The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Now The Best-Selling Zelda Game Ever

Nintendo’s software sales numbers which were revealed today show that the excellent The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now the best-selling Zelda game ever. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has dethroned The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which launched back in 2006 on the Nintendo Gamecube and Wii. Nintendo has shifted an impressive 10 million copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. 8.48 million copies were sold on the Nintendo Switch and 1.5 million on Wii U. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sold 8.85 million copies between both the Nintendo GameCube and the Wii. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the third best-seller on Nintendo Switch after Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

      1. Is kind of ironic how people love wind waker more than twilight princess, despite the former being so controversial when it was first shown, i love both games by the way.

    1. Well, BotW will continue to sell for years, so even a re-release of TP HD on Switch won’t help it. BotW has only been out just shy of one year, so it’s got several million more it will sell over time.

Zelda sells better than almost any other franchise in general anyway. The only franchises outside of Nintendo IPs that sell at or above Zelda levels consistently are COD and GTA. OoT, TP and BotW all sold more than every PS2 game ever made, except the top 5 selling PS2 games. That’s impressive, considering the PS2 had 150 million owners. Zelda should sell at Mario levels IMO, I don’t disagree with you, but it’s sales aren’t bad overall. Even the lowest selling Zelda game is higher than some franchises ever reach.

    1. If they ever make a 3rd game featuring the Hero of Time, I’d love for it to be the first Zelda game to have an older, more battle hardened/weary Link. Facial hair, scars, maybe one eye lost in a battle or badly damaged from a battle, etc.

      1. The best version of Link to show up as a “battle hardened” Link, would be “Hero of Legend” Link. He was in Link to the Past, then went on his adventures in the two Oracle games, and then on his way home to Hyrule, got lost in the storm at sea, and saved the Wind Fish. That Link is by far the most experienced Link, and he has yet to make it back to Hyrule from Link’s Awakening, so why not a story where he comes home, ages more, and a new threat comes? Seems perfect.

  1. Not that surprising when you think about it. Zelda’s been on a downward trend for most of Aonuma’s run. His too least “Aonuma like” games, selling the best is only natural. The man’s been doing everything he can to take Zelda away from its roots since he took over the franchise.

  2. Wow… I didn’t expect that. Sure, the game is fantastic and it was a launch title, but that’s still pretty big and it will continue to sell.
