We have heard in the past that Toys R Us have been in trouble financially. Today, Bloomberg is reporting that the company is planning a bankruptcy filing possibly today. There isn’t any more details about the subject from the respected news publication so you will just have to stay tuned on the matter.

It should be noted that a bankruptcy does not necessarily mean the company is going out of business.
That said, it will have a very tangible effect on how the stores operate this holiday season. Locations being closed wouldn’t surprise me.
Will this mean heavy discounts?
They refused to grow with the times, children aren’t playing with toys as much today, if at all, and are more exposed to more advanced technology and better access to the world than toys ever could.
The toy industry is pretty much on it’s last leg at this point, unless more people buy toys for their pets, like I did when I bought a life size doberman pinscher doll for my dog, which btw she carries it with her everywhere as if it’s a real companion.
I wouldn’t say the toy industry is on it’s last leg but it’s definitely not the powerhouse it use to be.
I mean, some children do still like to play with toys & some parents prefer to buy their children toys as they are cheaper than say a smartphone. Not to mention cheaper to replace, too. Not to mention not everyone is big on technology whether they just don’t care about it or think it’s evil.
We’re just older now and since toys arent around us anymore we look at things differently, so we say yhings like ‘children arent playing witj toys as much today.’ Toys are still very much relevant, Toys R Us is dying off just like every other brick and mortar store that refuses to adapt to the modern date internet. Not to mention that places like Amazon has toys for cheaper than Toys R Us. Every time ive taken my niece, I see older toys STILL priced at original msrp, unlike amazon that continuously discounts stuff.
Toys are definitely still a large industry. Otherwise there wouldn’t be the plethora of ads and parents going crazy every holiday looking for that top toy.
Sure there’s tech, but the 5 year old at home just like many young kids still love their toys. It’s a tangible object vs digital that you can’t hold.

This is news to me as I didn’t know Toys’R’Us was in trouble.
They closed a bunch of Baby’s R Us a few years ago, and I think reduced Toys R Us locations as well. It wasn’t enough apparently.
I totally forgot about that chain from Toys “R” Us! xD Anyway, it’s probably a little section inside each Toys “R” Us these days.
Yeah they consolidated. When I went to my local one last week it was in the far corner.
This could definitely mean they’re bought by someone else soon though. Even if they aren’t doing great financially, it’s a big enough name that if it’s available for cheap, someone’ll grab em up.
Unless they aren’t interested in selling & prefer to see the name go down in a blaze of fire & death. Of course, eventually someone else will be able to name their store Toys R Us as a name can fall into the public domain if not used after a certain period of time. Either way, Toys R Us will be a name that is eventually used at some point as the name is pretty catchy.

It’s one of the places you can buy Nintendo products. I’m sure there are some people that probably buy Nintendo stuff exclusively from Toys “R” Us, so this news might interest them. So that’s why it’s Nintendo related news. If I had a blog about news pertaining to chicken as a food, I’d make an article about Burger King going out of business. Why? Because they serve chicken as a food choice. It’s not their main product but it is a product they serve.
Same rule applies here. Toys “R” Us’s main product might not be Nintendo products but they do still sell them so that right there is all the reason MNN needs to post an article about it.
Yes, because Nintendo is trying to shipped as many Nintendo Switch consoles as possible in everywhere in stores. including Toy R Us.
Some TRU had some exclusive Nintendo-related stuff, like Pokemon giveaways and other bundles. So this has a small impact on Nintendo.
Well, the most important thing: They are going to sell the SNES mini on Launch day (in store only)

The fact that they carry Nintendo products is not enough to justify this as Nintendo news. Kohl’s carries Nintendo products too. Nobody would consider Kohls’ financial troubles to be Nintendo news. Tous R Us going bankrupt will not affect Nintendo’s business in the slightest. I also highly doubt anyone interested enough in Nintendo to look up news on it is buying all their Nintendo products at Toys R Us.
This story is very thinly connected to Nintendo.
Well steve added another good reason this is Nintendo related. And that’s all the reason sickr & the others need to post this article. If Kohl’s was more important to Nintendo, and was a much bigger name to a very much wider audience, I’m sure sickr & them would post articles about any problems that place might have, too. And it might not effect Nintendo but it will effect any gamers that do buy from them even if they are small. Don’t forget we denizens of the comment section aren’t the only ones using this place for news. There is no telling how many that don’t comment DO use Toys “R” Us on a regular basis for their Nintendo purchases.
Toys R Us had Special Edition Samus Returns and the Amiibo bundle right before launch.
They’ve also been an exclusive partner for Amiibo launches. It’s one of the big 5 in the US for Nintendo partnerships.

First movie/game rental stores (replaced with Netflix/illegal movie downloads and the shitty Gamefly.com), then the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, now Toys R Us!?
If all these things are being taken away. just one question?
What are their replacements!? You can’t just shut down the last remaining and most definitive things (lack of a better word) left in this world, with nothing to replace them.
I personally don’t play with toys, but it hurt to lose a part of your past that you can’t return to, not even to relive memories or just to kill time.
What’s next, the movie theaters, the zoos, the aquariums, pools, mini-golf, fast food restaurants, pizzerias, book stores, family entertainment centers, farms, museums, arcades, Video. Game. Stores? It’s like something out of a Dilbert comic strip.
Unless we become androids that don’t need food in the near future, you don’t have to worry about places that sell food going out of business with no replacements. In other words, maybe you should chill a little. lol As for the rest, they are safe from this apocalyptic future for quite some time, too. Many, many, many people still like to go to & use those places & things as people do still like the physical things they have to travel to get to.
Well theaters are headed that way. Day on day streamimg will definitely take care of that. As for Toys R Us, well, we still have other stores, and most notably, Amazon.
Doubtful. With the box office still seeing millions & millions AND MILLIONS *cough*WWE’sTheRockreference*cough* of ticket sales, I’m sure movie theaters are still looking at a very healthy, and very long, life. Not to mention movie theaters have much bigger screens & much louder surround sound systems for people to enjoy movies on.
True, but theres a lot of upsides to not going to theaters. More people can watch for a cheaper price at home, no annoying assholes that cant seem to understand that other people also paid for tickets, watch at your leisure, worldwide releases, ect, ect.
Yes the box office is still seeing millions, but as of now, theres no digital day and day. The moment Day and Day happens, thats when we’ll really see how much Box Offices will be able to stand on their own.
The future is digital. Its only a matter of time before we all adopt it.
When VR is cheap & in every home & doesn’t cause people motion sickness, then movie theaters might actually be in trouble since, as I said, movie theaters have much bigger screens people can watch movies on. The only thing that could beat that is a comfortable, affordable VR headset where your entire point of view IS the movie.

Does this mean they’re going out of business? I hope not. I’ve been wanting them to build a Toys R Us store in my location for YEARS. I may be 39, but Toys R Us has always been one of my favorite stores. Though I haven’t been there in ages. The closest location to me is over 200 miles. And I never travel more than 30 miles.
I still remember vintage Toys R Us. Back when they didn’t have video games on the shelves. Instead, they had these papers (for every game) that you had to carry to the little window in front, and then the employee walked into the back to get the game after you hand them the paper. For some reason, that was so magical to me as a kid.
They were actually closing locations a while back I believe.
Aw man I completely forgot about the papers. Thanks for that nostalgia. That’s how I got my purple Gameboy Color (other colors were sold out).
This is deeply saddening for me.
So many wonderful memories of wandering down the doll isles, looking at the huge doll house on display, the neat displays… and when I got older I bought one of my first video games there. :(

That’s sad. I loved going there as a kid. And just a few weeks ago I loved taking the 5 year old at home to go buy toys. You can’t beat the experience for little kids.
I hope they survive, and slimming down a few years back wasn’t enough for them.
Honestly don’t know how they’ve lasted so long, it seems like they only make a lot of money like once a year.
