Nintendo Patent: Handheld/Controller With Free-Form Display

nintendo_free_form_patent1

With the NX on the horizon we have certainly been given access to some interesting patents from Nintendo. The latest patent is for what appears to be a controller mixed with a handheld using a state of the art free-form display. The elliptical touch-screen covers the device’s whole top surface area. This post on NeoGAF goes further into the specifics, but it certainly looks like a radical new idea from Nintendo. Whether it actually amounts to anything remains to be seen.

  1. We are aware that only a small fraction of this patents see the light of the market. But, if this happens:

    “Actual buttons, RIP. You guys will be missed.”

    In time: one of the million reasons I hate mobile gaming is the lack of actual buttons to play all that sh*t.

    1. Patents don’t have to be 100% faithful to the figures used to represent them and the figure does have shoulder buttons so if they were to implement it they could add buttons no problem even if they’re no in the patent.
      Anyway, I doubt it’ll be implemented on the NX, free-form displays are rather new and expensive and wouldn’t really add much to what already is there, if Nintendo was to implement them I think they’d wait until they’re cheaper.

      1. Right, they are more on the “hard concepts” field.

        And you’re right: while neat, those free-form displays are still quite expensive nowadays.

    2. It may not even be forced though. It may be an optional controller for the NX or it may be the mobile unit that’s suppose to be a part of the NX. If this patent is indeed legit, it seems like it will be a great idea to bring the casuals who love to game on their smartphones and tablets back to the Nintendo side but then again it could turn out to be a huge turn off for the ” core ” gamer if it’s forced. We’ll have to wait and see what happens but it does appear that this new patent is oddly interesting

      1. Yup, it is interesting. I agree with you.

        But the lack of buttons to play video games drives me insane. The same goes for stupid Kinect.

        I think I’m too old school…

        1. Well Kinect is a whole different thing. Same with HoloLens. But this is a patent not a product so it could take a very different shape. One thing is for sure Nintendo basically owns the patent on a free form gaming phone. They might have just patented their next cross pad. This is like the holy grail of patents, like amazons patent on taking photos of a product.

    3. I’m almost 100% certain that Nintendo is trying to patent even the most ridiculous of ideas now, so that in the distant future if they actually use it, they won’t get into legal issues… except when they do anyway.

        1. But it’s also just a patent and they’re rarely actually what the device will look like. It will probably end up having buttons, especially since Nintendo just was talking about how gaming is better on the 3ds than on mobile because buttons make the experience a lot better.

  2. oh please no. Entirely touch based controls are the worst thing. It only works for dumb little mobile games. Nothing good can ever come from making a full fledged release with touch only controls.

      1. So it does have “joysticks” of some sort, read this.” Holes are formed in left and right end portions of the display panel and the touch panel, and two operation sticks are provided through the two holes. When viewing the first portion from the front, an area except key tops of the operation sticks becomes a display area.”

        1. It also has 3D without glasses like the 3ds. Presumably the new 3ds version, or maybe even a better one than that. “It is possible to use a display panel allowing stereoscopic view with naked eyes.”

          1. Apparently it can also read games in cartridges inserted in the top! “Furthermore, a card slot 40 is provided in a center portion of the upper surface of the housing 12. The card slot 40 can be attached with various kinds of card storage media such as a game cartridge, an SD card, a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, etc. Therefore, the information processing apparatus 10 reads (acquires) a program and data from the card storage medium that is attached to the card slot 40, or writes a program and data into a card storage medium. It should be noted that the program is a program for an application such as a game, and the data is data used for processing of the application. Furthermore, in some cases, a personal authentication may be performed.”

            1. Hmm… So when they said the 3DS isn’t going away, they didn’t technically say if they’d release it’s predecessor… Maybe this is the portable?

                1. But this doesn’t look like a thing that would come on its own, but something packaged in with the NX. Maybe there will be a normal bundle, and then a hybrid bundle?

    1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

      It seems people praise Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, & Kid Icarus Uprising for being mostly touch screen controls. I wanted to play video games, not mobile games. :/

          With no option to play the game like a traditional video game, yes. I suppose I am. The gameplay sucks ass! I thought with the circle pad pro that you’d get the option to play the game using the second circle pad as the camera but instead all you got was a left hand control scheme. And the excuse that it’d be unfair to let people play the game online with traditional gameplay controls was also stupid. Let’s just go & force everyone to use gyro controls to play Mario Kart Wii & Mario Kart 8 because it’s unfair for people that choose to use gyro to race when they are going up against people using regular controls. Sakurai clearly doesn’t take skill into account when it comes to controls. Otherwise, he’d realize people good with gyro or motion controls won’t be at a disadvantage against someone who chooses to play the game traditionally. So like Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks, Kid Icarus Uprising was a “play to beat the story & never play again” type of game for me. But before you go getting upset because you like how Sakurai did the game, this is just my opinion & I’m sure there are countless others that will agree with me. Does this mean your opinion is wrong? No. As the saying goes, different strokes for different folks.

      1. I guess I’m pretty much done with them then. I’ll pick up the system after the next next gen comes out just for Zelda, (DK, Samus, Kirby) and maybe Smash but that’s about it. I’m growing tired of this catering to everyone but not satisfying anyone bs that they have been on lately.

  3. I just hope this is an optional controller and not the controller we’ll have to use for the NX. At least make it optional. Dx

          Don’t mind Bowler AA. He’s an idiot. Which should be obvious from the fact he uses all CAPS. Just wait, though. He’ll use the “my all caps button is broken” excuse.

        1. I picked this to further clarify the issue:

          “A display area 202 that displays an input character in the screen center is formed in the character input screen 200 shown in FIG. 15”

          Then, being picky, the “U” is actually a “display area”. But, heck, all the controller seems to be a display area! LOL!

  4. Would one reshape a Wheel? How about a Window? Maybe a Pencil?

    I love Nintendo, but they seem obsessed with always changing the way you use a controller. I’m sure they would allow for a more conventional method of control also, love that pro controller.

    1. THERE NOT CHANGING THERE EVOLIVING GAMING

      NINTENDO ARE TAKING THINGS FORWARD NOT STGNATIONG LIKE FAGGOT MS AND SONY

        1. Allow me to answer. Yes, he is firing random shots from the hip, making our ears bleed and should be muzzled until they learn to use their indoor voice.

          1. That guy has several nicknames, and posts at least in some Nintendo-centric websites. One of his aliases is “Get a Grip”.

            He apparently has several issues.

        2. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

          He’s an idiot. Just ignore him.

        1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

          Only he’s an idiot. If he makes a point, it’s just like Pachter: either by complete accident or he’s just stating the obvious.

          1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

            The fact he uses all caps in every single post for a good majority of the post should be a very big red flag that he’s an idiot.

    2. New consoles SHOULD have a new controller, don’t be afraid to master a new controller, I feel if you go the PS or Xbox route your not buying a full new product, only half a new one. Remember Atari? They thought controls should only ever be 1 stick and 1 button…look how they turned out…they’re gone. Point is controlls NEED to advance, evolve and change. You can’t let any part of gaming become a “standard” otherwise it suffocates the industry, makes others say well if they aren’t being creative then neither will I, then everyone becomes lazy idiots who pull all the BS that happens like disc locked content and micro-transactions and then a game industry crash happens again lol. In which case Nintendo will survive it, Sony wont, Microsoft’s Xbox Division wouldn’t unless Microsoft poured a crap ton more into it lol. Point is, CREATIVITY IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING. Even if the idea’s don’t always work out to be good, NEVER STOP DOING NEW STUFF.

      1. I’m not denying that creativity and new control methods are good, what I’m more saying is at some point Nintendo should work on the console and perfect a new machine rather then an amazing new controller. I personally feel there’s enough controller options already as it is.

        1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

          Seriously! I love Nintendo’s creativity but enough is enough! Focus on being the same as others for a few gens. When you’ve repaired the damage done by Wii & Wii U, then they can go back & try to innovate again. Just, for the love of God, catch up & join the rest of the world in the modern age before you fall even further behind, Nin… Ten… D’OH!

  5. I’m sure that this is just one option of contollers. It looks like to me to be a touch screen pro contoller. It allows for customized layouts and a screen, but I’d reckon that you will be able to use Pro contollers for those who want buttons, especially when Nintendo stated that the 3ds is here to stay because buttoned contollers allow for things that touch contollers don’t. Plus look at all the options for contollers on the Wii U. Wiimotes, Pro Contollers, Gamepad, Classic contollers, and even smash has the option for Gamecube. I think this is just proof Nintendo thinks about its fans and having options and games for all levels/types of gamers. They are allowing for evolution of gaming while staying true to their fans.

    1. THE PATENT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WITH..WITH OR WITHOUT BUTTONS THOSE OBSESSING OVER THIS ARE EITHER UNDER 12 YEARS OLD OR RETARDED

      it is a free form screen patent nothing more and yes nintendo is evolving gaming and maintaining there GENERATIONS AHEAD OF SONY MS CONTROLER SUPPORT

      STUPID IS NOT GAMEPAD STUPID IS NOT WI REMOTE STUPID IS NOT A HOST OF TWIN STICK PADS TRO CHOOSE FROM THAT WIIU HAS

      STUPID IS PUTTING A SILLY BULB ON A DUALSHOCK AND A POINTLESS STAMP SIZED LAPTOP TOUCH PAD

      THATS STUPID

      1. Haha. I wouldn’t word it quite that strongly. I like my Playstation, and don’t have a problem using it’s controller. Is there room for change, or improvement? Yes. But I still have fun with my system, which is what is important.

        My post was just to say that Nintendo does a great job of supplying options to the players. They won’t forget about those who like button controls. They are exploring new ideas and supplying options. Something that I think Nintendo is best at.

  6. Not the most devastating thing……unless they decide to go with a shape like the one used in the patent. Holy hell it would be worse than the Wii U if they did something like that lol

      1. I could deal with the touch controls, have been since I got an iphone 3 all those years ago, but a screen shaped like an oval would just be bad in general.

  7. This patent is actually very interesting…. Read this and just let it sink in…

    Furthermore, as the display panel 14, it is possible to use a display panel allowing stereoscopic view with naked eyes.

    As shown also in FIG. 11(B), the part of the hand of the player character 102 and the gun object 108 are displayed near the second operation stick 18b. For example, an operation that makes the gun object 108 move or shoot a bullet is performed by the second operation stick 18b. Therefore, since the gun object 108 is displayed near the thumb of the player, a feeling that the player is directly operating the gun object 108 is obtained.

    That is, since the game screen 100 drawn from the first-person viewpoint is displayed on the display panel 14 having a form similar to a form of the visual filed of the human being, the player can obtain a feeling of immersion into the virtual game space. Furthermore, since the gun object 108 is displayed near the thumb of the player, it is thought that a higher feeling of immersion can be obtained.

  8. “Furthermore, an object (flame object) 130 that imitates flames is displayed around the first operation stick 18a and the second operation stick 18b. For example, it is shown a situation that by operating at least one of the first operation stick 18a and the second operation stick 18b by the player, the player character is caused to emit the flame to attack the enemy character 106 with the spark and smoke generated by the flame. Thus, by displaying an image effect corresponding to a physical operation of the player around the operation stick (18a, 18b), it is possible to display the game screen 100 with ambience. Therefore, it is possible to more raise a feeling of immersion.”

    Now imagine this in stereoscopic 3D. Imagine looking down at your gamepad and your hands on fire! Then you can execute a fire attack on your enemy. This actually sounds pretty awesome!

  9. And more evidence pointing towards the NX HANDHELD I’ve been talking about for….well ever since Iwata first said “NX” lol. Can’t wait for the reveal so everyone can bitch and say BUT THE Wii U IS FAILING IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ASAP!!! When a new Handheld is in order more, and Nintendo always goes Handheld then Home Console, then Handheld then Home Console lol. NX Handheld, with Pokemon game at launch equals BOOM explosive profit. Hmm….just realized maybe that’s why we haven’t heard about a new Pokemon game yet? NX Launch title…(Not Pokemon Z lol, Next Gen Pokemon game I mean)

  10. Ew. Will Nintendo ever learn? People didn’t jump on board for the GBA as a controller for the Gamecube, and they didn’t support the Wii U even though it was a far better implementation of the idea, and now this? Let’s hope that Nintendo learns from their mistakes and truly does make it optional, if indeed it is the direction they’re going.

    Otherwise, expect another Wii U failure – the controller will be the most expensive piece to be made, and either developers aren’t going to want to, yet again, redesign a game for a different control scheme, or they’ll release shovelware shit that we see in mobile gaming which has oversaturated that market, and that will devalue the video game industry in general.
