Over the weekend, the guys at GameXplain got their hands on the PAX East demo for the upcoming multiplayer-centric 3DS title, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and you better bet they had a camera. If you’re one of the rare fans that haven’t boycotted the surprise game, you can enjoy the 20+ minutes of off-screen footage below. Even if you are still sour that the game isn’t what you asked for, give the video a shot anyway–you might see something you like. Metroid Prime: Federation Force launches in North America on August 19th, and in Europe on September 2nd.

You must have a couple of lose circuits, fix that.

Ohhh, how cute.
Wow this game is a piece of shit. I had to mute the video because I got so tired of hearing that over here command. How do you not give a fucking microphone option to people with these games? I don’t care what you think is best for the customer, but not every one wants to live in nazi Germany and listen to your idea that no microphone is best to play these games. This game sucks though no matter how you put it.
The game looks alright i will try it in a demo to judge for myself
This is at least the third time we’ve seen this exact same level.
This is how you know even Nintendo’s not confident in the game, which they shouldn’t be. Why bother showing anything else, only 4 people are gonna play the game anyway.
I’m going to continue to complain about this game. But I know that when it finally releases, I’ll end up getting it.
you complain less about it than most people lol
I’m going to get it too because it looks ok, maybe i’ll end up playing it more than I did with Triforce Heroes lol
*throws up in mouth again*
-||Civilian filth in Youtube are still trying to convince others that it’s not bad||-
Ew!
With all due respect commander, it might not be. The empire is fishing for people who may not know they will like the series. Perhaps the realistic art style may be a bit too intimidating for some or push others away as yet another FPS game at first glance. Maybe the multiplayer aspect is a means of slowly familiarizing new players to the universe in a manner in which today’s audiences may be more accustomed to game.
Granted, I am not saying you, Sir, will like it, nor even suggesting it is really made for you and old time fans. But just that if it isn’t to your liking, that does not make it bad right off. Besides, there’s still more games to play right?
The problem with that is that Metroid has never looked like this, nor has its focus ever been cooperative first-person shooting. Competitive FPS, sure, for Hunters, but at that point in time, Metroid wasn’t suffering from a drought nor was its previous game, Prime 2 Echoes, negatively received.
For most people who Federation Farce is their first Metroid game, they’ll play it and THINK they now know Metroid, then get confused when every previous Metroid game is totally different in terms of everything and then write them off because “it’s not what I’m used to.” That’s going to hurt the brand more than help it, and Metroid is already struggling.
Art style is one of the weakest arguments for anything, especially with this series as it’s style has changed a bit throughout the years and was only realistic during Prime. Even still, the aliens look about the same. What the series can do is also irrelevant as this isn’t turning Samus’s journey into wherever into a Scoobydoo-like venture with her hanging with new friends, it’s a side thing. And I would think the sales is kinda what they want to help promote.. That and perhaps the guy who spear headed Prime has a story or something he wants to tell *shrug*. Nothing about any of that equals a bad game or even the potential to be so. It only guarantees something different. And the previous game for the series would be Other M or Corruption depending on how you want to look at it.
I don’t get why you are so worried people will be thrown off by playing the older games or that they’d hate it. They might play them and find they like both styles, find they like the older ones better than Prime series, or that they really only like Prime, but are okay with the others. It’s just getting new blood and potentially new fans. By now everyone knows this isn’t how the series normally is. Nintendo’s pretty much called it a spin off, and all the upset fans have lamb basted the darn thing enough for everyone to know by now. If it’s good I see no harm in that in the slightest.
As good as it may turn out (which I personally think is dubious because of hooooooowwwwwww sssslllllloooooooowwwwwwww the gameplay is, even for Prime), I and many others will never see it as a Metroid game, and neither do some previewers, actually.
I might be able to use Fire Emblem as my comparison example. What was the biggest draw for Awakening and perhaps Fates? The ability to couple up your units to recruit their children, and much of the replayability comes from pairing units differently in every new save file. Most earlier Fire Emblem games don’t have this feature, so if someone whose first FE game was Awakening (like myself) plays the earlier versions and finds that coupling is not in these games, they may be disappointed because it was a feature they expected because said feature was in the first game they played, and it was a big part of the package on top of that. Who is to say that might not happen with Federation Force, who may expect Metroid to be about multiplayer shooting when all the rest are about solitary exploration?
Is it a definite inevitability? No. Is it a possibility? Yes.
Well not to be rude or anything, but whether or not you feel it is of the series is irrelevant. It is and being bitter about that is not really doing you or the game any favors.
And your analogy is quite improper as Awakening and Fates are main line Fire Emblem games. Federation Forces is more like SMW2: Yoshi’s Island as it’s in the Prime story line, but not really focused on the main story of whatever that was. These soilder’s, like Yoshi with does compared to mario, handle differently than our armored bounty hunter. It’s supposed slothfulness may have a designed purpose that is more difficult to appreciate because you’re still trying to see Samus Metroid when they’ve made it clear quite often that that is not how to view this game.
If certain Star Wars fans can pretend the prequel trilogy doesn’t exist, then we Metroid fans can pretend Other M & Federation Farce don’t exist. Nintendo saying it is part of the Metroid canon is just as irrelevant to us as our opinions seem to be to them.
It makes neither of you any less deluded. It happened. You can not like it all you want, but to act as if it doesn’t exist, simply because you do not like it, it the zenith of childishness.
Well in my mind, it doesn’t exist. Like Dragon Ball GT, it’s nothing more than fanfic in my eyes. If that makes me childish, so be it. I can live with that.
GT isn’t canon, but does exist. And that self centered mentality is not really making much of a point other than if you can’t have things your way you’d rather they not exist at all. Kinda a sad way to live one’s life really.
-||Changing the formula has nothing to do with destroying its essence, if they had the Metroid artstyle and the dark barren atmosphere while being difficult and not having idiotic space soccer, then this could have been something||-
…I don’t see the bright and shiny atmosphere and densely populated worlds you are inferring Federation Force to have Sir. And Blast Ball is a side game. As someone who loves the mini-games in Kirby 64, I shall defend to the death the inclusion of any extra fun games to play on the side with your friends, because those brought about some of my favorite gaming memories and I feel it fair for new and old gamers to have more of that in their games.
And this being a spin off of sorts is not really changing the core of the series. Like SMW2: Yoshi’s Island is certainly not a “Mario game”, but is pretty much canon, and it’s a shit ton of fun. That change in art style did nothing to hurt it, just as this third change in Metroid’s art style is not hurting the series. It’s just art. What’s crap to you could be gorgeous to another and there is no one true way to display anything really if one wish to make the artistic argument.
The Empire did not bait and switch us, they did not show us what you wished this game to be, then revealed what we have here, they have been very upfront about it Sir, and I feel it only right to judge the game after it is release on it’s own merits, not on what you would have wished it to be.
-||Like I’ve said a few times before, a chibi Alien movie would never ever be taken seriously nor have any impact whatsoever for what it is today||-
-||The same goes for Metroid which in turn is inspired by the Alien movies and even named Ridley after the worthy human Ridley Scott||-
But Sir, this is not the original Metroid. Yes the first game was based on that movie, but I believe that time has passed and it is it’s own thing, capable of growing and branching off like Mario and Link have. An art style is just, a style. The story is what would draw people in, even with a chibi Alien movie. Hell Kirby is the cutest game character ever and the most nightmarish (no pun intended) things occur in Dreamland 2 – 64.
People said Legend of Zelda should look more realistic when Wind Waker came out and now many say that’s the best one. Sure not all will like it, but we all don’t need to like ever iteration of all games in a franchise we like. Unless I was wrong and people really liked Other M?
-||No, are you seriously telling me that a chibi styled Alien movie would ever be considered the best sci-fi horror movie ever made?||-
-||Metroid is not in the same league as Mario or Zelda, those 2 weapons have always been more civilian friendly, Metroid has never been||-
-||Wind Waker had a different style, it still felt like Zelda and played like Zelda and had the atmosphere everyone likes about Zelda||-
-||Metroid Other M might be the second worst Metroid game available but it still felt like Metroid overall even though Samus portrayal was the worst part of this weapon||-
-||Federation Force is not even a Metroid game, spin-off or not, it should still feel like a Metroid world, it doesn’t at all||-
Well Sir, I think you may misunderstand what I meant with the Alien’s thing. What I meant was that all art is subjective. You feel it is the best sci-fi horror movie ever made, many others do, and others do not. If the movie were animated, done in chibi, but had genuine atmosphere, excellent writing, pacing and such, yeah I think it’d still be amazing. It’s much easier to draw a person into a realistic world because it’s what the human mind is familiar with, sure, but it’s only easier to do so. A great artist could use any style and suck you into the story they’re trying to tell. The original webcomic of Onepunch Man is my example for that as, while teh redraw and anime look AMAZING! the original id not any less impressive with how One conveys his story and how, after a while, the work has it’s own beauty. All horror is, is just playing with the audience’s senses and expectations. Once you get them immersed, you’re golden. Some ways take more suspension of disbelief than others, but yeah, a great writer, director, and team could have pulled that off so well, every other horror movie would have been emulating chibi to try and get into people’s heads. Such is the magic of art.
And yes, Metroid is not in the same league, because the series is, frankly, not as popular as those that I mentioned. Yes it has it’s audience, but that audience isn’t… big like LoZ and Mario audiences. They’re also.. well quicker to turn bitter over one bad game like Other M. If the games are not civilian friendly then it’s not making the empire money, which means they have every right to pitch it, since they wish to make money from it. Them trying to give civilians something to turn them into elites is necessary as we all needed training somewhere/.
I will simply say I disagree that Wind Waker feels or plays like a LoZ game as I quite disliked it over all. But such is personal tastes, and kinda why I’m talking about. I played the demo, didn’t like it, rented it, didn’t like it, and just last year played it through to completion because I felt maybe in my youth I was just still too much on a Majora’s Mask fix cause that is my favorite LoZ game. But I can say, I still don’t like it. But I don’t think it shouldn’t exist. Not all the games in teh series are for me, nor should they be. Everyone needs their favorite and least favorite and while this one may be a least favorite of yours it deserves to exist if the Empire wished to create it.
SMW 2: Yoshi’s Island is a spin-off, and plays nothing like SMB series. Kirby’s Dreamcourse plays not much like Kirby’s Dreamland. Final Fnatasy Tactics isn’t really like Final Fantasy either all things considered. Spin-offs are to do something different with the franchise from which they are derived. I cannot say whether Federation Force does or does not feel like a mainline Metroid game as I’ve not played it yet, but I will say it doesn’t “need” to. You and others simply wish it to. Which is fine to want, but ultimately unfair when the empire has already informed us that some things will be different and some things will be the same.
You just described selling out to a T. “Oh my small minority of fans make me some money & keep me relevant but I want more money! Let me completely change my image, so I can get more money. In other words, fuck my hardcore fans that are happy with my current image! They don’t matter to me! Only the money does!” :/
Incorrect. I discribed how business works. It’s not all about giving customer gratification and you can’t please everyone. Either you let the series die because it’s not financially feasable to continue extending resources down that path or you adapt and grow. You are confusing reasonable business decisions with money grabbing and that is your error in understanding. Perhaps try adapting a less myopic and insular view of things and try to accept that not every game in a series you love will be for you. After all, no one said this is how the series will continue hence forwards. To assume as much is childish paranoia.
But that’s the thing. Before Other M came along, Metroid was making more than enough money. There was no need to change the artstyle or gameplay at all. One bad game doesn’t mean the entire franchise was bad & needed to be changed to sell more copies for a future installment. You talk as if Metroid has been making Nintendo lose money for years when it was just one game that sold poorly.
Oh? Was it? How much did they cost versus how much they made? Because so far only 3 made over 1 mil and only one of the Prime series did so. Even the trilogy re-bundled it didn’t perform half as well. The fan base is small and Nintendo wishes to grow it. Nothing more sinister than that. They still put money into the franchise, still give it games. They’ve attempted to branch it out and nothing’s stuck yet, but they keep trying rather than shelfing it. You should be happy they like the series as much as they do.
There was no need to change things up with Majora’s Mask, no need to change Super Mario World with Yoshi’s Island, no need to change Kirby with his man spin off games, or Donkey Kong with Country, the Game Boy remake, or the lemings-like game, but they did cause they wanted to. Honestly your complaints and points are becoming quite hypocritical considering your stance on other things.
-||And changing the very core of a franchise does in no way show why it is beloved in the first place||-
……….I need to lie down….
