Yacht Club Games, the acclaimed team of developers behind retro inspired 2D platformer Shovel Knight, have said on a recent podcast that they would be silly not to make a sequel to the beloved game. The team says that the sequel could feature NES inspired visuals, like the original, or alternatively Super Nintendo or Nintendo 64 style visuals.

I always strongly assumed that Shovel Knight is a 16-bits visuals mimicker. I’m pretty sure we didn’t have such detailed and colorful graphics during the NES era.
It uses the NES Color Palette, but not the NES color restrictions.

Notably, one of these was a light brown used to ameliorate said palette’s lack of options for portraying characters of color. In playing the game, however, I was absolutely confident that many more colors had been added to the palette. As the article explains, this is mostly because more colors were allowed to appear onscreen at the same time: characters are allowed one or two more colors than sprites on the NES could accommodate, and different objects use completely different palettes while appearing simultaneously.”

Like the author, I had the perception of many more colors popping up from the screen. Therefore, I’m still not convinced that Shovel Knight suits better for a 8-bits art style game…
I hearken it back to the Sega Master system or the Game Gear which both were 8-bit, but could display more colors on screen than the NES could.
True. Master System was able to output better graphics than NES’ ones.
The Master System was my VERY first console. I grew up playing games at other people’s houses.. i played pong and even atari when they were what was IN… but eventually i did not fall in love with games until the NES.. but i LOVED my Master System! It has to this day, some of my most favorite games of all time.
So i would know lol.
I mean i even compared some screen shots i took the other day of both a NES and a Master System game to compare palates. I compared Wonder Boy to Super Mario brothers.. and not only did Alex Kidd have an over all larger amount of colors on screen, it has a bigger palate for the spites like Alex Kidd himself.
That’s why i can’t help but feel shovel knight looks like it could be on the master system… the difference is the audio.. the music clearly sounds like it was created from a NES sound chip, but the graphics for sure are more like Master System game graphics.
Crap i got 2 games mixed up… wonderboy and Alex Kidd… i’m so tired…
Or memory-based sprite restrictions. Or audio restrictions. Or…
I said it before and I’ll say it again: it’s a Genesis game.
As a random fact that I know, the entire actual soundtrack is able to be played on a Japanese Famicom because it’s made with Famitracker.
I thought the soundtrack used more audio tracks than what the NES was able to play. Or does the Famicom have different sound specs?
Developers could add quite a bit of sound to games by adding sound expansion chips to their games on Famicom consoles. Developers like Namco and Konami used them a lot. Listen to Castlevania 3’s Beginning theme on NES then listen to it on “VRC6”. Famicom consoles are able to detect sound expansion chips in games, but this (admittedly awesome) feature wasn’t brought over with the NES for one reason or another.
So, yes, Shovel Knight’s soundtrack couldn’t be played on the NES, but it could easily be played on any Famicom. (Although it would be far from efficient in terms of amount of space used for just music tracks.)
Weird, I didn’t know this. I had noticed some differences between Famicom and NES versions of soundtracks before, but I attributed them to revisions made before releasing the games overseas. Cool trivia fact.

I’d say take your leap of faith and make it in n64 style. If it’s a flop, just go back to what you were good at before. Everybody loved shovel knight, so even if you fail you have a safety net to fall back into.
I’d say go for the 16-bit leap first. One baby step at a time.
