Nintendo America Says Nintendo 3DS Is “Here To Stay”

Nintendo’s Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales and marketing, remains confident that there’s a lot more compelling software to come to the Nintendo 3DS. With talk recently turning to Nintendo’s next project ,the NX, many have been wondering what will happen to both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Moffitt has reassured gamers that the Nintendo 3DS is here to stay and we should assume that there’s some great software planned for 2016.

“Nintendo 3DS is here to stay. Let me throw out a number that might surprise you. So far, on a global basis, Nintendo 3DS has sold more hardware than PS4 and Xbox One—combined. Most people find this shocking.”

“Obviously we don’t deny the impact of smart devices on the gaming market. But it’s a mistake to consider this a zero-sum game. Clearly gaming on smart devices and gaming on Nintendo 3DS can happily coexist, to the benefit of all gamers. The fact is, playing games on two very different hardware platforms means options for two very different kinds of game play. The inclusion of multiple control buttons on Nintendo 3DS allows a much deeper and more sophisticated type of play.”

  1. I don’t even keep track of the number of games on my 3DS system.

If I did, and if I included DS and downloaded games, then I think I have about 100.

    1. I often forget that I own a couple of 3DS games that I almost never play/played. Street Fighter 4 3D… Pilotwings Resort… Rayman 3D (which should have been a remake of Rayman 3, not 2, dammit xD)… And… SpongeBob Squigglepants… Yeah, don’t ask why I got that last one.

  2. How is it surprising that the 3DS has sold more than the PS4 + XB1? It launched nearly 3 years earlier; combining that with its global success, I don’t see anything shocking about that.

    1. I read this news yesterday and had exactly the same reaction.

That rotten, old comparison between apples and oranges…

      1. Whenever I see your “contributions” to the comments section, I really wonder what must be going on in your head when you decide to post comments like this, and how you can think it’s a good idea to say these completely nonsensical things even though it’s obviously going to make you look like an idiot. I really do wonder.

          1. But why would I bother writing a comment addressing your “point” when everything I’ve said in my original comment already does address what you mentioned, rendering your reply unsubstantial and unnecessary? All regardless from the fact that you yourself didn’t even try bringing up valuable counter arguments about why you think the things I’ve mentioned “don’t excuse the major gap between them”.
Also, a paragraph of name calling? You might want to look again, as only a single word in that entire paragraph could be considered as name calling. Everything else was just a description of how I’m having trouble comprehending why you would say the things you, sadly, choose to say.
And lastly, do you really think it was the right decision to question my maturity, and in the very next moment to go on about how “I should join the debate club of my school” and that “I would make it far” in there? :)

Honestly, all you just did was proving me that my thoughts I’ve expressed in my previous comment are pretty much justified. So, thanks!

Don’t mind him. He thinks he’s smart with that lame little “spinning” retort. He’s become a bit of a troll since I refused to bow to his opinion about Splatoon. I guess he finally realized he won’t win or change our opinion so he says stuff like that instead.

              1. Yea, this wasn’t the first time I’ve gotten such an unsubstantial reply from him, unfortunately.
And I don’t know if you can really call it “trolling” when every time he gives people these types of responsee, pretty much everyone just puts him into his place. So even if he’s attempting to troll, he’s failing miserably at it.

Yeah. A troll isn’t supposed to get pissed or angry. At least they aren’t supposed to show it in such an obvious way, anyway.

I love the 3DS but it could’ve been better. Like there should’ve been more colors to choose from. The storage shouldn’t be so small. Should’ve had an HD screen. Also needs to stop taking the Wii U’s games.

  4. The 3DS is a fantastic platform harboring excellent games. Hardware wise, it’s getting old very fast, and software wise, the last year was kind of lackluster.

(The reason for this may be the fact that Nintendo development teams are currently working on the NX software that will be presumably out in 2016. If –only if — the NX will be a hybrid platform.)

So it’s not time to stay — on the top of the priority list –; it’s time to move on.

  5. Well the DS was supported for a bit when the 3DS came out so the NX Handheld will not just cut the 3DS off but it will likely have a year left of bleh titles lol.

  6. I’ve personally paid for 3 of them. It’s a great handheld, if Nintendo plan’s to support the system it should expand on the V.C. titles. Love my 3DS, there’s rarely an occasion it doesn’t travel with me.

  8. The WiiU, however, not here to stay.
Also, give us a fucking firmware patch so we can safely use 128-256gig sd cards!!

    1. Maybe both… Who knows?

Nintendo has been merging its development teams (home console and handheld) since 2013, if I’m not wrong.

*yawn* The same lie they’ve told countless times about past consoles like the DS & Wii. If they intend to do the 3DS & Wii U like Sony & Microsoft are doing the PS3 & XB360, I’ll believe it when I see it.

    1. You touched a great point: both Sony and Microsoft are still offering a decent support for their old boxes. That’s nice of them.

I still remember the drought that preceded Skyward Sword, and the middle finger in our faces after it…

    2. I should have stressed in my previous comment that Skyward Sword came out in late 2011, and the Wii U was released in late 2012. Therefore, we are speaking of a at least two-year drought, without considering the droughts observed afterwards the Wii U release.

Yeah. The Wii was pretty much on life support after 2010. Lol.
