Fire Emblem If Mixes Up Their Weapon Triangle System

Fire Emblem games have always used the same “weapon triangle” system, the standard: swords beat axes, axes beat lances, lances beat swords. Well, looks like Fire Emblem If is going to be changing things up a bit. The weapons and their strength will remain the same, but they’re throwing some extra weapons in there too, so it becomes: swords and magic beat axes and bows, which beat lances and hidden weapons, which beat swords and magic. We already know Fire Emblem If won’t have limited weapon usage, but stronger weapons will have demerits of lowered abilities for the unit. Here are some examples:

  • Bronze Sword: can’t use special attacks (critical hits) but adds +10 to evasion from special attacks.
  • Iron Sword: no lowered abilities.
  • Steel Sword: evasion –5, follow-up attack chance –3.
  • Silver Sword: critical evasion –5, power and skill goes down by –2 for the next turn.
  • Brave Sword: attacks twice, but –4 on defense and magic defense.

Here are some of the characters you’ll meet:

  • Felicia: Maid (CV: Nozomi Sasaki)
  • Joker: Butler (CV: Junichi Suwabe)
  • Gunther: Great Butler (CV: Rokuro Naya)
  • Suzukaze: Ninja (CV: Daisuke Ono)
  • Saizou: Ninja (CV: Tarusuke Shingaki)
  • Kagerou: Ninja (CV: Rie Murakawa)

Is this a crack at the anime art style the game is going with or the lack of gameplay in the trailer?

  1. I still think this three different version of the game crap is BS and I will only have any real interest in this based on how they handle the international release.

        1. No worries, I’m a big fan and when they announced the title I was confuse with it as well lol. As anon mention, the title ‘IF’ is only confirmed for Japan only. I wonder if ‘IF’ is an acronym for something though.

Or If is a reference to the fact the game has 3 different paths your character can take. Y’know, like the “What if?” scenario things that some comics do. And it would fit considering Nintendo with their weird names & the fact they want their weird names to have a secondary meaning to it.

And future games could take place in different timelines, too, now thanks to this game if they don’t have a canon path in mind for Fire Emblem If.

  2. I hope something happens with the Advance Wars series. It would be awesome if Nintendo would add GBA title’s for eShop on 3ds. Id buy the Karp outta some games.

So each weapon will have it’s pros & cons? Well this might make some people less pissy about the fact they are ditching the weapon limits. But others won’t be as forgiving as they’ll hate the fact they can no longer play the game the old classic way. Like how certain people hated the fact Skyward Sword & Metroid Fusion were linear even though they were linear because of the heavy emphasis on story this time around for those games in the franchise… and still do hate those games because of it to the point they’d rather pretend they never happened in the franchise’s canon.
