James Miller Takes The Crown And Wins Nintendo UK’s Super Smash Bros Invitational Event

James Miller will no doubt be celebrating this evening as he has scored a win at Nintendo UK’s Super Smash Bros Invitational event which took place today. There were a total of 32 players at this year’s event and James Miller won the event playing as Mario’s much-loved brother, Luigi. As well as knowing that he had defeated all this opponents, Miller also walked away with a £60 Nintendo eShop voucher to spend on games of his choice.

Thanks, Martin K

    1. I just looked up James Miller and Google produces a bio of someone with the same name who got assassinated in 2003…

      1. “James Miller” as a name is very common. The first name, “James” has been on the top ten baby boy’s names list many, many times before. Then, the last name “Miller” is one of the most common surnames in the U.S. Heck, a couple years ago the film, “We’re the Millers” came out and the last name was used obviously for how common the name is.

Some people like common names like that, but I personally find them ill- inspired.

  1. £60? I don’t know about British prices, but if they’re similar enough to the USD that’s not enough to get one standard Wii U game on its own. Of course it might be since I think the pound is worth more, but still.

    1. On average a game here costs £40, so that’s one full game and then some. Around xmas I picked up Shovel Knight and AC: Black Flag for £20 so £60 is pretty decent.

    2. Mate. Spot on. 60 quid is an absolute cuss. That’s about 7 snes games for that overpriced thing. Well done to the kid tho and good to see Luigi

      1. Luigi is a great character. Good recovery, his fireballs (along with Mario’s) is one of the best stall items in the game, he has a quick and effective one hit kill-type move, he is pretty fast, his attacks have a wide range, he is great in the air and on the ground and his side smash has one of the strongest knockbacks. Luigi is a very solid character.

    1. Keep in mind that this was a relatively smaller tournament with none of the bigshots in attendance. ZeRo’s Diddy, Shulk, or Captain Falcon would have won with ease. Diddy is still the best as far as I’m concerned. If someone dethrones him in the next Apex, then we’ll see. Luigi is a great character though and I would place him in the top 10. His lack of KO potential is what holds him back. His throws can’t KO even when the opponent has over 150 damage!

        1. That has almost infinite combo potential, but at high damage outputs, it’s still hard to KO with it. You can always combo into the tornado even past 100%, but it won’t KO. Name a way you can KO out of a downthrow.

          1. Tornado on stages with low ceilings, bair near the edge, b – throw, D-throw to up b, or you can tornado and spin off the edge to catch your opponent and hit them to the side of the stage.

            1. D-Throw to Up B never works at anywhere near a high%. It’s a risky gamble after you’re past 15! B-throw doesn’t work until the opponent is well past 150% so that’s no good either. A bair actually works, but since that’s really your only option, it’s easy to watch out for. I’m not sure where you’re getting the tornado from though as that’s the combo that I was using for the whole match. D throw to tornado, guaranteed hit at almost any damage, but it never…Never KOs.

            1. Maybe if you hit them with it while on the ground as I haven’t tried that, but certainly not in the air. He lived past 150 when I used the D throw to tornado combo on him.

                1. Yes, but it seriously never works for KO. It is a true combo to d-throw into tornado at just about any damage% (contrary to popular belief. Seriously, test it out and it works on just about any character no matter what) but it never seems to KO until you get too absurdly high damage levels. Well past 160% at any rate. Again, I’m not sure if it’s the same case as hitting them while on the ground though.

      1. I wish they would do more with Midbus! He is an interesting character. I was almost hoping in Bowser’s Inside Story that Midbus would be a girl and would become Bowser’s wife so in future games they could work together to terrorize Mario, Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom.

But, that was wishful thinking lol!

We could still see Midbus in later titles though as a stand alone character. It would be cool if he were in Mario Kart, Tennis, Party and as a Boss in the Mario Platformers.

  2. Nintendo should save a bit of its dignity and releease Mario Party 8 in HD, on the Wii U e-shop. Why do so many people bash MP8? It has such intelligent boards that other MP games didn’t have. Take off your nostalgic goggles people, and accept MP8 was the best. I grew up with MP5 and I can accept this.

    1. Come to think of it, I never heard of anyone complaining about the 8th. It was the 9th that started the BS cars change everyone hates and even said MP8 was the last faithful game of the series, aside from Island Tour, that was actually traditional and fun.

      1. Oh ok, I thought I heard negativity on it. But I actually do think it’s the best by far, cuz in many of the other MP games, you just go around the board trying to collect star. MP8’s boards actually brought so much more. You invest in hotels, a randomly generated Boo Mansion where you don’t know what’s next, one straight path, a train that has its cars switching, the Bowser one, you even have the traditional one with random spots for stars–I’m sorry, but no other boards beat it. The mini games were fun as well. For me it’s just the graphics and respolution that are pretty poor, especially now that I play on an HD TV. Making an HD remake (with hopefully physical copies) would be amazing, as I now see Nintendo is not willing to go back to the traditional style. I just wish Nintendo would have expanded on the right direction they were going in MP8, with even more creative boards. I don’t just want them to go back to individual characters, I want them to make creative boards like MP8, an evolution from all past games.

        1. Mario Party 8 was the last Mario Party game I have ever gotten and played. I own and beat every single Mario Party game before the 8th as well. My favorite Mario Party is Mario Party 1 and Mario Party 3!!!

          1. Yeah, the 8th was also the last one I got, even though the only one I got before it was the 5th. I have nostalgic memories for it, and it probably has one of the best single player experiences for the series, just I loved it. Though, don’t you agree MP8 has the best boards by far? To each their own, but I really do think so, without thinking of it in a nostalgic way. The boards in MP5 we probably much more detailed, but MP8 has the best functionality for boards. Koopa Tycoon is the most ingenious board they’ve done yet.

  3. Diddy Kong can rack up some nice damage. He’s just fun to use, love coming across Donkey Kong in matches. Diddy’s just to fast for him.

    1. I wrecked a Diddy Kong last night with a Samus. He kept trying to grab me for the air combos, but Samus’ rolls are goo good against Diddy and Samus’ air dodge is too quick for the combos to work.

It took a while of dodge rolling and grabs and slowly racking up damage, but I ended up winning :D

        1. In general, you seriously haven’t noticed that UK Nintendo has been giving a lot of cool stuff and left US in the dark with garbage? And yet UK fans don’t give a fuck about Nintendo anymore.

          1. Honestly, no, lmao.
I know people from the US have been complaining about the European Club Nintendo having more phyiscal rewards than the US, and about missing out on the regular sized New 3DS while Europe did get it, but yea, all of that goes for Europe as a whole, not just the UK.

            1. Exactly. UK, who doesn’t care about Nintendo AT ALL, gets all of the good shit while US who does support them more gets nothing. I understand Japan gets the sweetest stuff because that’s Nintendo’s home country but fucking UK?

                      1. … *sigh* ffs Lmao. I’m telling you to IMPORT A EUROPEAN NEW 3DS AND ALSO IMPORT THE EUROPEAN VERSION OF GAMES. I know about the freaking region lock. Pay attention. Lol.

                        1. That’s a huge waste of money. Importing takes a lot of money and time plus there’s a chance that the importers will screw up the shipping. YOU pay attention to what you’re saying because it’s not possible not cost effective fool.

                                1. We don’t even know exactly what the hell it is. For all we know, it could be Nintendo’s own smartphone exclusive for AT&T (most BS cellular service) with its own App Store full of Freemium/Microtrans. crap to be forced down our throats.

                                2. But first, this NX better be worth a damn and I’m not talking about 3rd parties crawling back and pretend to care about Nintendo/fans again because at that time, they can kiss our asses and suck our own dicks for a slim chance to fool our loyalty again.

                          1. Well, I can understand the anger about the New 3DS thing, but honestly, the rewards of the European Club Nintendo weren’t even all that great. I mean, who really needs Mario stationary, or coloured Wii mote straps (which you can buy for a couple of bucks in the next best store, if you really wanted them, anyway)?
Every now and then they did add some pretty nice things, but the prices were so damn high, you would need to buy like 30 games to be able to afford them in the first place. Thing being, the stars expire after a certain amount of time (12 months, I believe?), so it was extremely difficult to get your hands on the good stuff. They’re asking for 2000 stars (which would need you to buy 8 games, a WiiU+ 4 games or a 3DS + 5 games) for gift wrapping paper already, so you see, it seriously wasn’t all that good.

                            1. Exclusives figurines? Soundtracks? Better games? Cases? Limited Edition New 3DS? UK has all of that shit. What does America have? Oh, more useless ass posters that I can find at Walmart, old ass VC games from the fucking Wii, stickers and cards…valueless ass cards…

The last GOOD Club reward they gave out for America was the gold Nunchuk back at 4 years ago and I missed that opportunity twice sadly. :(

                              1. Exclusive figurines? You mean those that cost you like 7000 stars? Or even 15000? Overpriced af. A friend of mine has one of those that were available, and honestly, it’s not all thaaat great, imo. It’s quite small, which is my main problem with it, I guess. I mean, for a figurine you spend so many stars on, you would at least expect it to be bigger than a soda can. Other than that, it does look nice, but yea, it’s not 7000-stars-nice, you know?
About the soundtracks, they ranged between like 3000 and 5000, if I remember correctly, which is still overpriced too, imo. I personally don’t even see the appeal of soundtrack CDs, really. But that’s just me, I suppose. I got the OoT soundtrack for registering OoT 3D in the first couple weeks after its release, and it’s been collecting dust amidst a bunch of other old CDs. Didn’t listen to it even once.
And well, about the 3DS, they can’t really bring the limited edition to the US when you don’t even have the regular edition. So that again is because of NoA’s decision not to bring the regular sized New 3DS to the US, which I too think is a really questionable thing to do, as I’ve already said.
Not sure what you mean by “better games” and “cases”, though.

                                1. At least the fucking options and cool shit are there. America gets scrap that you can find and buy at a goddamn pawn shop for Christ sake.

NoA really fucked us over not having the new 3DS model but then go on with the DUMBEST FUCKING EXCUSE they’ve said yet: “Oh we decided not to launch Em in the US because we don’t wanna cause market confusion” Then WTF is the Wii mini and Wii U doing together in the same shelves and WTF are the other nations selling ALL 3DS models together in the same place?!

Better games as in “free giveaway promotion” choices. Remember the 10 free games promotion from 2013 in UK? America only got 4 and not only those games people already got or didn’t want but they suck ass in lasting appeal favor.

So yeah. Nintendo is fucking with America now and kissing the wrong kind of asses in UK.

                                2. I guess you do have a point.
Also yes, the excuse for not bringing the regular sized N3DS to NA really didn’t make much sense. They’re just contradicting themselves with what they’re saying and actually doing, once again.
And I didn’t know you had less choices in NA with that free game promotion, my bad.

But yeaa, all those things aren’t just for the UK though, as I’ve said. They’re for Europe, and seeing how the UK is part of Europe, being one of the leading countries when it comes to video game business and all at that, it’s only natural for them to get those things too.

                      2. Lol. Typical American complaining like you’ve got it bad. UK ONLY JUST got the ability to buy actual games on CN, and even now your selection is undisputedly a hundred times better. Until now it was all useless crap that nobody in their right mind would want, like Nintendo wrapping paper and Nintendo golf balls. Please. And don’t get me started on other parts of the world that have no CN full stop. Complaining like this makes you look so spoiled.

                        1. Let me see your selection then. I can tell you right here and now that YOUR selection is at least adequate compare to US which is nothing but Walmart posters and fucking cards.

                  1. What do you mean, they didn’t have to give him a prize? They hosted a tournament, so it’s only natural to expect for the winner to get a prize for battling their way to the top. That’s kinda, you know, the point of a tournament? And if it’s a tournament hosted by a company as big as Nintendo, you would think the prize is something a bit bigger than a £60 eShop voucher.
Also, what makes you think it was “free” money? He actually did something for it, after all. Having enough skill to be the best out of 32 contestants very well is an achievement, I’d say.

              1. Hate luigi. Such an annoying character jus like Mario. People spam their down throw moves way too much online. He’s up there with with diddy Kong on the no skill just spam list

                1. The bane of my Smash Bros playing existence are PK Thunder recovery spamming Ness’. Only in double battles though. The move is just too powerful and easy to get off. It is impossible to counter effectively too, because if you roll out of the way, the trail of electricity still catches you and can kill you at low percentages. If you stay in your shield, it works at first, but after a while, the move will go right through the stinking shield (which pisses me off, even if I don’t try to dodge, it still goes through the shield)!

The only thing that I have found effective in not sustaining any damage from a Ness PK Thunder recovery strike is by literally running away or jumping clearly out of the path. Only problem is the Ness has all the time in the world to recover and doesn’t get punished for the move.

This really only happens in double battles, but it is still annoying as hell.

              2. Lol too bad I can’t play competitively. I try to play strategically with Little Mac. And I win 95% of the time. It’s just that competitive players know that if they throw me off the cliff I’m done.

                1. I have thrown many Little Mac players off of cliffs and most of the good ones always know how to come back. Throws toss characters “upwards,” which is easy enough for Little Mac to recover from as he falls diagonally downward.

I’ve noticed that whenever I try to go for the second hit in the air to send Little Mac flying to his death they always pull a counter move and recover anyway. It really pisses me off. I have played against really good Little Mac players who just run all over me and I can’t do a thing AND they know how to recover well.

That makes for a powerful character right there.

                  1. The thing is, Mac only has 3 options for recovery. The side b, Up B, and counter. The counter is highly risky because you just have to bait it while he’s off the field and then hit him. It’s an absolute guaranteed KO at that point. All Macs that I face either counter or side b right away because their up b is too far to be of any good. You just have to bait it a lot. Don’t always attack right away. If you do need to attack, just go for an attack from below as the counter will be unable to reach you. A good technique that I like to use it to purposely hit a counter while he’s in the air. Many times, he will just counter himself off screen. If only they would give him a better recovery, I think he would go up from the bottom of the tier ranks to at least a B.

                2. Yeah, playing as Little Mac will mean that you are doomed against certain players/characters. His limitations are simply too great, it would be like trying to win Apex with someone like Charizard or Wii Fit Trainer. I do consider him to be much better than those though. The best strategy is to just stay in the center, but even then it’s going to be a tough fight. He’s my favorite character to play as and I use him a lot, but the charcater that I feel the most confident with in tournaments is Captain Falcon. In many ways, he’s similar to Little Mac, but a lot safer.
