Platinum Games partners with Tencent

Platinum Games has announced today that they’ve partnered with Tencent and have received vital capital investment from the Chinese company. This will allow the teams to follow their ambitions including possibly moving into self publishing. Platinum Games will continue to remain independent. Here’s the full statement from the company:

We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.

We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name.

Thank you as always for your continued support. Please look forward to what we have in store.

      1. That has almost always meant absolutely opposite.
But I will keep my hopes up that I will see Bayonetta 3, and it will be decent.

  1. So what does Tencent get out of it, if no say in anything? I generally never trust that Chinese companies don’t stick their fingers into decision-making.

Maybe we’ll see a “totally coincidental” decision in a bit to give Bayonetta a looser outfit, and a narrative explanation for why she won’t flash any skin while attacking anymore.

      1. Oh yeah, I’ll expect him to have died in events that happened between 2 and 3.

  2. Well that’s depressing. At least they’re being up-front about it and not trying to play it down.

  3. At the very least, Tencent will get a share in the profits from Platinum Games going forward. Tencent have so many shares in so many parts of the industry, it’ll become difficult to buy any game without paying them somewhere down the line.
