Splatoon: Free Content Will Continue Till January But No Plans For Paid DLC

Game Informer has run an insightful interview with Splatoon co-director Yusuke Amano and producer Hisashi Nogami. The interview covers a variety of things including the fact that they have both reconfirmed that the additional free content for Splatoon will stop in January. However, they don’t have any plans for any additional paid DLC which will come as surprise to some. Here’s what they had to say!

How long do you plan to release additional content for the game? Will content eventually go from free to paid after a certain period of support?

Nogami: As we mentioned earlier, the free content for the game will continue to release until January 2016 and we don’t have plans to release paid DLC after that.

Amano: Considering the content that has been added after release, rather than thinking about it as free or paid add-on content, I really think of it as content that extends the ways in which you can play Splatoon. And this isn’t something that we just wanted to keep giving to people for them to consume, so that they keep churning through the content. Rather, we knew that as players would play what was available – for example, getting used to a certain weapon – at that moment, they would get new weapons and maps, and have to go back to that idea of “OK, how am I going to figure out how to use this weapon? How am I going to develop strategy for this map?”

Nogami: While games definitely are a collection of content, they’re also a playground of sorts. As we continue to release content and update Splatoon, we’re adding to and continuing to design that playground for people to enjoy. This is just sort of my personal take on the topic. And the Splatoon community has really developed further than we had originally envisioned, and we want to make sure we continue support for creating this playground for the players.

  1. They’re stopping cause next year at E3 they announce Spla2n on NX 2017~ :D

Lol jk. Honestly though I would buy a sequel to this game in a heartbeat.

    1. Nah, Team Garage will likely do another new IP next (or rather probably already has started on their next IP), Miyamoto put them together and trained them to make new creative projects and to help carry Nintendo, and think like he does. Splatoon 2 will happen some day, but I bet they do another new IP next.

      1. Actually, I think that is their plan from the sounds of it, thinking of new IP and a sequel…which I don’t mind seeing since I enjoy the original. I want to see what they got in store for us…and as for the “paid” DLC, are you people stupid? Why pay for it when its suppose to be on the game and free? I liked the option to get DLC for free because It told me,”more is to come, stay with us and enjoy”. Means I get to keep my money for more games.

      2. Lol it was a joke because I keep hearing people say NX will launch with Splatoon 2, although that seems a bit soon for a sequel to me. Also I love getting new Nintendo IP but I feel like these guys might be busy making the next main Animal Crossing soon…

With how they initially released this game as a 20 dollar content game for 60 bucks, paid DLC is unacceptable. In fact, the free DLC shouldn’t stop in January. What’s with these promises of supporting a game for the long run only to stop the support after 6-9 months? Some long term support, guys.

Not yet. But I will in March or April. I’m in no rush as I got my PS4 & 3DS keeping me busy.

    1. Stfu, people like you are what’s wrong with the gaming world, they gave enough already but you’re still complaining.

No. People like YOU are what’s wrong. You little sheep always giving companies a pass for one stupid reason or another. Run along, little corporate lapdog.

    2. Oh really? I feel as though, in comparison to other games, Splatoon didn’t do bad for itself and I feel no ire towards them ending it in January. Sure I’m bummed but there is a lot of content included as of now. Definitely more than a certain game can say (Star Wars Battlefront with it’s $50 of paid dlc and feeling less like a complete game for it’s initial $60 price point says hello.) In the end, as the saying goes, you get what you paid for, and when it comes to games I do feel many developers try well to get away with ‘scamming’ on content. Especially when including dlc these days. Sometimes the budgeted indie games feel more complete then what the AAA developers dish out.
However, I have thoroughly enjoyed Splatoon so far. It’s refreshing in how they have added their new content to the game. I know there will be a lot of people who agree with you, but for this, I have to say Splatoon is a smash hit with the content they have already released, and just because they are stopping the regular interval releasing of free new content, doesn’t mean it’ll be permanent. At least I hope not, unless they wish to work on a sequel and then by all means move on. lol

I’m glad you think the truth about Splatoon’s first month out is funny.

    3. i feel like Nintendo manipulates buyers by releasing the “free dlc” because everytime they announce new dlc they get free press. it’s the same with the other AAA devs so why should it be any different with Nintendo. that said, i’m not liking the model and I stopped playing Splatoon when they capped us a level 20 in the summer. I’m waiting until I have the full product to play it again. i have enough games to tide me over until january.

If you are going to give Nintendo a pass with that bullshit, you better be giving EA, Ubisoft, etc a pass for the crap they pull. If not, just another Nintendo fanboy.

  3. I hope Nintendo rolls out a few patches before it finally ends, because right now there are certain weapons (looks at Luna Neo and Dynamo) which don’t make sense

    1. How do they not make sense? Dynamo Rollers I hate because they might be genuinely OP, but Luna Blaster Neo? That weapon set feels like if the Demoman from TF2 were in Splatoon, it’s oriented around explosive damage and whatnot.

      1. Dynamo doesn’t make sense because people exploited Splatoon physics with it (pressing zr then jumping to get max range), which I’m almost certain the devs didn’t intend to happen. So weapons like the .96 gal is outranged by it, making it a little harder to deal with. Luna Neo, on a mode like Tower Control for example, is almost impossible to avoid getting killed by, because the time between the first shot and the next is so short that you have no way of really escaping from it, even if you know it’s coming, especially if Luna users stack damage up. Plus Luna Neo in general is kinda silly. The weapon’s one weakness was its range, but now Lunas can just throw a splat bomb at anything trying to attack it with range. But that can’t possibly be fixed by Nintendo though, so oh well

        1. Okay, Dynamo Rollers I entirely agree with (and it always seems to me like they have an extra layer of defense , can take fire from THREE opponents, kill all three in one fling, and walk away like nothing happened).

Luna Blasters do take skill though- you take on an opponent with a weapon with higher firing rate and better aim than you, you’re gonna get splatted before you can fire off another round. Not to mention, if you’re trying to make a direct hit, your aim needs to be precise since there’s no spread.

      2. To add on Luna Neo is similar to the e-litre 3k, in the sense that both have perfect kits. Lunas are kinda like lower skill Tentateks in a way, i.e people thinking they’re actually good when they get to S rank with Luna :P
