Splatoon May Include Product Placement And Advertising

splatoon_product_placement

The Splatoon beta/demo is available now to download from the Wii U eShop. We’ve found out that the full version will be available for pre-purchase and will set American consumers back $59.99. This could of course change as we get nearer to release. Those who have downloaded the demo have noticed that the game will include some sort of product placement and advertising. Guess we shall have to wait and find out exactly how this is going to work.

Thanks, MasterPikachu6

        1. Exactly, people play too many iPhone games or see too many YouTube ads, imagine a skatepark, there’ll be a coke billboard, that’s all

    1. It is not that big a deal. In fact it is kind of a good thing. They are giving use dlc updates for free. Most likely the ads are paying for that. Or would you rather pay out of your own pocket?

  1. Ads in my games… I expect this from free mobile games, not AAA first-party titles. I’m a little disappointed with Nintendo on this one. At the very least they could have dropped the price to $50 for having advertisements.

    1. I doubt it’ll be actual ads… It’ll be like in Pikmin 2 where there were actual real life products but this time you can wear them.

    2. StupidPeopleAreStupid

Yeah, how dare they take money off companies wanting to put up like a billboard in the background of the game? And how dare they use that money to keep giving us free DLC? The evil bastards.

  2. I really don’t mind considering there are already fake brands in the game. It’ll be cool to rock your favorite shoe brand.

  3. LOL. $60 game with ads. I look forward to seeing everyone that bitches about other third party games with product placement and such also holding Nintendo with the same level of criticism. Right?

  4. Yeah, if my character can sport Nikes or if clothing company’s can pay Nintendo to have their clothing and apparel featured in the game, who cares? I don’t. They did it with other games, like Snowboarding or Gold, etc…. no problem as long as when I am waiting on a level to load I don’t see a commercial… that would be lame

    1. Nintendo is getting paid by other companies to advertise in their game. This is usually done by smaller companies so that they can pass on the savings onto their consumers. Nintendo will just be pocketing the money for profit I’m assuming, so it just looks bad.

      1. So, did this happen in Tiger Woods Golf or Any of the Snowboarding games or others with name brands in the game? Was the “savings”, or you should say “profits”, passed on to me? No.
It is a corporation… I don’t expect a 19.99 game from them and neither should anyone else. Whether Mario is wearing Levi’s overalls or not

    >>>As long as it’s subtle advertisements then I don’t care, but if it’s like the Xbot crap where they put ads while you were playing then the New Nintendo Empire shall be created>>>

      1. the commander isn’t dumb he’s actually one of the smartest people in here but yea there are ALOT of stupid unnecessary people here for example there are some people here that hate nintendo yet THEY ARE IN A NINTENDO SITE logic? nope not here and then there are alot of hypocrites and whiny people that get mad in the most smallest things like right now people are complain about the advertisement when its obviously not gonna pop up in your face while your playing

Ummmmm i play games on my xbox and I don’t see ads… Your statement is flawed.

  6. I’m skeptical, on the other hand product placement isn’t new (Mercedes Benz and Mario Kart 8 anyone?) in Nintendo games but I don’t remember such a message appearing warning beforehand. If these are literal ads this game goes in the garbage bin.

    1. Instantly! I remember that my cousin bought a PSN game a while back that had commercials every half hour or so. It was incredibly annoying.

  7. It could just be a demo thing, since it’s costly to run online servers for it and there’s no fee on the demo; thus no money to pay for those server costs. I’d wait to pass any sort of critical judgement until the game is actually released and also if the ads are obtrusive or not.

  8. I’m assuming it would be similar to the way Tony Hawk games use actual board and clothing companies ingame. Hopefully it’s not forced like the TMNT movie product placement.

  9. It’s ok, as long as Nintendo does it. Nintendo can do no wrong. Not like those other evil meanie poopoo heads, there ad’s are bad! When Nintendo add ad’s we’re all glad. Everybody wins.

  10. Anyone remember Jet Moto on PS1? Did it have product placement? I can’t recall, really random question but this article for whatever reason made me think of it. Either way I don’t mind as long as it’s just product placement. And jet moto was badass for what I can remember lol.

  11. Sigh this is in the demo, so probably it’s just advertising for the full game. What a big deal

  12. Everyone on this site is dumb as fuck.

It’s going to be product placement, similar to the Mercedes cars in Mario Kart.

There aren’t going to be full blown ads that you have to watch between each match lol. Hell, they even showed you can play those little minigames while you are searching.
    Nintendo is NOT that stupid.

    1. Spla-Tooning in my Jordans.

Seriously, I wonder why people get mad at this and Mario Kart, But they totally forgot Mario Golf did it too, and I never saw anyone complain about it.

  13. There is a giant SCREEN on the Booya Base. That will be the most used place for advertisement. And It could be advertisement of other Nintendo games.

  14. I don’t see in what world this would be a bad thing. It would keep the clothes store fresh, this is a win for everybody.

  15. Can everyone just calm the fuck up? Haven’t you seen that giant Amiibo Box in the central hub were the amiibos pop up? That’s product placement. It has probably nothing much to do apart of this and maybe some other Nintendo games ads on the billboards of some maps. Not problem here.

  16. This is literally nothing new and something that should alarm you all. Remember when Pikmin 2 had actual real word products as treasure? Duracell Battery, R.O.B., the Japanese Mysterious Murasame Castle Disk, and a few others were present in the game.

  17. pink0crystal0midbus

I don’t know why product placement bothers people. As long as there aren’t commercials that disrupt gameplay, then it shouldn’t matter.

  18. I think it’ll be something like advertising other Nintendo brands or Amiibos, especially considering all the clothing customization. Maybe even something like the Mercedez-Benz in Mario Kart.

  19. *sigh* youre all losing your minds, its simple product placement like maybe a few billboards/signs or clothing brands, or special gear dlc? Maybe its referring to the giant amiibo box where you scan them in

  20. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope it’s the kind of product placement of games like Tony Hawk and such that use the actual skate brands and stuff. I really hope it’s not ads in the middle of the game.

  21. It’s most likely for the clothes, there may be some items based off of real-life stuff, complaining about this would be like complaining because Project Cars has car brands.

  22. I hate all forms of in-game advertisement bullshit with the exceptions of subtle references to other games/series released by the company (like a Toad in Paper Mario TTYD mentioning Fire Emblem).

Either make up a fake brand (like GTA does) or dont have it at all.

    1. What’s the problem with something subtle in the background like maybe “Coca Cola” or “iTunes” on a billboard? I’m not attacking you or anything, I just want your honest reason for hating these things so much when it’s not obstructing your gameplay.

    1. I was just bummed to hear about this update in august. I got all excited thinking Nintendo actually listened for once and was going to add it in later, but just party enhancements. Which I won’t complain about since it’s good for people who wanted to band together, but again voice chat would’ve been a nice inclusion for something like that.

Still no reason why they could not have included it for friend parties only. I also don’t get it, because it isn’t like friends don’t talk shit to each other when their playing games together.

      Meh, beating a dead horse.

  24. At least they are honest about it, that’s already way, way more than most companies do, especially when they are as big as Nintendo. I’m just gonna go ahead and give them kudos for warning us.

*claps* Well done, Sickr! You trolled a lot of people with adding the advertising part to the title. Now some people are thinking of something along the line of what mobile games do with ads popping up between gaming or during gaming.
