We all are left guessing who the next character could be in Super Smash Bros. What we can apparently rule out is the character is not Shovel Knight, Wolf, or Shantae and it is a newcomer that going to get a lot of people talking. Here’s what we know so far based on a number of tweets and forum posts.
- This character is a newcomer.
- This character is popular, but may not be the #1 character on the ballot.
- This character would make a lot of buzz in social media.
- This character is a first-party character.
- This character’s inclusion shouldn’t be a surprise.
- Although one of the guys promptly deleted the tweet, the character is not Wolf, Shovel Knight, or Shantae.
- Apparently it’s a Newcomer + New Stage combo according to Stealth.
Update: Additional information has been supplied which suggests that “Not only is the new character not affiliated with the Smash Ballot according to those in the know, but the character is supposed to be revealed “very soon” & will supposedly be released by the end of the month.”

Have you seen the fans working version? That changed my mind about Ridley. A characters size doesn’t matter swing as Kirby and dedede are actually tiny, but Ridley proportions make him seem ridiculous trying to fit in a space where he could be a smash character. One might argue that you could change his stance but I don’t see it working :(
Actually, there’s a smaller version of Kraid if you ever played Zero Mission. But because Kraid is practically super slow and vulnerable, he wouldn’t be a good fighter either. One of the 6 bounty hunters from Hunters would be very appreciated like Sylux or Weavel who are both mortal enemies of Samus.

I wouldn’t say I’m for or against them. They would work in design, but they’re not specifically recognized as Nintendo-only indies or anything that’s exclusive to Nintendo. The only reason I was fine with Ryu was that he was from a fighter game that’s most popular game was on a Nintendo console (albeit long ago).

Again though….we shouldn’t be taking this as the sole DLC character to come out of the ballot. Sakurai did say he hoped for several characters to be included from the ballot, but not a ridiculous amount, so honestly, there’s still hope for everyone yet. Even the Britney Spears voters.

No one is going to mention the fact that this character “may not be the #1 character on the ballot?” I mean, what the heck is the point of everyone voting if they aren’t going to pick the winner but just do what they want? Course, that seems to be Nintendo’s style these days. So I guess it shouldn’t be a shock. Now if this character mentioned in the article is an additional character and not the one from the ballot, then ok. And this whole article is just hearsay from a former employee, so who knows if any of it is true. Can’t truly judge until the facts come out. But just something I observed from the article that I thought was interesting.
First of all, this is a rumour. Second, they didn’t confirm that this was going to be a character that came out of the ballot, simply one that was voted for. So it’s entirely possible, much like how people wanted Lucas and Roy and started voting for Lucas and Roy, that this was planned pre-ballot, and the character just ended up on the ballot. This by no means means that this is one of the ballot winners.
And if it was a ballot winner, wouldn’t it be more fun to work their way through the ballot winners, choosing who they wanted to put in, then working from the characters they chose with the least votes, to the character they chose with the most? It’s be more suspense filled in that regard, especially if they stated that that was what they were doing using blacked out slots on the character select in promotional media.

And that’s not what I was saying in regards to the voting. They do have to choose who wins, regardless of number of votes. If Goku, Britney Spears and Kirito grabbed the top 3 spots, Captain Soap, Jesus and Luke Skywalker hit 5th, 7th and 8th, and they could only choose 4th, 6th and 9th realistically, and only if they could obtain rights to those characters.
An important aspect of hype is releasing things over time. For instance if they said they would release the winners of the poll within the next 3 weeks, and released one winner per week starting with the one of the 3 with the least votes, it would generate hype, with characters increasing in interest per week, fans dying to know if who they voted for got in more than it’s even happening now. For instance, if Snake, Wolf or Shovel Knight came in third, people would literally be crapping themselves in excitement for who won over one of those characters that supposedly had top spot.
With choosing their own character from the ballot, I meant that they chose their own character that HAPPENED to be in the ballot, one that was going to be in the game as DLC alongside ballot winners regardless, but happened to have a lot of votes, not as a result of those votes. And when it comes down to it, they could throw in Metal Peach as the next DLC character for all they care.
TL:DR Winners have to be realistic, Hype is important and fun, Nintendo makes the rules.
Imagine if Ridley won the Smash Ballot. I can already see Trollurai going “Haaaah! Not happening! Your wants are stupid! He’s “too big!” You don’t understand my vision! Blah blah blabbity blah!”
Sakurai said you can “suggest” characters for Smash. It’s not a waste of votes. You literally just put in a character’s name and they’ll consider it. This ballot is not a poll. :T
It’ll be a great shame, and bullshit, if this Smash Ballot was just another chance for Sakurai to troll all of us. This guy has to keep his word for the next Smash installment & not be involved in it’s development as he’s holding it back at this point.

I predict Inkling. Why? It’s very popular and Splatoon was very heavily promoted, seeing Inkling added would promote further attention to the game, hence media buzz.

Ridley seems like a likely candidate: he’d be a newcomer, he’s popular among Metroid fans that view him as Samus’ Ganondorf/Bowser, his inclusion would definitely cause a shit load of buzz in social media because of the fact the fanbase of Ridley is split in half of people wanting him & people not wanting him, he’s first party, & his inclusion shouldn’t be a surprise because he is to Samus as Ganondorf/Bowser is to Link/Mario, he’s first party, he’s a mainstay of the Metroid franchise as he keeps coming back (Metroid Prime/Dark Samus doesn’t have SHIT on Ridley in this field), and he’s important to Samus: both past, present, & future.
But I digress. Sakurai is a well known troll to those that frequented Miiverse during the time he was doing his daily (weekdays only) Smash posts, so I’m not going to hold my breath.
