Nintendo’s Tatsumi Kimishima recently sat down with Yahoo Japan to talk about the success that Nintendo has seen with the Switch and to talk about the system’s “crucial” second year. The Nintendo Switch took the video gaming world by storm in 2017, but Nintendo isn’t prepared to sit back for its second year. They want the momentum to continue well into the future. Here’s what he had to say:
- “In order to be playable in the long-term, the second year is crucial.”
- “Our task is to add more users, including people who barely touch game consoles.”
- Nintendo has to expand the game library, take in new players, and raise the Switch as “a game console with long lifespan”
- Kimishima believes overall worldwide momentum for Switch is rivaling the Wii era
- Nintendo has reached most early adopters because they really like Nintendo’s games
- Nintendo’s games are focused on the family demographic
- In the Switch’s future, different sorts of genres will be covered by third-parties, which will help expand the system’s user base
- If Nintendo doesn’t think of new ways to play, Switch momentum could stop due to competition from other hardware creators
- There is a possibility in the future that the method to deliver surprises to customers may change
- To equalize earnings, it is important to always maintain unique ideas
I don’t really understand the word crucial here. I mean, the Switch isn’t even out for 1 year and already surpassed the Wii U sales and Nintendo is doing is job. So why putting this word?
Basically they’ve had an amazing start with 2 hugely successful 1st party titles winning awards and 3rd party’s are now going to start jumping in on the switch as well as indie developers praising it, but they’ve got to keep the momentum up in these main 3 areas.
That’s what’s crucial!
For continued success and not a sudden drop.
Thank you
Because a great start is nice, but sales can easily taper off. If the prez thinks that only about 10% of potential sales have been gotten, then there is a long way to go to achieve their goals. Games need to keep coming and the genres expanding. And new ways to play is also necessary as the other consoles do their best to offer what the Switch does (to some degree).
He has to keep his company motivated and pushing the boundary. Not how you start, its how you finish.
Understood
the greatest had a great first year… then the ps2 came out. The switch has a good start but Nintendo still needs to heavily market the switch for at least another 2 years so we can call it an actual success.
And they are. I see the sales are speaking it’s volume.
yeah i do too but just saying the first year doing good and calling it a day could possibly doom them. They have to keep it up is all I’m saying
I’m not saying to get cocky over it. Just saying that there are signs and hope for Nintendo bouncing back.
*dreamcast (stupid autocorrect)
Dreamcast? I lost something these days?
Where is the Commander Quadradxis? I thought he will comment on something so important as this news.
He is busy
I see. Tell it about this excellent news.
I don’t want new ways to play. I want the right games to play.
New ways to play is great, but like you say the right games are more important
And Nintendo is surely doing both this time.
You’re not the only gamer in the world…
And there’s plenty. Chill out. Also, the right stuff to play are possibility the NOT types of games you’re implying.

I believe that what most people want is the traditional way to play, but with the variety in games only a Nintendo console can provide: Nintendo games and 3rd party AAA hits in one place.
They’re right but I can already see a promising year for Switch in 2018. Payday 2, Dark Souls Remastered (eventual trilogy), Prime 4, Yoshi’s NOT Little Big Planet (lol), Pokemon Gen 8, hopefully Smash Bros reveals soon, rumored Batman Arkham collection as well as GTA5.
Prime 4 and Pokemon aren’t actually confirmed for this year, though they are possible. On top of what you said, Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, Bayonetta 1 and 2, Mega Man 11, No More Heroes, a ton of indie games, and several Wii U ports are confirmed.
Not Pokemon. Maybe Prime 4.
Yeah, with Ultra Sun and Moon just coming out, I’m pretty confident Pokemon won’t be this year. I’m thinking Prime is decently unlikely unless they fully unveil it soon. They could surprise us, but “Now in Development” doesn’t really scream next year.
I’m sure they started working on Prime 4 and SR at the same time as Chibi Force was revealed and met with overwhelming negative backlash while tightening AM2R awareness.
You should know by now with the introduction of the N64 colors and controllers, along with the various 3DS cases… that people love color and having some uniquism. Make moar colors
Strangeblogger can suck it

Nintendo please leave the games live in other consoles in peace. But i never buy a switch only i wait anime games go to other companies
Why is he always talking in conundrums? What does it mean: “There is a possibility in the future that the method to deliver surprises to customers may change”?
Nintendo’s next plans are in motion.
