On 6th August, a free software update for Splatoon on Wii U brings a large amount of new content to the game, including two new matchmaking modes, new weapon types, an increase to the game’s level-cap and more than 40 pieces of new gear. Players will now be able to create a winning strategy and fight to be the best and most battle tested squid-squad around.
The new update introduces Squad Battle and Private Battle matchmaking options. In Squad Battle, players can participate in Ranked Battle rule sets with friends, rather than being teamed up with other players through a random selection. After a player creates a squad, friends can be recruited to form a team of two to four Inklings. Friends will always play together on the same team and battle against other squads at random.
In Private Battle, friends can splat it up in private, customisable matches. Two to eight friends can battle together by selecting their favourite map, mode and weapons. The number of participants ranges from 1v1 to 4v4, but teams don’t have to be even: if the host chooses, he or she can select a 1v4, 1v2, or any other combination of players.
With this robust new update also comes an increased level cap in both Regular Battle and Ranked Battle modes. After downloading the software update, players will be able to reach level 50 (raised from level 20) and rank S and S+ in Ranked Battle (both higher than A+).
While Inklings around the world are enjoying and mastering the current arsenal of weapons in Splatoon, two new weapon types will be available with the update, adding a new layer of strategy to the game. The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type. In addition to the new weapons, more than 40 pieces of gear, including everything from a leather jacket to a sushi-chef costume are coming to the various in-game shops in Splatoon.
Despite its size and scope, this massive August update is not the end of the splat-tacular free content coming to Splatoon. Following this update, more content will continually roll out through the rest of the summer and into autumn, including the Rainmaker Ranked Battle mode, additional maps and new weapons. They still need more maps. I’m hoping they slip a few more in with the update. Just released Camp triggerfish is my fav so far. Very technical. HATE tower mode, wish we could select either tower or splat zones. Game has def gotten better since release.

It might work like the Heavy’s minigun in Team Fortress 2: takes some time to spin up, but it has range and can shred opponents up close. That would be my guess since the weapon looks identical to said minigun.

What the hell do you mean I can’t assemble a team of friends for turf wars? It’s only ranked? None of my friends even like ranked! Those game modes aren’t fun!
I was hoping Squad Battle would inspire a new spark in my group of friends to play it again, but I guess not. To play the only game mode we enjoy, we have to be shuffled around the lobby anyway.
Would it be that hard to add a “Turf War” option to squad battle? It’s not like it won’t get picked! It’ll probably get picked a lot!

So nothing still on Dojo? Where’s content for local multiplayer? 4 people local? More stages? More modes? People give off this thing that splatoon isn’t very powerful for local multiplayer. Well, it sure seems to be powerful enough to keep bringing a ton ranked battle content. Even if all this was locked on the disc from the start, they still put too much into ranked that could have gone to local.
That is because local and online don’t require the same amount of resources, added content like this isn’t taking up resources in the way you’re talking about. The gamepad is the cause of your problems for local, and the fact local with that many players would require split screen which is even more taxing on the hardware.
And with the way Splatoon works, and the fact the Wii U doesn’t support more than one Gamepad, it kind of makes it hard to make local more than 1v1. You may get more modes, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up for more than 1v1 unless they make modes that don’t require any team work, or the use of super jumping.
I’ve always preferred inviting people over for LAN parties personally, but to each their own. Split screen was never fun to me, I like to have my own screen, and when you can see what the other person is doing, that totally kills it for me.
Damn.Lan parties are awesome. Def the best.

Is that really ALL the details? I get the feeling there will be some extra additions that haven’t been mentioned, for the surprise factor. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited for what we know we are getting, but I can’t help but wonder if that’s really all there will be.

I still don’t get why people complain about it being released as a “half game”… the way the updates have been coming (and freely) it is a unique way to add content at a pace where everyone is involved around the world who plays Splatoon, making it all the more communal. The fact that people are excited and anticipate the updates shows that this sort of thing works and makes the relationship with the game and others who play that much closer…
Voice chat… I think it makes sense to have it, but I can see why not in a way as well… I understand that some want the option, but the idea of the communal, shared experience is that everyone is sharing the same experience; an expoerience Nintendo has offered, however they please.

It’s a double edged sword, though. People that are good at video games or play them a lot get bored quicker of the game because they are forced to play the same map over & over. Some lose interest altogether & future updates don’t do much to bring them back as they’ve already sold the game or given it away. For people like me that are waiting for the game to be complete, some of us have lost interest in the game & don’t plan to buy it now even when it is complete. And if we ever do buy it, it’ll be because we were able to find it for under 30 bucks.

Thank goodness, I was getting absolutely bored with the game. The new gear, level cap and higher rank will give me something to do finally. Glad it’s coming early August. I’ve been lvl.20 and A+ 99 for too long. I also have every piece of gear there is in the game currently besides the amiibo sets (not opening mine, someone sold a set on ebay for $600!) and I’ve leveled every piece outside of that. Been like a month since I’ve seen anything new in the shops, so I assume I’ve bought everything. I mastered every weapon type too.
I’m all for fun in games, but it was getting to a point where there was literally nothing to aim for anymore other than just wasting time. So I’m really excited for this update.
Kinda wish there was something about the rotation, or if they’ll at least add one more map to rotation.
There are three maps in rotation during Splatfests- they CAN do it. Perhaps once we get more than 10 maps they’ll permanently add a third slot.
No doubt, there is an obvious open slot. I’m just hoping sooner, rather than later.

It really would not be so bad if it actually rotated the maps well, but more than often you end up playing the same map way too many times in a row. So they either need to shorten the map changing time, or add more maps to the rotation so that doesn’t happen so much.
I was going to say “Yay! The final update is coming & this game will finally be complete & finished!” Then I got to the part that says more updates will come after this one. *facepalm* Oh well.
