We know that Wii U sales are steadily improving and that Nintendo has some fantastic titles lined up for this year. David Cole, an analyst at DFC Intelligence, has told the New York Times that the Wii U has shown that Nintendo can entice their dedicated fans to part with their cash, but the company hasn’t done quite so good a job at expanding the market as the original Wii console did back in 2006. Cole also says that its troubling for Nintendo that kids today are playing games on their tablet and smartphones rather than dedicated handhelds.
Mr. Cole, the game industry analyst, said he believed the stronger sales of newer Wii U games showed that Nintendo could still attract its longtime dedicated fans, but not necessarily the wide range of gamers, including fitness fanatics and seniors, that the company won over with the original Wii.
Also troubling for the company is that children today are increasingly playing games on tablets and smartphones, where Nintendo has no real presence, rather than on Nintendo handhelds, an important business for the company.
“That’s the biggest concern with Nintendo is that they lose out on that audience,” Mr. Cole said.

You don’t say!
The empire will never leave those civilians alone for their treachery…
seriously people shouldn’t call mobile games games. Minigames at most you aren’t going to play on a phone for 4 or 5 hours at a time unlike proper games
I agree. Unless it’s a emulator and you’re playing an old game on your phone, I can understand. But playing games like angry birds, candy crush, wwe superstar etc for hours is a no. I was just playing dragon age inquisition for hours by breaking the map 😂😂😂😂
They have the game for androids?
No I meant for the console lol. I’m talking about consoles once I brought up dragon age.
Android don’t have shit. lol Believe me. I had Note 3 to find that out directly. Compare to iOS App Store, Google Play barely has a handful of games and apps while iOS continuing getting more exclusive content every week.
They both have around the same amount of good games though, those iOS exclusives are mostly cash-grabs/developer was too lazy to port
Noooo they don’t. Look at both of the top selling apps from Apple Store and see if more thna half of them exist in Google Play. They don’t and probably for a good reason.
Further shows the gaming market is so fucked because of that.
i’ve played candy crush for extended sessions and clocked over 92 hours
So you admit that you are part of this infected problem then…
Lml good one.
I’ve played Candy Crush and I get bored real fast. I don’t understand why people like it so much…… Well of course following the crowd of other teens playing it but besides that, what was so great?
Their puny minds are easily entertained I guess…
No. Candy Crush was engineered to be addicting just like the taste balances on many chips are. Take a look at the game theory video
That’s what I just said…
S A R C A S M
Bout to say 92 hours? Would rather spend my time trying to create the worlds biggest turd..
there are full games on the mobile market, but they don’t sell well as the casual market player just want a game they can pull out and play for 10sec to a minute then put it in there pocket again.
My wii u gamepad automatically turns on to reveal e-shop adverts and drains its battery wtf
You can turn that off
can you turn it off for me?
I think it’s somewhere with the power saving features in the settings but I’m not 100%sure.
Iv really gotta to remmember to do that… the blue light flashing in the dark when im in bed annoys me.
It does not turn itself on unless you left it on without auto power save switched on.
It does. Since the Wii U update with the quick start menu, the Wii U controller can turn itself on to display ads and promos. It’s more of a matter of the controller (and system for that matter) being in a stand-by mode.
Mine did that and I kept wondering why my controller battery was dead each time I wanted to play. I finally caught my system doing it a few times, found the settings to turn off those annoying ads and now it doesn’t do it any more.
That never happened to mine at all.
I hate ubisoft. Also i got a i hate ubisoft wall paper. On meh phone
Sounds lovely indeed…
Yup commander i was so angry at i night. I just heard just know they took away my tetris. And made it worse ik this is old news. But i just heard it late last night.
Sorry for bad grammar just woke up
I’m not the Grammar Nazi Cyborg so no problem…
I agree with the Wii U hasn’t done as good as a job as the Wii, but the Handheld comment I don’t agree with. The 3DS is doing really well, maybe not as well as the DS line, but still really good sales. Plus, Handheld games on 3DS and Vita should not be compared with Mobile/Tablet games, because Mobiles/Tablets are not dedicated gaming devices. The 3DS should only be compared with the Vita and Vice Versa. But still, this is probably the most accurate analyst to say the Wii U isn’t doing amazingly well. Because this person lists good points and bad points about the Wii U and it’s sales. Yes, the Wii U is only really being bought by Nintendo enthusiasts and not very many others. As a Wii U owner, I agree wholeheartedly with this guy’s comment.

*wink*
Are you implying that I am an Xbot? Because I’m not. I haven’t owned a single Xbox console to date and still don’t plan on owning one…
*Cybernetic Facepalm*
Do I need to watch the video to get it? If so, then *Cybernetic Facepalm* indeed…
I was bored and I just edited a silly video, nothing more
O.H, O.K…XD
I watched it anyway…XD

We must have hope. with hope nothing can be bad. :)
Honestly, I don’t think I’m leaving Nintendo any time soon, Nintendo is an influence for me…
That influence it has on me? The world is too big… Enjoy life on the couch. XD
Wii U will never reach the top sales for this generation, it’s a nichie console already, so focusing on the fans is the best thing Nintendo can do by now.
Of course, maybe Nintendo do something really able to turn the tables, like Sony did for the PS3 in 2009, I would love to see Nintendo doing this.
Mario Maker seems to have a great potential to do that…
Personally, I see the upcoming Kirby and Yoshi games being able to draw back parents. Splatoon might bring entice actual gamers. Nintendo needs to advertise though.
While Wii U -experience as a whole is IMO worthy, the platform still lacks a game that gets viral enough to generate the kind of buzz that draws in big crowds, I was hoping B2 might have been that, but its launch came and went quietly, despite it being a great game.
Well Yoshi yes but Kirby…
Kirby seems like a good game behind the scenes in a way, specially this upcoming new game…
But indeed, I don’t know why High Command didn’t advertise Bayonetta 2 enough…
Bayonetta 2 poor advertising was because of the “smash embargo”, basically any game that could hurt smash bros should get poor marketing campaign.
Those games ( kirby, yoshi) are for the current audience and will not make any significant impact in console sales. Splatoon might be a huge flop if it’s not priced properly but again I don’t see anyone buying a console to play it in any case. Advertising is great but the content matter would still be targeting the same audience.
I want to believe this. Mario Maker will be the game of a life for many Mario fans, but at the same I fear that Nintendo will stop making 2D Mario after this game.
Doubt it
“Cole also says that its troubling for Nintendo that kids today are playing games on their tablet and smartphones rather than dedicated handhelds.”
Didn’t seem to hurt the PlayStation 4. Every generation has one console that is to go to console. Ps2 Wii ps4.
Nintendo just didn’t hit the jackpot this time. Same with the GameCube and n64. But they’re still making money and more importantly good games.

If Nintendo really wanted the Wii U to sell better they could. It’s just for some dumb reason they favor the 3ds more.
That’s because the 3DS is actually selling
Yeah because Nintendo caters better to the 3Ds over the Wii U. Ignoring when 3Ds first came out sells sucked until Nintendo put their allllll into it to get it to sell….unlike their Wui U console. After all why did Nintendo gibe Luigi’s Mansion 2 to 3Ds watering it down? Because they like the 3Ds better.
In other news, the sky is blue.
Meh. I understand the need to expand the consumer base, but I think that there’s little that CAN be done. In Nintendo’s defense, the groups that were referenced here — fitness fanatics and seniors — are kinda difficult to “catch” with ANY video game system. It’d be a miracle if Playstation and/or X-Box could get through to those groups.
Yeah, but cell phone games can’t compete with console or a handheld. So those kids are lost. To much in app purchasing for everything now days.
The in app purchasing is what most developers do, but mobile games actually can have some replay value. Did you play plague inc? There are no mandatory purchases like how candy crush lures people in.
Nintendo needs better advertisement for the wiiu, very seldom see any type of Nintendo commercials….Wiiu is so under rated uts a shame, may be my favorite console of all time!
Nintendo needs exclusive strategy and rpg’s to attract the core. The WiiU is a console that you purchase along side the xbox or ps. If you simply add 3rd party games it wont change much.
If Wii U could get like 5-6 “good” 3rd party exclusives every year. Then the Wii U would be winning this generation. I’m not talking about Bayonetta 2, I’m talking like if they got exclusivity to games like Project CARS, Soul Calibur, Beyond Good and Evil, a (good) Star Wars game, Viewtiful Joe, No More Heroes 3.
Then, all Nintendo needs to do is find or create a realistic FPS that can rival Battlefield and CoD.
That’s really all Nintendo’s Wii U needs to get the most sales this generation.
I don’t understand why people care more about buy a “3rd party” game when a higher quality Nintendo game could be sitting right next to it. If people knew about these games then the system would be selling. But who’s going to tell them “Bayonetta 2 is better than Far Cry 4” or “Spatoon is more original than the next COD”

Any kid would rather play games on a 3DS than a tablet/smartphone. Those games are reliant on touch screen controls and are pretty short. Also the visuals usually aren’t interesting, and many of the games are just malware containing apps that damage the device and encroach on your privacy. But there’s also buttons, 3d, two screens, an amazing game library, and iconic characters featured in games you can’t play on any other device. Phone and tablet games are boring
I agree that phone, tablet gaming is boring. However, the unfortunate fact is that a lot of kids are playing games on mobile devices instead of a 3DS. If you ask a kid what comes to mind when you say portable gaming, a lot of them will say ipad. You can see it on Kids React to the original Gameboy. A lot of them said “where’s my ipad?” or something like that. That’s what first came to their mind instead of “where’s my 3DS?”
I’m hoping that it has more to do with them not trying a 3DS, rather than actually preferring it. In any case, I think that parents that let their young kids own a smartphone are irresponsible. The Internet can be a hostile environment for kids to be in, with trolls and cyber bullies etc. You’ll never know who your kid will run into. If parents want to keep in touch with their kids, get them a cheap basic phone, then buy them a 3DS or 2DS; use their own judgment to decide which one. I don’t have children of my own, but if I did, that’s what I would do. Parents need to consider what they should buy for their kids more carefully, in my opinion.
Reblogged this on The Daily Planet.
Wii U need Fifa 16 – all boys play Fifa – Nintendo is selling 5 millions less units because off it
I hope you’re joking. (O _ o)
He isn’t and it’s pretty sad since all FIFA games are pretty much the same with the same minor updates. It does sell well though
EA Sports ganes have been here much longer than COD and they changed even less each year. EA even lies of “Next Gen physics”
That’s because a wide range of gamers are total boneheads. I can’t believe the CRAP that most gamers like these days.
At least this analysis makes complete sense rather than just stupidly bashing a hardware for “specifications” excuse or “lacking third party” who also deliberately distant themselves by pissing off the fanbase with gimped games stripped on purpose. But also Nintendo hasn’t done enough for Wii U and giving the console “Wii U” name was in fact a bit of a mistake.
He is only logical…that is all.
At least he’s NOT that big mouthed, Xbot fanboy douchebag Michael Patcher.
Doesn’t he sometimes criticize Microsoft? He’s an analyst, someone paid to make predictions of the market. Of course maybe he may be slightly biased but still.
Idiot defending a biased idiot…I see the resemblance now.
Yes because putting One next to the 3rd console makes perfect sense
Especially if that “One” doesn’t have compatibility with all 360 games and purchased Live Arcade/Indies plus no getting rid of DRM.
well give that guy a medal! (on it are the words captain obvious)
Boys 8-12 years wants: Fifa, cod, GTA og minecraft. They do not know about Zelda, Mario and Luigi.
I’m thinking Mr. Cole has a memory problem because the Wii U was specifically stated by Mr. Hiyoshi Yamauchi that the Wii U was meant to bring in Core Nintendo fans. They made the original Wii to do the opposite and expand their domain. They don’t care what the analysts say; nobody does anymore.
Wii U is possibly most underrated machine to ever grace this generation’s market (not just in the sense of Video Games) Vita just doesn’t have enough defining qualities. Wii U has much more high quality exclusives than PS4 and X1 and could have been beneficial towards 3rd parties but they just don’t feel like putting an effort to a machine that won’t make them a lot of money (not saying the other consoles are overrated but come on)
Yes, thank goodness someone understands…its like all the third party publishers went cookoo after it was released and turned into babies.
