The Latest Japan Sales Are The Worst Since 2001

We knew the Media Create sales earlier this week were pretty bad, but it turns out they’re the worst sales since 2001. The week from May 11th-May 17th saw a total of 235,000 games sold in Japan at retail, this is a 60% drop from the previous week and a 61.93% drop from the same week the previous year. Ouch! Media Create offer many reasons for this– the biggest being that it is the week following Golden Week so people aren’t spending as much, and there’s a total lack of new titles released with just remasters instead. Even Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Edition, although it is on top for Nintendo sales, still has only sold 232,683 in total which is 59.19% of its initial shipment. Hopefully this is just a lull in video game sales and things will eventually pick back up!

    1. The reason to decline is because to enter high school and college, there is an entrance exam. Majority of students will cram for about a year before the exam.

Though, due to the decline in Japan’s population, I’m not certain if the admission requirements have loosen or not.

    2. It’s not Japan. It’s Nintendo. You can’t expect sales to remain above average, or even average with NO new releases. Tell, what new games have released lately?

Nintendo has had a big problem lately keeping a steady stream of games coming in…

The ironic part about it, I thought in 2015 there was gonna be a Wii U game every month, or at least every other month. Turns out 2015 is the biggest game drought in the last ten years.

    3. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

The Decline of Video Games & the Rise of Mobile Games in Japan by Rafael Monteiro. There ya go. Perfect title! lol

  1. I blame greedy developers and publishers for rereleasing the same fucking games over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again

    1. Well, in Japan that has never really been a problem, like it is elsewhere. The problem in Japan, just like in the rest of the world, is that people are shifting to mobile gaming. This has caused a great decline in the console industry as a whole, compared to what they used to sell.

As bad as it may be in comparison to the games you’d play on consoles or PC, that’s the trend now. Everyone is so obsessed with following trends. The popular thing today is to do everything on your smartphone, even if it isn’t practical or that good compared to the devices that offer better experience and easier to use interfaces.

      1. So how do you explain PS4 sales in Japan? It’s selling better than the PS3 did in Japan. I truly believe it’s Nintendo. The only two games I have bought in the last six months is MH4U and Majoras Mask. No Wii U games. Since last Christmas. It’s a horrible game drought…

  2. Funny since the Wii U went back to normal sale rates during this, meaning the Wii U has increased in sales.

    1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

I think Nintendo would rather give up on the industry than ever leave Japan. Or worse case scenario, they actually give in & go mobile like Konami. :/

      1. Oh.. I thought it was just Nintendo..

To be fair, doesn’t Nintendo take up like 75% of the video game market in Japan?

    1. Kaptain Krusha K. Roolenstein

Yes, show Ultron when he was a mediocre villain in the movie. So weak and nothing like the comics.

      1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

        >>>And yet he beat Thor, Captain America and a few others in a fair fight, sure>>>

        >>>And my point has nothing to do with the movie at all so bringin your opinions about the movie is irrelevant>>>

  3. I equate mobile gaming to masterbation. Good for quick bursts of fun but not as deep of an experience.
