always good and make fun. but mario galaxy is the first mario game that i realy like. this game is awesome.

    1. You’ve been missing out a lot more great Mario games beside Galaxy. 64, Mario World (SNES), Mario Bros. 3 and even Mario Kart.

Give them a chance and you might happen to love em.

  9. *Gasp* That’s surprising. I thought that they were going to say that a COD game would be the best of last generation considering what IGN thinks of Nintendo.

    1. They were praising Mario Galaxy like mad when it launched years back and called it to be the game of the generation. Not only the gravity, motion controlling gameplay but the story taking Mario to space, the level designs, the graphical style that pushed Wii to its limits that even some say it looked like a 360 title and the music…the beautifully crafted orchestrated music just drifts your mind away into cheerful bliss. Galaxy really evolved Mario so much from 64 compare to Sunshine which is a good game minus the crappy camera controls. :)

      1. Galaxy was hands down the best-looking game on the Wii. They really pulled as much out of that hardware as they could. The concept of the game was just the right mix of the new and the familiar. The orchestrated soundtrack was simply phenomenal. There are so few flaws in Galaxy, and I find it to be simply irresistible in a way that no other game last generation was.

20 years time Galaxy will be the game that’s still talked about from that generation – it’s the only one that’s a true timeless classic.

        1. Very true. It made such an astounding impact in modern time gaming. Imagine what Galaxy 3 would look like and bring to the trilogy’s close. :)

Hopefully Galaxy 3 will explain more about Rosalina, bring in the 7 Bowser children into 3D Mario for the first time as bosses (Fuck Miyamoto for calling them minions and Jr. as his only child), maybe introduce a new villain teaming up with Bowser until the end he betrays him and becomes the starring villain and instead of Peach being kidnapped, have Rosalina being kidnapped that time.

    2. what game reviewing site would ever award call of duty as the best game of the last generation, no one’s that stupid.

  10. Ouch! When I saw the comments I saw everyone saying The Last Of Us was gonna get it! I should go now and see all the butthurts in that website right now!

    1. XD I can imagine such scene with all Nintendo haters in complete denial that Nintendo won last gen for many reasons aside from the whole powerful specs/HD graphics BS.

Super Mario Galaxy is an ingenious game of both beauty and innovation of gameplay fun while feeling fresh and familiar of the franchise.

    1. Am I the only one catching similarities between Stranga, LeDom, BananaJoe and Đonko are the same person? WordPress assigns a random avatar to each user either based on IP/email, so…

Weird to argue with yourself like that.

    1. There’s signs of Galaxy 3 coming and maybe an HD Trilogy with 1/2 remake would make the 3rd game and Wii U popularity skyrocket if the 3rd is done right of course. I say this because of knowing that 3rd entries of anything usually blows but knowing Nintendo, it probably won’t happen.

  11. Ah, good thing it’s the original and not that disappointing sequel. As good a choice as any for game of the generation.

    1. The sequel wasn’t disappointing but it was too familiar to the original with only bringing Yoshi back. If Galaxy 1 did have Yoshi in it with the power ups and level designs for him from Galaxy 2, then Galaxy 1 wouldn’t need a sequel at all and it’ll be the perfect 3D Mario game we’ll ever need for a long time. :)

  12. There was nothing “underwhelming” about Super Mario Sunshine. Though I always thought those pianta characters was odd. It made me kinda miss the usual Mushroom Kingdom characters, such as Goombas and Koopa Troopas etc. And I for one loved the fact that Bowser finally had a voice, instead of just constipated grunts. We all know Bowser can talk, and that’s the only game where the cat didn’t get his tongue.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

*twitch* I’d rather have the grunts than to EVER return to that horrible fucking voice for Bowser from Sunshine again. He, like Ridley, should never be heard speaking in a language we understand unless the voice actor himself sounds like a badass that mirrors their status as the EPITOME of a Mario & Samus villain. Just grunts & roars for them with subtitles to let us know what the hell they are saying. Bowser never should have spoken in a coherent language since that’s the voice we got for him in Sunshine. So glad the Galaxy game returned to just roars & grunts.

  13. To me the second star in Cosmic Cove Galaxy is reason enough to buy Galaxy 2. It’s one of the most ethereally beautiful locations I’ve ever seen in a game.

  14. Super Mario Galaxy is THE perfect game!!! (for it’s time and so on) hopefully nintendo is working on a similar title for the wii u…. :-)

  15. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

IGN actually gave Super Mario Galaxy the title of Game of 7th Gen? I’m surprised since they tend to be biased at times toward Nintendo. So, Last of Us, how’s all those “Game of the Year” rewards?
