A massive update for the Nintendo Switch‘s firmware has been released, and it brings the console to version 4.0.0. Many features, including the ability to capture video on select games and to transfer user and save data to other systems, have been added. Nintendo has also released the update’s patch notes, so we have included them for you down below.
- Capture video on select games
- To capture video, hold down the Capture Button during gameplay
- Up to maximum of the previous 30 seconds will be saved in the Album. You can trim the beginning and end of each clip, and post to Facebook and Twitter.
- As of October 18th, 2017, this feature is compatible with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, and Splatoon 2
- Select from 12 new Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild icons for your user
- To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top left of the Home Menu > Profile
- Transfer user and save data to another system
- To transfer, head to System Settings > Users > Transfer Your User and Save Data
- Pre-purchase option on Nintendo eShop
- A pre-purchase option will be available for certain games. This option allows pre-load of the game to your system for quicker play when the game is released.
- This feature will be supported by future game releases
- News channel updates
- The news feed has been updated with a new look.
- Unfollowing a channel will remove that channel’s content from the news feed and following the channel again will make it reappear.
- Match software version with a group of local users
- To create a group, head to the software’s Options > Software Update > Match Version with Local Users
- Everyone’s software will be updated to match the most recent version in the group
- All users must be on system menu version 4.0.0 or later to view and join a group
General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience, including:
- Changed the specification which hid wireless networks using TKIP security from the network search results. Wireless networks using TKIP security will now display in search results as a grayed-out selection instead of not being displayed
- The Nintendo Switch console supports WEP, WPA-PSK(AES), and WPA2-PSK(AES). If your router is using a different security type (e.g. WPA-PSK(TKIP)), you will need to change this security type within your router’s settings.
Nice! They have a ways to go with the OS, but this is a start.
Still waiting for home menu changes for folder and multiple app placements. As well as Turning on/off system with the remote besides using the physical button, stock voice chat, themes as well as using images for wallpapers, media play for videos/music. There’s just so much standard features thats missing.
@thestrangablog
Just a heads up you have already been able to ‘turn on, off’ the switch remotely. When its in sleep mode, just hold down the home button on either joy con/pro controller and the system will switch on along with your TV. And vice versa to go to sleep again (but by selecting it).
I mean “turning it off/on”. There is no visible option.
The recording feature is gonna seem kinda useless after a while. It’s more of a highlight feature.
Highlight feature
Overwatch confirmed for the Nintendo Switch
The capture video component is neat, but it’s pointless for Elgato users.
Not necessarily, idk about you, but I’m not always hooked up to my elgato, so if I’m playing in handheld mode for example, i could still use it if i want.
Not everyone has an Elgato.
Not everyone uses Facebook or Twitter either.
FB and Twitter are easy to access compared to buying an Elgato. Just because the elgato is a thing, does not make this update pointless. Everyone doesn’t own everything.
Exactly
I do not have a cat.
99% of switch owners will not have an Elgato product
And 1% of Switch owners will not have a Facebook or Twitter account.
I use an Avermedia LGP. Much more convenient than the Elgato although I do still own one
1% he says. So this update is indeed useful.
I want to reply to your later comments but I can’t I guess?
It saves the captures to the Micro SD card same as screenshots, so those who don’t use Twitter/Facebook can upload the videos elsewhere through a PC. I imagine they’ll add other upload options later.
For this comment I have to say that playing docked this doesn’t beat an Elgato so long as you already have the software running with replay capture on. If something cool happens while playing in handheld mode though this is fantastic, and as someone with an Elgato myself this is a more than welcome addition.
What is Elagto? Never heard of it.
Elgato is a brand that develops capture cards that many YouTubers use to record videos with. If the console has an HDMI cable, an Elgato HD60 can record videos from it.
Is it expensive?
This one https://www.elgato.com/en/gaming
What the heck is an Elgato anyway? How many people use Facebook and Twitter and how many use Elgato? Get real and stope the whine for no logical reasons.
Ok nice update. But what about moving games TO and FROM sd card?
I actually tried it myself before now and it works but that depends on software and also take care of how you move stuff. Cut/Paste on PC usually works.

Well it’s a good sign of better improvements to come since this was not announced or anything
30s? That’s just pointless for game capture users. They should record up to 15 mins or 10
I would take 5 minutes over lame ass 30 seconds. Nobody is gonna care for 30 second gameplay which is why MK8 replay posts went dead as soon as it’s post and also explains why they removed the feature.
Maybe no one wants to watch more than 30 seconds of someone else playing a game? You get a taste of it or see something cool… that’s about it.
Still doesn’t stop PS4/XB1 or Youtube for that matter doing the same shit everyone is comfortable with. It’s either you watch or don’t. But there’s also a factor of looking into what you want to make sure if your decision of buying it is right.
Also, why not make the feature universal for all games in the system? Apple updated their iOS devices recently to record ANYTHING from the device. What’s Nintendo’s excuse? Oh yeah, IP control on YouTube which is what they’re also avoiding. WTF even watches videos on FaceBook/Twitter? Barely dozens compare to THOUSANDS or MILLIONS on YouTube.
Nintendo moves slowly. They didn’t have recording capability at all before the update so I am sure there is a balancing act to make things entertaining, useful and not screw up while also not taking up too much of the systems power and GPU/CPU memory and such while games are going. It is an economic stance and it has worked, for the most part, thus far. It isn’t that they don’t hear you and others, they just don’t rush
You know, now that you mentioned it, they removed the feature because of Miiverse is about to be shutdown. They are still not in on bringing it to the switch.
Like I give a shit about Miiverse.
i wanted to capture my avatar from Xenoverse 2 doing the awesome-and-not-stupid-dab Great Saiyaman emote but its not supported, at least not yet.
Video capture? Nice but only 30 seconds? I would get if it’s on tablet mode but why not prolonged 5-10 minutes on dock and why not universal for all games? Also, THANK GOD THEY OFFER DATA TRANSFER!
Finally, the video capture is added- too bad it’s only up to 30 seconds… I get why it’s such a little amount of time (probably memory limits) but couldn’t we have gotten at least a minute?
I would get if it’s 5 minutes max on tablet and 10 minutes on dock. But 30 fucking seconds? Nobody is gonna care about that and would rather record with external camera.
Sweet. I just switched my profile picture to Cappy. Hopefully they add some Fire Emblem portraits when the next mainline game comes out. The recording feature is neat, although 30 seconds is a little short. Doesn’t matter to me much since I have an elgato, but it’s certainly nice if I’m playing in handheld mode.
Just two more things needed:
-Save data BACKUP.
-A fix for the “insert game card” confusion when trying to get gold points for the digital only Sonic Mania
Damn, detailed patch notes, Pre-Load (Probably for Odyssey), video capture, Wi-Fi and JoyCon signal improvements, still no Browser tho.
For next update:
Have Video Capture universal without specific software dictating for it’s use and extend recording to 5-10 minutes as well as offering YouTube support as long as Nintendo can fuck off with the IP Nazis mindset.
Theme support please? As well as using saved images as wallpapers and give the system/eShop musical tunes.
Media play/app for music/videos.
Multiple App display window like 3DS as well as having folder support
Web Browser and app support.
Bluetooth Headset with system having stock voice chat feature
If possible, emulate “Streetpass” via Bluetooth/Wifi because I seriously love that feature in 3DS which will give Switch more purpose for it’s portability aspect and add Mii Plaza with puzzles and mini games.
Power off option via JoyCon remotes
wants mii plaza…
casual confirmed…

As a social hub with mini games asswipe. It’s not like Sony did it before…PS Home…
Man im so happy for the save/user files transfer. :D I like how its more specific where u can transfer a specific user (and their save file) to another Switch. But I still hope for a cloud feature for saves and users, just in case the Switch breaks or something and u cant transfer it between systems bc of it.
I love how they give us more avatars without making us pay for them! Well at least not yet :)
Don’t jinx it. They would make us buy more useless Amiibos to unlock more that’s hidden in its paywall. Next thing you know, they’ll be paywalling voice chat…
