NPD: The Nintendo Switch “was again the best-selling hardware platform of September”

The NPD Group’s monthly report isn’t just about software. We also get some information on how video gaming hardware and accessories are doing. As you’re probably expecting, the trends haven’t changed. The Xbox One and Playstation 4, both of which are seeing their successors releasing in Holiday 2020, are down in sales. Meanwhile, NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said that the Nintendo Switch was “again the best-selling hardware platform of September and remains the best-selling platform of 2019”. Piscatella also confirmed that the Switch “is the only platform with sales gains both in September as well as year-to-date”.

Although this has been the case for quite a while now, NPD’s September report includes a new arrival, which is the Switch Lite. There wasn’t much discussion of the Switch Lite, but it is stated that the Switch Lite “gave a boost to the platform’s sales”. According to Piscatella, amiibo also had a great September. Piscatella says that “Interactive-gaming-toy dollar sales jumped more than eight times when compared to September 2018. [That was] driven by growth of Smash Bros. Series 1 amiibo and Link’s Awakening Series 1 amiibo.”

  1. The thing is; Isn’t the Nintendo Switch in a very good position right now? The Playstation 5 was only just announced, Playstation 4 is pretty much done in terms of high sales due to being out for years, and the Nintendo 3DS…well that’s just done in general as at this point is only being used by people that already own 1.
Really, the Nintendo Switch is without competition right now.

    1. Yeah, they have a year to keep capitalizing and when the PS5 comes out, Switch will probably (if necessary) get a price drop or it might not have to because the PS5 will be, I would think, at least 400 for the base if not 500.

Regardless, Nintendo has found a special niche here and I expect a new Switch in 2022 or so, or Spring 2023.

If that one is like a PS4 and, since it is still a Switch, portable, they will extend the console genre for a while.

People keep looking to when console gaming will die, because of the cloud or what have you, but I don’t know. Depends on 5G honestly.
