Super Mario Maker Was Almost A Mario Paint Game

Famed Nintendo producer Takashi Tezuka has revealed that the recently released Super Mario Maker was almost a Mario Paint game. The talented team initially wanted to make a revamped Mario Paint title for the Wii U that fully utilised the Wii U GamePad, but at the same time they also wanted to use the Super Mario Bros toolset. In the end they concluded that Super Mario Maker would be a better idea than another Mario Paint title.

“Originally we wanted to make a Mario Paint game, using the Wii U GamePad,” says Tezuka. “And that was where the idea originally started, but at the same time, we wanted to take the Super Mario Bros. toolset that we use to create the levels, and we wanted to move that toolset over to the Wii U GamePad to make it easier to create the levels with the touchscreen.”

    1. Simply put, it probably wouldn’t sell very well. It was a very novel idea for the SNES because it was a cool paint program that anyone could get into, with a lot of side stuff too. If they do make a new Mario Paint game, it would probably be an eShop title. Although, the eShop on both Wii U and 3DS already have plenty of drawing/painting programs, so the only real new things in a new Mario Paint would be side stuff. In all honesty, there’s just no need for a new Mario Paint.

      1. Especially since it would be like Super Mario Maker, but with the same painting mechanics that were found on the SNES in HD instead of something new like Super Mario Maker.

        1. Seriously, with the superior Art Academy on the WiiU, they would have made a horrible, horrible mistake going with Mario paint. Sure, fanatics would have bought it, but not NEARLY as many as will buy Mario Maker.

              1. Faggot self-racist with an unclosed gap confirmed.

BTW, I played GTA, BF3/4, Burnout, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Street Fighter, Metroid, a bit of Halo, Gears of War, do all of those sound “casual” to you? And I hate mobile trash games since they’re all aimed to scam people. Retard.

            1. Your saying an iPhone art app is better than Art Academy on Wii U? Your wrong, and here is why. First off, and last off, an iPhone screen is too small. Doesn’t matter how good the app is, there is no stylus, and the real estate is lacking. Art Academy is far superior than anything on a phone, and it’s displayed on your t.v. Aswell as your Wii U gamepad….

Your fanboyism for Apple products is sickening..

              1. No, you’re wrong and here’s why. I spent $4 on Art Academy Wii U and learned it doesn’t even have much essential tools and options like ArtStudio which has shittons of brush strokes, image editing and stuff. Not to mention it doesn’t even feel comfortable drawing on that goddamn Gamepad because it’s not accurate enough. You say iPhone screen is too small? That didn’t stop me drawing on my 3.5″ iPod touch which I’ll gladly show you my work from there. A good artists makes use of any tools at hand even if it’s just a pencil & paper or a chalk & stone.

BTW, iPhone 6+/6S+ is around for a much roomier drawing so try again and you saying Art Academy is better is just as fanboying as you claimed me to be. The only difference is that I tried them all. DS/3DS/Wii U is just not that suitable for drawing unless you devote so much time and frustration with its hardware makeup to make it happen.

                  1. One, it’s “iPod touch”. Learn how to proofread and spell. Poor piece of shit. -_-‘

Two, 12.5 inch Galaxy XXL? You’re serious? WTF you need an overgrown Galaxy phone for? Drawing? I so doubt it.

It’s a tablet not a phone. Check it out at Best Buy. Significantly larger than an iPad. Some of us can afford both. ;)

I use it to read Marvel Comics in deluxe size and watch Netflix and YouTube.

I prefer art academy on 3ds and Wii U. Better class instructions than anywhere else. They actually teach you art theory.

                      1. No shit. Never heard of a phone measured near 13 inches, dipshit.

And I guess you missed Apple’s recent conference where they revealed “iPad Pro”, 12.9″ inch iPad which now beats your largest POS Android tech by a mile. Hell, their were tablets YEARS before yours that were larger than 13″.

Why bother learning history from a video game art simulator when you got internet/school and even yourself to teach that? Still not even proving it to be a better alternative. Hell, I think I can hear Photoshop laughing at it from a distant. XP

                1. And wait, iPhone has no stylus? Funny, because I’ve seen a shitton of third party ones and there’s also a little something called “fingers” which works just as well or have you never draw/painted with your own hands before?

Your excusable defenses sucks probably as much as your “drawing” skills.

We have 2 or 3 people here that would definitely have bought Mario Paint over Super Mario Maker if given the chance.

    2. Now I have a reason to hate Super Mario Maker. I’ve been DYING for a sequel to Mario Paint ever since the original. I used to write letters to Nintendo, begging them to make a sequel, and wasting my time giving them suggestions.

I’ve never played any game as much (and for a longer time-span) than Mario Paint. I played off and on for over 10 years. Something no other game could ever compare to. I hope they didn’t completely scrap the idea of a new Mario Paint.

            ||Who I am is none of your concern, the only thing you are obligated to know is that gaming as you know it, will come to an end, forever……

        1. No, I wasn’t looking for a reason to hate Super Mario Maker. But I do feel annoyed that they scraped the idea of a Mario Paint sequel for this. And I’ve never played any Art Academy games before, but I doubt that it had all of the same options that made Mario Paint so fun. Such as animation and music.

          1. How about instead of being a lazy fuck, you get a real art application AND a sound application? Boom, you have infinitely more options than Mario Paint. We don’t need that trash as a WiiU game.

            1. An art and sound application wouldn’t feature Mario, would it? And not everybody owns a computer, or has internet access, nimrod (not referring to me).

        2. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

I did have a reason to hate it but Nintendo, thankfully, got rid of that stupid idea by putting out a day 1 patch to remove the 9 day waiting bullshit. Now I got 4 games to get for my Wii U before the year is out again!

            1. Don’t you feel stupid, replying to your own comment? You are basically, praising…yourself. At least you don’t lack self confidence. It’s just an actual Functioning Brain that you lack…

          1. Whatever helps you sleep at night buddy. Besides, nobody asked for your opinion and quite frankly, nobody NEEDS your opinion.

          1. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

I’d find it fun if it wasn’t trying to piggyback off the success of Metroid. I won’t be surprised if months or years later we find out Federation ChibiShitForce was supposed to be another game but got converted into a “Metroid” game for some stupid reason. *cough*likeStarFoxAdventures*cough*

              1. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

Oh really? I guess Other M did the Metroid franchise a huge favor. If Other M damaged the franchise, why would this game be any better?

    3. i think they should make it a on rails game that you just watch gameplay is killing gaming

remove all controls and have one big button on the pad every action then can be a button press

playststion fans would then flock to the game

    4. This is so weird, I was going to say something extremely similar the other day in another article about Mario Maker. It has the feel of the Mario Paint, to anyone who remembers that game they probably get that vibe aswell.

      1. i think mario maker is also capable of making music with note blocks aswell.

there was a video of a stage that played the rick roll music in it

    5. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

I see we have a few people that would buy a Mario Paint remake/sequel, a game that would most likely be trash compared to Art Academy because Nintendo would not add stuff that’s become a mainstay for art making games, in this comment section. Kind of like how Splatoon removed match customization & forces you to play the matches how THEY want you to play them. Oh & the game only gives you 3 colors to use when it’s initially released as the other colors, which are already on the disc but locked, gets unlocked over the next few months. Let’s see. What else about Splatoon that’s shady that Nintendo could use for Mario Paint U..? Hm… Oh right! The paintbrush, pencil, & bucket are on a time limit that rotates & only lets you use one of these tools at a time.

      ||Nothing pleases the Master Race more than watching you servants of the flawed fight each other while dwelling deeper and deeper into despair……

    7. All hail the greatest and most challenging super Mario 3 level ever!

      Run and Jump! A07F-0000-0020-F7D9

This level is doable and not crazy with jerk enemy placement. It’s all about timing, running an jumping baby. Good luck! #mariomaker #mario3
